  • Jesus Through Medieval Eyes

Each student will read Jesus Through Medieval Eyes by Grace Hamman and write a 1500-word reflection paper comparing medieval perceptions of Jesus to those of modern Christians today. Using Hammans work as a jumping-off point, each student will need to answer the following question: How would a medieval person view modern depictions/understandings of Jesus? In order to successfully answer this question with nuance and sophistication, consider how Jesus is depicted in todays world. What dominant images or ideas do we have about Jesus today? How do those differ from the images/ideas that you encountered in the medieval perspective? Which ideas of Jesus do you believe are very similar? How do you see medieval ideas still influencing present-day beliefs about Jesus? If a medieval Christian could travel into the future and visit us now, what kind of critiques would that person have regarding Christian perspectives today? It is not required to use sources beyond Hammans work; however, if it helps the student better understand the historical context or discussion, the student is encouraged to engage with other material. The purpose of this assignment is to help the student get into the mindset of the medieval Christian and begin to understand the difference between modern and medieval worldviews. The style of bibliography/footnotes will follow the Chicago/Turabian style.

Please edit and provide plagerism and AI free report. Chicago Turabian Referencing. Please correct footnotes for proper referencing.

  • Exploring Popular Religion

    Assignment Description

Inspired by the readings in Module 3, you are asked to engage a form of popular religion as lived theology. Popular religion refers to the everyday practices, rituals, devotions, and symbols through which people express faith, meaning, memory, and relationship with God (or the divine).

Option chossen: Interpret a Lived Practice from Memory

If access is limited, you may interpret a popular religious practice from your own life or family tradition (e.g., prayer routines, rituals around meals, home devotions, cultural-religious customs).

In your written reflection, address the following:

    1. Describe the practice or devotional space: What is it? Where does it take place? Who participates?
    2. Interpret it theologically: Drawing on the Module 3 readings, explain:
    • what theological themes are present (e.g., sacramentality, memory, embodiment, community),
    • how this practice functions as lived theology.
    1. Reflect pastorally or personally: How does this practice challenge or deepen your understanding of:
    • worship,
    • teaching faith,
    • ministry,
    • or your own faith and learning?
  • A QUEST FOR GODLINESS

    APA Format:

    1. TITLE PAGE
    2. citations
    3. footnotes

Students will read and assess J. I. Packers A Quest for Godliness (711 pages), including the following sections:

    1. Summary (23 pages). Put “Summary” in bold as a section heading, and then give an overview of the book’s unique angle, table of contents, and main argument, all in paragraph form. Strengths, weaknesses, and devotional thoughts should not be present in the summary. Do not just say what the author talked about; tell us what the author said about what the author talked about.
    2. Assessment (23 pages). Put “Assessment” in bold as a section heading, and then note the main strengths and weaknesses of the book from your perspective. What about the book’s structure and content was helpful? What was less helpful? What do you think the book should have added or left out? Did you agree with the author’s conclusions? Who would benefit from reading this book? Strive for both clarity and charity in your assessment.
    3. Reflection (35 pages). Put “Reflection” in bold as a section heading, and then answer the following questions: How might the Puritan vision of the Christian life, as Packer has explained it, inform or even correct your own views and practices of spirituality? Do you believe that you ought to adopt those changes? Why or why not?

*First, pay careful attention to the instructions and the rubric for the assignment. Second, avoid first-person language except in the “Reflection” section and always avoid contractions. Third, make sure you are familiar with the Midwestern Style Manual’s section on (and example of) Book Reviewsthis assignment has distinct sections that are different from the Style Manual’s Book Review, but there are many similarities. *
