  • Critical reflection session 4

In 1947 a young Palestinian shepherd boy was caring for his sheep. When he came to a place called Qumran, he noticed a number of caves, and like any other young boy, he picked up some stones and began throwing them towards the caves. Soon he heard a clank and immediately recognized that something was in that cave besides mud. He climbed into the cave and found a number of jars containing scrolls, though he was unaware of what the scrolls said. From that day on, scholars have been examining those scrolls to determine their value to understanding the Bible more thoroughly. And as they examined the date of these scrolls, they were amazed as to how far back they date. Some of those same scholars began to change their minds about the Scriptures accuracy, while others attempted to make the facts conform to their pre-conceived ideas.

Write a one-page paper, which concisely addresses the following questions:

    • What is the value of the Dead Sea Scrolls in light of the previous earliest manuscript?
    • Reflect on how an early date for the Dead Sea Scrolls provides value for us today?

    SESSION 4 READINGS:

  • Core Reading Programs

Choose a core reading program. Evaluate its 3rd grade scope and sequence. Computer programs are NOT core reading programs. They are supplemental resources. DO NOT USE a computer program. Consider the following questions: (Include the questions on your submission)

    1. Are more frequent sound/spellings introduced before less frequent sound/spellings?
    2. Is a combination of consonant and short-vowel sounds introduced early in a sequence?
    3. How many lessons separate the introduction of letters that both sound and look alike; for example /b/ b and /d/ d?
    4. How does the overall scope and sequence of phonics elements compare with the General Sequence for Teaching Phonics Elements listed in Chapter 6?
    5. What modifications should be made for a student with an eligibility of Specific Learning Disability in Basic Reading Skills and Reading Fluency?

  • Research Brief Introduction & Sample Studies

    Guidelines

    Please read the first.

You will write a persuasive and evidence-based introduction for your research brief. (This introduction will ideally be revised and later serve as the introduction portion of your final Research Brief assignment, later.)

The introduction should make a clear case for why your specific topic is important. All claims must be backed with evidence, likely from secondary sources. The text should provide a clear argument about who can use the findings from the research brief and how they might apply them.

In addition to the introductory text, you will also:

    • Provide citations for 3 primary communication research studies you plan on reading and evaluating for your literature review. Each citation must be formatted correctly according to APA standards.
    • Copy-and-paste the abstract from each of the 3 studies, to help me verify that your selections are viable for your chosen topic.
    • Provide a full References page that accounts for all of the evidence you cited for your introductory text, as well as the 3 primary communication research studies you’ve selected for your upcoming Literature Review.

It is very important that you review the before starting this assignment. The introduction portion of the paper encompasses all the text that appears underneath the title of the paper and before the Literature Review heading. For this assignment, you are only writing this introductory text. Please be reminded that evidence for the introduction can come from multiple types of sources; you do not need to rely on only primary research studies for this section. In fact, it is more likely that secondary research may be helpful here. (Once you transition into the Literature Review portion of the paper later in the semester, you will be restricted to primary research studies only.)

  • A rose for emily

Creative Response #3: “A Rose for Emily”

Length: 500 words (approximately two pages double spaced – multi paragraphs, please! Indent the beginning of each paragraph)

Format: Times New Roman 12, one inch margins, double-spaced (Use this font)

    Due February 8 2026

Upload: MS Word Attachment or PDF ONLY

Choose either A or B (but not both)

    A. In “A Rose for Emily,” William Faulkner accomplishes a difficult writing task. He tells the story of Miss Emily Grierson from a unique perspective: the first-person plural (“we”). By doing so, he tells us about the strange events in her life from the collective viewpoints of the townspeople rather than from that of one person. He lets us know about individual townspeople’s views of the events in her life through dialogue at various points throughout the story.

In this writing assignment, you will approach the story from the perspective of one character with special insight into Miss Emily’s life – Tobe, her African-American servant. Using your imagination while staying true to Faulkner’s plot, in at least 500 words, write a journal/diary entry from the first person singular point of view of Tobe, Miss Emily’s servant. Choose one or two events from the story as the incident which you are focusing on. The incident(s) should be one which Tobe would have witnessed or have close knowledge of, such as Miss Emily’s refusal to bury her father, or the murder and subsequent living with her suitor’s body. Incorporate two instances of dialogue into your account, such as a conversation Tobe might have had with Miss Emily, her father, or any other character mentioned in the story. Please note: Use your imagination but stay true to Faulkner’s plot.

