  • Colonial Influence on Founding Documents

    Prompt

For this assignment, you will review key philosophical movements and events of the Colonial Period in the United States and explain how they influenced the creation of the Declaration of Independence. You will utilize your critical thinking skills to analyze how ideas from this period helped shape the values and arguments found in this founding document.

Write a 1,000-1,250 word primary source analysis explaining how the Mayflower Compact, the American Enlightenment, and the First Great Awakening helped to set the stage for the Declaration of Independence. In your writing, be sure to provide specific examples and cite evidence from relevant primary sources.

Be sure to answer to following questions with supporting evidence in your essay:

    • What core ideas from the American Enlightenment, First Great Awakening, and Mayflower Compact are in the Declaration of Independence?
    • How did these ideas challenge the authority of the British Empire and/or traditional monarchy?
    • In your view, which of these colonial influences had the greatest impact on the Declaration, and why?
    • Which of ideas from this period remain the most relevant in today’s political climate? Briefly reflect on how they connect to a current event or debate that has personal relevance to your life.

    Formatting & Sources

Please write your paper in the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) format. You may refer to the course material for supporting evidence, but you must also use at least two primary and three secondary external sources and cite them using CMS format. If you use any Study.com lessons as sources, please also cite them in CMS (including the lesson title and instructor’s name).

    • Primary sources are first-hand accounts such as interviews, advertisements, speeches, company documents, statements, and press releases published by the company in question.
    • Secondary sources come from peer-reviewed scholarly journals, such as the Journal of American History. You may use sources like JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Open Research Library to find articles from these journals. Secondary sources may also come from reputable websites with .gov, .edu, or .org in the domain. (Wikipedia is not a reputable source, though the sources listed in Wikipedia articles may be acceptable.)
  • Week 10 Assignment – The Value of Fair Treatment in the Work…

    Overview

In this assignment, you evaluate and assess workplace protection legislation, identify the law pursuant to the employment-at-will (EAW) doctrine and legal exceptions, apply this understanding to a business scenario, and explain legal requirements for hiring new employees and your own home state laws as to workers’ compensation and immigration.

    Instructions

Respond to the following in 46 pages:

    1. Cite two federal laws that you believe are the most important for protecting employees from workplace discrimination. Provide a compelling argument for the effectiveness of the legislation in protecting employees and two case law examples to support your assessment.
    2. Explain the actions that employers must take to verify legal employment in the United States.
    3. Some states do not allow undocumented workers, or those not legally allowed to work in the United States, to receive workers’ compensation benefits. Provide the law in your home state and a compelling and supported (with research) argument advocating for or against your state’s practice of allowing or denying workers’ compensation benefits to undocumented or illegal workers.
    4. Provide a comprehensive summary of the employment-at-will (EAW) doctrine that includes all possible legal exceptions designed to fight wrongful termination.
    5. Cite and support (with research) an appropriate EAW exception that the employee in each of the following scenarios could reasonably argue to save their job.

Scenario 1: JoAnn, a manager, started a blog on the company website for employee grievances and problems. She noticed that a worker was protesting that allegedly no Asian American employees had gotten a raise in two years at the company. Christine, the employee, also criticized how much CEO Elon had made last year and how he was “out of touch” with the realities of his employees. JoAnn reminded Christine that she was an employee-at-will. The next day, Christine talked to her fellow co-workers about forming a union. JoAnn fired Christine, and Christine is suing for wrongful termination.

Scenario 2: Steven, a department supervisor, fired his secretary, Ann. Ann, a devout Christian, had been putting Right-to-Life flyers in the employee breakroom. Steven talked to Ann twice and reiterated her actions were not appropriate. Ann continued to leave the pamphlets and was also taking time away from work to pray at her desk during the busiest times of the morning. Ann is suing for wrongful termination.

  • Practice writing synthesis

    Objective

Write one synthesis paragraph (175 225 words) that weaves information from all three texts, highlighting where the authors agree, where they diverge, and what questions remain. Use correct APA 7thed. intext citations.

Provided TextsText 1 Empathy and Fiction

Gaines (2021) reviews 30 neuroscience and psychology studies to argue that characterdriven fiction measurably boosts empathy and theory of mind. FunctionalMRI scans show heightened activity in brain regions linked to emotion recognition after participants read literary short stories. Gaines concedes that nonfiction improves factual knowledge, yet claims only fiction places the reader inside anothers lived experience. The article urges educators to assign at least two fiction titles per term but admits little is known about how long empathy gains last or whether they translate to civic behavior.

Text 2 Critical Thinking and Nonfiction

Simmons (2020) challenges the fictionfirst view, presenting results from a twoyear classroom study (N = 412) where half the students read narrative nonfiction, half literary fiction. Students in the nonfiction group outperformed peers by 18 % on argumentativewriting rubrics and by 25 % on factretention quizzes. Simmons acknowledges fictions empathy benefits but argues that empathy rarely predicts realworld decisionmaking. The article calls for integrative reading lists yet notes a research gap on how mixedgenre curricula affect longterm analytic skills.

Text 3 Reading Choice & Genre Diversity

Lin (2022) surveys 1,600 adult readers across five countries and finds that 70 % routinely choose books from only one genreusually the genre they enjoyed in adolescence. Despite documented benefits of both fiction and nonfiction, readers rarely diversify without external nudges such as bookclub prompts or school assignments. Lin highlights overlap between Gainess empathy findings and Simmonss criticalthinking results, suggesting that balanced genre exposure may deliver the broadest cognitive payoff. However, Lin notes few studies explore how digitalfirst reading habits influence genre loyalty, identifying this as an important gap for future work.

    Your Task

    1. Read all three texts.
    2. Write one synthesis paragraph (175 225 words) that:
    • Summarizes key ideas and evidence from each text.
    • Explicitly shows agreements, disagreements, and gaps.
    • Uses APA intext citations (e.g., Gaines, 2021; Simmons, 2020; Lin, 2022).

Note: This activity is focused on entirely on synthesis writing, so you do not need to worry about formatting your work in a typical APA-styled paper (title page, double-spaced, reference page, etc.). Just write the paragraph and include APA in-text citations to demonstrate that you know how to synthesize the material and give credit to the authors with the in-text citations.

  • hate crime

I believe offenders who commit hate crimes should receive more severe penalties than people who commit similar crimes without a bias motive. Hate crimes do not only harm the individual victim, but they also affect an entire community. When someone is targeted because of their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, it can make others in that group feel unsafe or afraid. Because of this, the harm spreads beyond just one person.

In sociology, we learn that society is made up of many different groups, and everyone should be treated equally. Hate crimes go against this idea because they are meant to intimidate or threaten a whole group of people. For example, if someone vandalizes a place of worship because of the religion of the people who attend there, it sends a message of fear to that entire religious community.

According to many lectures and readings, hate crime laws are meant to protect communities and discourage discrimination and violence. Giving stronger penalties can show that society does not accept crimes motivated by hate. For these reasons, I think hate crimes should be punished more seriously than other similar crimes.
