    Reflection on PACO 506

What? The first thing I noticed about the process of this class was it was going to be a lot on my plate with all the other things I have going on in my life. After I swallowed that, I buckled down to learn and take in all that I could in the timeframe we had. I was surprised to find that I did so well, and my grades reflected my effort with being out of school for over 20 years. The assignment that stood out to me the most was on a client that could have ADHD. In Johnson’s book, Psychology and Christianity, he says, respect the scientific merit of psychology, and concluded that, Christian faith and contemporary psychology should not be related. This was very interesting to study. I also enjoyed reading how others in the class viewed this situation. It’s good to know that not every counselor is for everyone and not every client is good for every counselor.

So, what? The patterns and conclusions that I saw in myself was to keep going, and that I can do this. Throughout my life I have set myself aside to attend to my children and or family or even my church. I learned thru this experience that it’s ok to take the time for myself and when doing so you grow and have more to give to others. Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Resting in Him in during this course has been the best medicine. The fact that we get to do this every day, even with our clients, is the best take-away for me!

Now what? Now, the journey for me is better set up with the knowledge that has been given to me. I feel better prepared for my next class now knowing how Liberty’s system works, learning how to submit assignments and even how to make pamphlets and slideshows, when I didn’t have that experience before. Time management is something that I need to work on in the future. I found when I didn’t allow the proper time to work on my weekly assignment, I would get really stressed. I think that I will be using information from the personal integration theory comparison assignment. This comparison is neatly laid out to quickly see different viewpoints.

Thank you for this journey and have a great rest of your year! -Sarah Daley

How is the Great Awakening contribute to revival in America?

    Completion requirements

    1. The Great Awakening

The early Eighteenth century was a time of religious and moral weakness in the colonies, and New England. The zeal of the first generation Puritans did not appear in their descendants. In Pennsylvania, Quakerism, the dominant form of religion, had lost much of its enthusiasm and evangelistic order perhaps because of great material prosperity. Great Awakening came in this time of need. The Great Awakening was a series of simultaneous, spontaneous, unorganized, and rural or village congregational awakenings led by godly pastors such as Jonathan Edwards. It often occurred spontaneously in different areas at the same time, resulting in the conversion of many, who became godly church goers and lived godly lives in their homes and work place.

Jonathan Edwards local church (Northampton) experienced revival. Charles G. Finnys meetings brought about revival. Revivals occurred in cities New Jersey (Presbyterian Church), Rochester, Yale, Cane Ridge etc. Evangelism is the result of revival as non-Christians became converted and accepted Christ. The tours of Jonathan Edwards and other leading ministers were followed by widespread evangelistic work in New England. The Spiritual awakenings motivated the need of reaching the unreached as well as of stirring the believers for a holy life.

The preaching of Theodore Freling Huysen bought about revival in Dutch Reformed congregations in New Jersey in 1726. The revival produced fiery evangelists among the Scottish-Irish of the middle colonies.

The revival in the Dutch Reformed and Presbyterians soon spread to Congregationalist New England through the efforts of Jonathan Edwards. His prayer and sermons brought about revival, which began in 1734, spread throughout New England until it reached its high tide in 1740. He upheld a Calvinistic theology and believed that while people have a rational ability to turn to God; because of total depravity they lack moral ability. This ability must be imparted by divine grace. George Whitefield was another great revival preacher from Boston. He preached in Boston and throughout New England brought about great revival.

Samuel Davis became the leader of the revival among the Presbyterians in Virginia. George Whitefield unified the efforts of all these revivalist preachers as he travelled in all the colonies in seven visits between 1738 and 1769. This revival was considered to be the American counterpart of Pietism in Europe and the Methodist revival in England. Between thirty to fifty thousand people and 150 new churches were added to the churches in New England. Thousands joined the churches in southern and middle colonies. The Congregational, Presbyterian, and Baptist bodies were much enlarged.

A high moral tone was noticed in the homes, work, and amusements of the people. Colleges were started to provide ministers to the new congregations. Missionary work was spurred and men like David Brainerd engaged in missionary work among the Red Indians with great personal sacrifice. Presbyterians founded college in New Jersey, now Princeton University, to train ministers in 1743. Whitefield founded an orphanage at Georgia for which he took up collections in his meetings. He also helped the Thirteen Colonies to sense their unity and common culture and values.

In this assignment, you will write a 2-3 page position paper in which you identify, analyze, and respond to complete arguments presented in the film Inherit the Wind (1999). You will choose one side of one or more of the major conflicting arguments depicted in the film and construct your own argument in response. Use your Argument Identification Worksheet as a resource.

    Your task is to:

    1. Identify complete arguments from the film (each must include a clear assertion being argued, reasoning, and evidence).
    2. Explain these arguments in your own words, demonstrating that you understand how they function in the film.
    3. Take a position on the issue(s) by constructing your own arguments using logical reasoning, examples from the film, research about the historical case State of Tennessee v. John T. Scopes, and academic sources.
    4. Support your claims with credible evidence and cite all sources using APA style.

  • W2 – Gods Relationship with Israel

Purpose: The students will demonstrate an understanding of the covenant relationship between God and Israel.

Instructions: Pemberton explains that the Lord is in a relationship with Israel. It is not obedience to the commandments that make Israel the people of God. Their obedience is an expression of gratitude for what God has already done. For this assignment, you are going to create one page infographic. You will work through the Ten Commandments identifying the principle behind the commandment. In the infographic, include the following for each commandment:

    • State the commandment.
    • Give an explanation of the principle behind the commandment. (Use Chapter five in Pembertons work to help with this task).

After completing the portion on the Ten Commandments, create two boxes that explain the two common misunderstandings of the law of talion (see Pemberton p. 97).

Make sure that your final submission is one page, free from typographical and grammatical errors and that it is aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand. It needs to stand alone without the need of outside explanation.

    • Infographic offers an explanation about the principle behind each commandment.
    • Infographic provides an explanation of the two common misunderstandings of the law of talion.
    • Infographic is on one page, is free from typographical and grammatical errors and is aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand.
  • W3 – The Conquest and the Story of Rahab

Purpose: The students will evaluate the challenges that come with the conquest narrative in comparison to the treatment of Rahab.

Initial Post: The book of Joshua and the conquest of the Promised Land within it present many challenges about Gods heart and character because God commands the Israelites to overthrow nations. We find two unique stories in this section of the Old Testament that offer insight into the nature of God, the story of Rahab (chap. 2-4) and Achan (chap. 7). These events present challenges as we consider a God that seeks obedience, yet also offers grace and mercy. In 300 words, address the following questions:

    • Achan was one of Gods people, an Israelite. Yet he is the one that struggles with obedience. What do we learn from Achan and his family about following Gods instructions? What was the temptation that Achan faced that caused him to be disobedient?
    • Rahab, a non-Israelite, is willing to risk her life for a God she does not fully know. She offers hospitality to the spies and is rewarded with hospitality from all of Israel in return. What does the story of Rahab demonstrate about Gods grace and mercy (remember her nationality, prior occupation, and religious background).
    • How do you justify the conquest narrative with your understanding of God? (Reference one of the readings from this week to support your answer).
