  • Experimentation

Prepare Textbook: Carey, S. S. (2012). A beginner’s guide to scientific method (4th ed.). Wadsworth, Cengage Learning. Chapter 4: Experimentation Prompt Answer the following Show That You Know questions for this unit: What is the relationship between the predicted outcome and the hypothesis being tested in an experiment? An experimental outcome can be compromised in two ways. What are they, and how do they differ? What is the difference between an experimental group and a control group? Discuss in detail how each of them is used. What problems do conceptually vague claims and vague predictions pose when we are designing experiments? Explain in detail. What are single- and double-blind experiments, and how do they address the problems posed by experimenter bias and experimental subject bias? Important! The textbook readings are the primary sources for these questions, but you must also use internet research. In addition to the course textbooks, you must use at least one credible reference source found on the internet for each question response. Do not use quotations. Paraphrase and cite appropriately. Do not use sources such as Wikipedia, YouTube, or blogs, as they are not credible enough for college-level scholarly work. Procedure In APA format, write 250 words per question. Label each question. You may repeat the question and follow it with your response. The words of the question do not count toward the required 250. Include an APA-formatted title page and reference page See the Instructor Guidelines page for general writing requirements. Consider the grading rubric when planning your assignment.

  • Research methods

Locate evidence from appropriate primary and secondary sources to support AND refute your hypothesis or question. You should begin with selected terms from your concept mapping class exercise to focus your search and divide the labor amongst team members. ODU Library searches of journal databases (CINAHL, PUBMED, PSYCHINFO, Cochrane), feedback from peer review, and hand searches of primary and secondary sources are good sources of information. You may also contact the ODU Librarian for assistance with finding good articles. Choose a minimum of the 20 most promising articles. At least 16 must be from primary sources, one a meta-analysis or systematic review, one a source of statistical information (WHO, CDC, Worldbank, CIA, etc.) and one text or source supporting your methodology in answering your research question. This is just a start. You are expected to use as many resources as necessary to fully support, with citations, your paper. Compose a literature review table using the sources. Fill in the blanks of the literature review table, answering each question for all sources. You can find the table template in the resources section of the course site.

  • Interdisciplinary research skills

IST 397: Annotated Bibliography This is an assignment that guides you through the early stages of the helps you hone your interdisciplinary (and disciplinary) research skills. This assignment also lays the groundwork for the prospectus (research proposal) and your interdisciplinary research project in IST 497. For the complex research question you’ve composed, locate two scholarly sources that relate to the problem and summarize them in 3-5 paragraphs each. Provide relevant information about the articles: publication date, researcher details (name, institutional affiliation, research background/focus), etc. As a summary of the article, you should be sure to include a brief overview of research methodology, argument/claim/hypothesis, and findings/conclusion. Next, compose a 5-10 sentence critical analysis of the research, including a discussion of the value of the research for your own work. Does this research provide relevant evidence or information for your own work? How and why might it be useful for your project? The basic exercise described above will be applied to both of the sources you analyze for this assignment. A concluding paragraph (or two) in this assignment should consider how the two pieces of evidence you’ve analyzed might work together as part of a larger interdisciplinary project. Things to consider in your conclusion: How might your two different sources relate to one another and provide insight into your particular complex problem? How would integration of the insights from each of these sources serve to solve or better understand the complex problem you’ve defined? For further examples of how a good summary of research looks, please feel free to look over this resource on annotated bibliographies, paying particular attention to summary annotations and evaluative annotations (since you are doing critical evaluation in this assignment).
