Theology Biblical Metanarrative
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the unified and coherent nature of the Bible by explaining the overarching narrative of Scripture. Understanding the big story of the Bible or what some call the biblical metanarrative is foundational to ones understanding of theology. One way to view Scripture is through the four major plot movements of Creation, Fall, Redemption, and New Creation. In this essay, you will explain the four major plot movements of the biblical metanarrative, and you will show how the biblical metanarrative fosters a biblical worldview. Instructions After viewing the presentations Understanding the Metanarrative and What is a Worldview? and completing your textbook readings, you will write your essay. For this assignment, you must write a 7501,000-word essay. Please see the specific assignment requirements listed below. 1. Write a clear introductory paragraph including a thesis statement. A summative concluding paragraph must also be included. 2. Discuss the major movements of the biblical metanarrative (Creation, Fall, Redemption, and New Creation). Each of these major plot movements should be explained in a separate paragraph. There should be a minimum of 1 passage of Scripture included for each of the major plot movements. When defining and describing the biblical metanarrative, you should incorporate at least 2 theological references from the course materials. 3. Discuss how an understanding of the biblical metanarrative fosters a biblical worldview. This should be a separate paragraph from the biblical metanarrative paragraphs. In this section, seek to show how an understanding of the biblical metanarrative helps a person answer the five worldview questions. These are the questions of origin, identity, meaning, morality, and destiny. Below is a quick overview of the five worldview questions. a. Origin How did life begin in the first place? Where did I come from? b. Identity What does it mean to be a human? Am I more important than animals? c. Meaning Why are we here? Why am I here? d. Morality What is meant by right and wrong? How should I live? e. Destiny Is there life after death? What will happen to me when I die? 4. Incorporate at least 2 theological references in your paper using course resources. A lack of theological references will result in a loss of points. Please see the grading rubric for more information. 5. Incorporate at least 4 relevant biblical references. 6. Refer to the “Course Policies” in the course syllabus for the formatting expectations in this course. Use the provided Biblical Metanarrative Essay Template as a guide. -

Comparing Creations Guidelines
In this writing assignment, you will choose and compare two creation narratives that
were assigned in class.
What to choose?
To start, choose one creation narrative of those assigned for class that you found the
most interesting. For the second creation narrative, try to pick one you feel you can
compare and contrast with the first. There are no further restrictions.
The available narratives to choose from include: The Memphite Theology, Pyramid
Text 571, Coffin Text 76, Enuma Elish, Atrahasis, Against Toothache, The Lovely Gods,
The Song of Kumarbi, Genesis 1:12:4a, Genesis 2:4b4:16, Genesis 6:99:17, Psalm
104, and Job 38:141:34.
What to consider?
1. When choosing your narratives, make sure you choose two that you feel you
can read, research, and write about! Pick ones that are interesting to you.
2. Be conscious of the contexts of the narratives you chose and be ready to
research and write about them.
3. However, you dont need to do extensive research on both narratives (people
have written entire books on, for example, the Enuma Elish or the creations in
Genesis), but be familiar with their origins, the geographical and temporal
contexts of usage, and other details that will allow you to discuss the function
of the texts in your comparison.
4. Review JZ Smiths The End of Comparison: Redescription and Rectification
in preparation for this essay. Unless you are specifically engaging with Smiths
discussion of comparison for whatever reason, you should not quote or cite his
idea of the process of comparison.
5. If you do not include the description and comparison of two texts from the list
above, 20 points will be deducted from the overall grade for this assignment.
2
What to write?
In this, you should consider and utilize the method of comparison suggested by
Jonathan Z. Smith in The End of Comparison: Redescription and Rectification,
which involves a thick description of the narratives and a contextualization of the
particular texts. You will need to do some background research on the narratives you
have chosen and discuss those contexts and the potential function of the narratives.
Go beyond secondary texts assigned for class readings; I suggest that you use the
Reading List document as a starting point.
In your comparison, be specific. How is creation envisioned in the narrative (physical?
procreative? out of nothing?)? What are the natures and roles of the things created?
Who are the main players? What are their roles and relationships? This is not an
exhaustive list, but a starting point to come up with other questions.
Discuss the similarities and differences between the narratives. Highlight whether you
are looking at two narratives from the same culture or from different cultures, their
time periods, and the implications of that relationship.
What is the format?
This paper must be at least 3 pages (750 words) in length. Make sure to include page numbers. As this is a formal paper,
avoid using I statements and keep in mind your grammar and syntax.
Ensure everything is properly cited using either the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th
edition. This includes both in-text/footnote citations (with
page numbers for both quotations and paraphrasing) and a separate section at the end
with a Bibliography (this does not count towards the page or word
limit). Any usage of Generative AI MUST be mentioned in a disclaimer about how and
why you used it at the end of your Bibliography.

Assignment 1: Interrogating Religion Through Psychology: Freud, Jung, and Contemporary Perspectives
Length: 3 – 5 pages
Texts: Primary Sources: Freud, The Future of an Illusion; Jung, Religion and Psychology, include Secondary Sources Stevens and Rizzuto to deepen your analysis.
Do not simply summarize Freud or Jung. Focus on analyzing: compare and contrast their theories, evaluate their assumptions, explain their implications, and apply them to contemporary or personal examples.
For example, ask yourself:
- How do these theories explain why we (humans) create religious meaning?
- Where do Freud and Jung align or diverge in understanding belief?
- What are the strengths or limits of their explanations? Instructions:
Introduction with thesis statement: consider: what are you arguing and how will you prove this?
1. Freud: Key theory: religion as illusion, wish-fulfillment, dependence
2. Jung: Key theory: religion as symbolic function, individuation, numinous experience
Include secondary sources to enhance your argument
Include a personal reflection on theorists core values (consider something in your own life that reflects your theorists main ideas)
Conclusion
Citations: 47 from course readings, must include page numbers in your citations
Use your own voice (no need for academic jargon however you will use key terms and formal citations)

N/A (No needed for discussion posts)
No citations needed: This is exactly what the professor told me: “For the reading response, you do not need to include footnotes or a bibliography. If you wish to include a quote (which is not necessary to complete this assignment), you can do an in-text citation. (Chicago Style) Also, if you are going to include footnotes and bibliography, be consistent”.
(There will be bunches of reading pdf but don’t hesitate since I just need one reading pdf as a main focus and a secondary reading pdf to back up the first one.)
This is the reading response guidelines from the professor: “While the question will be about one reading or a concept discussed, bring another assigned reading from the week into your response, and explain how it relates to the question. While the question will differ from week to week, generally the questions will focus on the rhetorical argument of the reading, the function of a primary text, or how the author is explicitly or implicitly understanding the concept of religion”.
Write and submit a 250 word response to the question posed below. Bring another assigned reading from the week into your response, and explain how it relates to the question.
Some of the narratives we are looking at this week come from contexts outside of that we think of when we think of creation stories, such as Against Toothache, which comes from a Mesopotamian magical/medical context, and the Coffin Texts, which were written on coffins beginning after the Old Kingdom in Egypt. Why might acts of creation be invoked in contexts of healing or in the burial of the dead? How might this kind of context affect how these creation narratives were read or understood in the ancient past?
