  • Topic 7 DQ 2

According to Chapter 7 in your course textbook, the first artifact the learner encounters in the dissertation process is the 10 Strategic Points which is divided into topics that develop the research idea into a dissertation study. These points emerge from researching literature on a topic based on or aligned with the defined need in the literature as well as the personal passion, future career purpose, and degree area of the learner.

How does your potential research topic align with your personal passion, future career purpose, and degree area? How can you assure your potential topic remains aligned with these three components as you delve deeper into the literature? Do you feel any of these three components dominate the others? How can you make sure to maintain a balance between the three? (This response does not require research support.)

  • Types of Research and Application to Workplace Problem

Objectives Identify qualitative and quantitative research processes Deliverables Write a 2-3 page (not including the title and reference pages) APA 7 formatted paper with an introduction and conclusion APA 7 headings for each section of the paper At least (2) research sources, including 1 source from a periodical database that is most relevant, accurate, recent (less than 5 years old), and reliable. Step 1: Research Find qualitative, quantitative, and mixed (both quantitative and qualitative) research sources. Capstone project topics cannot be used in this course due to the potential for self-plagiarism, a new topic must be chosen instead. Step 2: Consider Compare and contrast qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-design research characteristics. Identify a problem in your place of work or at a clinical site What type of research listed above would you conduct to address this problem? Why or why not? Step 3: Write Write a paper that addresses the questions above. Step 4 Save and submit When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to Canvas. Types of Research Template

Answer the below questions via audio, video, or written response. Questions Create a new thread and answer the following questions: What is your Synthesis Question? Is there a common opinion on your topic? What patterns do you notice?

  • Source annotation and evaluation

Submission Guidelines: Please… do not Submit no more than 48 hours before the deadline. Use the entire week to revisit and improve your work before submission. Purpose: This exercise helps you gather and organize source information, making it easier to outline and draft your executive summary. Follow the template provided in the weekly module for formatting. Requirements: Submit 10 annotations (2 scholarly/trade journals, 3 professional sources, and 5 public sources). Sources must be from 2024 or later to ensure relevance (any annotations for sources before 2024 will receive 0 points). If you have more than 10 sources, submit the best 10 examples. Only 10 annotations will be scored. Annotation Expectations: Source Type and APA Citation (2 points) Indicate whether the source is scholarly, professional, or public. Include an APA citation with the access date, database, and a link (so I can access the source). Summary and Evidence (6 points) Summary: Briefly summarize the source in 1-2 paragraphs, highlighting the author’s main argument (pro/con or mixed stance). Use phrases like “the author argues” or “the article states.” Evidence: List specific pro and con evidence (e.g., quotes, stats, examples) and explain their importance. Include around 3-5 pieces of evidence that you think are the most helpful in helping to establish your credibility. The key here isn’t quantity; instead, it’s all about the quality of the evidence. Stylizing: Bold or underline the most critical evidence for easy reference later when drafting. For example, bolding or underlining the most important stats or quotes, or highlighting your most in-depth analysis. Be sure to leave yourself sufficient time to do this helpful step. Source Credibility (2 points) Address how and why the source is credible by considering: The authors credentials and previous work. The publication’s reliability. Would your peers know of it? The type of evidence provided and its reliability. Any potential biases or gaps in the content. Where/how did you locate the source? Additional Notes: Refer to the provided resources in the weekly module if you have questions and reach out for further assistance. While only 10 annotations are required, consider annotating additional sources for practice and preparation.
  • Research Methods: Evidence-based Practice in Public Health

    1. Critically interpret public health evidence, both quantitative and qualitative.

    2. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of systematic reviews and meta- analyses.

    3. Apply evidence to inform professional practice and decision making.

    Assessment Guidelines

Using the public health topic identified during assessment 1, write a critical review of the literature, including evidence drawn from at least one systematic review.

The focus of this critical review should be to inform a key area of professional practice and so should represent a thorough and critical synthesis of the most recent and best evidence available, concluding with specific recommendations for practice.

  • Essay

    • Use examples from published research within my discipline( risk, hazard in environmental) to define and explain qualitative and quantitative research philosophies.
    • Briefly summarise one research paper that uses a qualitative research method/philosophy and one research paper that uses a quantitative research method/philosophy.
    • Highlight key elements of the method and the main findings from the research paper.
    • Provide a list of references used.
  • Summarize and Respond to Research

Touchstone 1.2: Summarize and Respond to Research Overview What You Will Learn: In this Touchstone, you will practice your critical reading skills by summarizing and responding to the source you found in Touchstone 1.1. You will deepen your ability to engage with scholarly or credible information, build your analytical thinking, and prepare for future academic writing (including your final paper for this course). Why It Matters: Learning to carefully summarize and thoughtfully respond to sources is critical for academic and real-world success. Whether you’re supporting a business plan, drafting a research paper, or making personal decisions, being able to accurately understand and critically evaluate information helps you communicate more effectively and make stronger arguments. What You Will Hand In: A 23-page paper that provides a detailed summary of the source’s argument. You’ll also respond to that argument with your own thoughts based on the source, including examples from the source (quotes or paraphrases of specific lines). See Step 2 for more details. Keys to Success: Develop and submit your own original work. Read your source a few times and take notes using the SQ3R strategy you learned. Summarize the key arguments of the source. Provide your analysis and reflections based on the source. Helpful Links: Academic Integrity Guidelines Ethical Standards and Appropriate Use of AI APA Style: Citation Help Share your feedback on Touchstones Instructions Step 1: Read and Process Your Source Your source should offer clear, trustworthy information that helps you understand your topic more deeply. Using SQ3R helps you stay engaged, remember more, and prepare for future assignments where youll build on your research. To read your source critically and effectively, use the SQ3R method, which stands for: Survey: Skim the source to get a general idea of its structure and content. Look at headings, subheadings, visuals, and the introduction and conclusion. Question: Turn headings and key points into questions. What do you want to learn? What does the title make you curious about? Read: Read the source carefully to find answers to your questions. Take notes as you go. Recite: Summarize key points in your own words. Try saying them out loud or jotting them down without looking back. Review: Revisit your notes and the source. What were the most important ideas? How do they help you understand your topic? You should also review the tutorials that introduce how to think about and understand what you read: Information Literacy, Understanding Bias, Detecting Assumptions and Generalizations, Reading Difficult Texts Critically. Step 2: Write a Summary and Response of the Article (23 pages) Your essay should include three parts: Summary: What is the authors main point? What question(s) are the author(s) trying to answer, and what are their findings? What is the central argument? What kind of evidence supports their claims? Is there a place where you noted a strong argument or one that could be better developed? Analysis: Write a short analysis of the article. Is the argument well-reasoned and supported by evidence? Do you notice any biases or assumptions? What is your response to the ideas in the article? You can agree, disagree, extend, or question ideas in the source. Usefulness: Evaluate how well the source would support a student research project. How can this source contribute to a future essay that you might write? Do you have further questions, including ones for future research? How might it come in handy to back up a claim (or address a counterclaim)? Step 3: Review and Submit Review the rubric to confirm that you have met all the requirements of the Touchstone. Once you are happy with it, you can submit it as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file. Your submission must include your name, the name of the course, the date, and the title of your assignment.
