  • REPLIES: Discussion Thread: Authorial Intent

    REPLIES:

MA Students: You should make a minimum of two peer responses that engage with the initial post and offer a meaningful response. That response can take several forms such as adding to the post by contributing something toward the meaning or by offering other potential reactions or any number of possible responses.

    250 WORDS EACH REPLY.

Texts make a kind of shared knowledge. There is an authors intended meaning and a readers interpretive meaning. In reading Chapter 1 of Hirschs book, it is easy to see that meaning even for the author can change. Chapter 2 gives way to meaning and implication and a discussion on a critics objective, namely that those attempting to uncover the authors meaning in a text may learn something, but those seeking only their own meanings will learn nothing new.

MA Students: For this second discussion, please write about what you have discovered about the meaning(s) of the text you are using for this course.

    attached instructions.

    Instructions

Think of a formal research project :

Research Project – How social media is utilized to cause polarization within society.

    1. Determine and list what type of research (e.g. basic research or applied research) you will explore.
    2. Generate a problem statement and 3-5 research questions.
    3. Conduct a literature review with a brief summary of at least three similar studies (2 pages).

If you have trouble picking a research topic, you may consider these tips and questions:

    • Is there a social problem that interests you or youre passionate about?
    • Is there a current event that interests me that I can generate a research topic from?
    • Is there a program at your organization or company that you would like to evaluate?

Paper II: Study One Methods/Results/Disc. (Spring 2026)

    • Due Feb 23 by 11:59pm Points 35 Submitting a file upload

Similar to Paper One, Paper Two has a lot of supporting materials to help you craft your paper. This includes paper instructions (which are long and detailed but worth reading!), a grading rubric, a checklist, and an example paper from a prior semester. If you look over ALL FOUR items, your chances of getting a good grade will improve dramatically!

! You must use this dataset for paper 2. Use of any other dataset will result in an automatic ZERO for the assignment.

    • (This is from a student from a prior semester. It is a good example, but do not copy it as the topic differs. Includes helpful notes from your instructor. It DOES include an Artificial Intelligence Appendix with prompts)
    • (This is also from a student from a prior semester but does NOT include AI help at all)

Additional Supporting Material for Paper II

    • (Questionnaires and Instructions)
    • (Similar to the one presented by Dr. Winter in the “Paper Clinics”)
    • (Word Document)

Choose a psychological claim about which you are skeptical. In thinking about psychological claims, consider topics such as astrology, ESP, tarot card readings, and ghost hunting. People believe in many psychological claims regardless of scientific findings.

Review the rubric for content expectations for this assignment and every assignment. Instructors adhere to the grading guidelines and rubric.

Use the critical elements of the rubric as headings within your paper (an excellent way to check that you meet the criteria):

    1. State your chosen psychological claim about which you are skeptical.
    2. Create a research question about your chosen claim.
    3. Provide the application of the scientific method to test your research question.
    4. Compare the application of the scientific method to other methods mentioned in this modul
  • Discussion 1

    • Are Freud’s theories scientific? Why?
    • What makes a psychological theory scientific?
  • Quantitative vs Qualitative Research Methods

What makes quantitative research more or less valid, reliable, and generalizable? Are there any particular reasons why you might not want to use qualitative research methods?