    OR

    B. You are the current mayor of Jefferson, Mississippi and are asked to deliver the eulogy at Miss Emily Grierson’s funeral in at least 500 words. “Friends we are gathered here today to mourn the death of our longtime citizen, Miss Emily Grierson.” In your response, you can also describe what is happening during and after the delivery of the eulogy. How are the townsfolk responding to or reacting to your comments – in agreement, etc?

    • What you would say, as a representative of the town, about the role that Miss Emily has played in the town’s history?
    • What aspects of Miss Emily’s life would you focus on?
    • How do you think she would best like to be remembered?
    • How do you think the town remembers her?
    • What are some events in her life that you would like to focus on – the china painting lessons to the young children, etc.?

Please note: Use your imagination but stay true to Faulkner’s plot. Don’t create a totally different story.

DON’T FORGET: Come up with five open-ended questions about “A Rose For Emily” and post them to Discussion Board #1

eflect on your understanding of the concepts you have learned in modules 5 that addresses Master Data Management (MDM) and Metadata Management (MM). From what you have learned in this module, what propositions or change-recommendations would you propose to your organization regarding MDM and MM, and how these could be better leveraged to optimize the firm’s enterprise wide Data Management? Reflect upon the connection(s) among Data Storage Solutions and MDM and MM. Then provide some tangible propositions on how data storage technologies, particularly data vault data warehouses, dimension model data warehouses and lake houses can/could be used to optimize/ maximize / enhance the management of Master Data and Metadata within your organization. Which of the three would you propose to your organization for use in MDM and/or MM and why? Then read the article titled data-management-101-ebook-databricks.pdf which elaborates data management in/on DATA BRICKS, an emergent platform for data storage, business intelligence and machine learning. What does Databricks bring to data management that conventional approaches do not? How do you see artificial intelligence (AI) technology contributing to and/or transforming/disrupting data management as a program, process, discipline or profession? CL 10 Take-home Midterm Paper Prompt

The midterm assignment for CL 10 is to write a 2,000-word research paper on any book that we read in the first half of the course. Please demonstrate to me in your paper that you actually have conducted research and have thought deeply about this text. Analyze it in detail. To complete this assignment, you MUST cite at least 2-3 secondary sources (preferably books or articles). You should cite your sources in a minimum of 10-12 notes or bibliographic citations. Quote from your sources to support your arguments; simply mentioning the names of texts is inadequate. Show me that you have read them! A quotation from the novel you are analyzing does not count as a source. Online resources such as JSTOR and Proquest (both available on the UCI Library website) may be particularly helpful to locate sources. Including page numbers and quotation marks in your citations is necessary, not optional. You jeopardize your grade by not doing so. You will not receive credit if your citations are all from one source. Long quotations from the readings should be avoided. If you do include many long quotations, your essay should be longer than 2,000 words. Papers shorter (even slightly) than 2,000 words will not receive full credit. Limit your use of videos, Wikipedia entries, and websites. Do not use blogs, theses, or dissertations. Visiting the library to check out or consult books is strongly recommended. Aim to find the standard works on a topic and engage with them, not just anything you locate online. A standard work is typically published in a recognized journal or by a university press. Your paper will be evaluated in part on the quality of your sources. If you are unsure about quality, you can check the number of citations a source receives on Google Scholar. Ask me for suggestions. Try to be analyticalrather than merely praise the genius of a particular creative figure. Writing that an author was a genius is empty hero worship, not research. It is essential to be scrupulous when you are quoting from the work of someone else. I will be happy to recommend readings and help you select a topic. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness or ignorance but rather an expression of a desire to learn. Starting to work on this assignment as soon as possible is an excellent strategy to improve the likelihood of receiving a good grade.

Here are 11 keys to writing an excellent midterm (and writing strong essays more generally):

    1. Limit your paragraphs to 12 lines and structure them to make a specific point.

    2. Make sure you spell check your paper.

    3. Write your paper in a manner that advances an argument and is not merely a reflection of the order in which you read sources. It must have a beginning, evidence, analysis, and a conclusion.

    4. Cite the language of the figure or figures you are writing about, yet be critical about them. Argue and disagree!

    5. Use secondary literature to conduct your analysis and not simply to provide citations.

    6. Avoid repetition and make a point once and only once. Doing otherwise suggests the absence of an argument.

    7. Employ concepts and define them.

    8. Describe specific narrative forms, explain their significance, and avoid vagueness.

    9. Locate ideas in relation to their historical moment.

    10. Provide complete citations as described above.

    11. Supply examples to support your assertions.

Your paper must be uploaded to Canvas by 11:59pm on Thursday February 5. This is a hard deadline, for I need time to read and grade your papers and return them quickly so you can obtain feedback on your performance in the class.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ON ANY OF THE ABOVE ASK ME IN CLASS!
