Qualitative Research Study Critique
Qualitative Research Study Critique Instructions: Select one of the qualitative studies published within the past five years from your Literature Review Synthesis Table (from Module 5) that directly addresses your PIO/PICO question. Try to avoid selecting a metasynthesis, systematic review, literature review, or mixed methods study for this assignment.Using that study, perform a systematic critical appraisal of its qualitative research. Answer the following questions: Was there a clearly identifiable and articulated: Purpose? Research question? Justification for using the qualitative design/method? Phenomenon that is the focus of the research? Were study sample participants representative based on the research purpose and sampling criteria? Were participant characteristics described? Was sampling adequate, as evidenced by achieving saturation of data? Were data collected in a manner that minimized bias? Were the people who collected data appropriately trained? Data analysis: Was a verification process used in every step by checking and confirming with participants the trustworthiness of analysis and interpretation? Was there a description of how data were analyzed (i.e., method), by computer or manually? Are findings supported by the narrative data (participant quotes)? Are conclusions clearly explained? Do the study findings appear to be trustworthy? That is, do you have confidence in the truth value of the results? Does the study contribute any meaningful evidence that can be used in nursing practice or that is useful to the nursing discipline? What quality rating would you assign this study based on the table below? Provide a rationale for your choice and state whether you would feel comfortable using this particular study as part of an evidence-based policy change decision in your workplace. Quality Rating for Qualitative Studies High/Good Quality The report discusses efforts to enhance or evaluate the quality of the data and the overall inquiry in sufficient detail, and it describes the specific techniques used to enhance the quality of the inquiry. Evidence of some or all of the following is found in the report: Transparency: Describes how information was documented to justify decisions, how data were reviewed by others, and how themes and categories were formulated. Diligence: Reads and rereads data to check interpretations; seeks opportunity to find multiple sources to corroborate evidence. Verification: The process of checking, confirming, and ensuring methodologic coherence. Self-reflection and self-scrutiny: Being continuously aware of how a researchers experiences, background, or prejudices might shape and bias analysis and interpretations. Participant-driven inquiry: Participants shape the scope and breadth of questions; analysis and interpretation give voice to those who participated. Insightful interpretation: Data and knowledge are linked in meaningful ways to relevant literature. Low Quality The study contributes little to the overall review of findings and has few, if any, of the features listed for High/Good quality. This critique will be written as a formal APA paper with appropriate headings to separate major concepts within the paper. The paper should address the questions listed above, but students should not write in a question/answer format. In other words, do not include the questions in your paper. Instead, use the paper to narratively answer the questions above and provide a comprehensive critique of your chosen study. You must also submit a copy of the qualitative article you critiqued with the paper. Assignment Guidelines and Rubric This is a formal APA paper. Therefore, all content should be written in third person following correct APA formatting rules. A title page and reference list are required for this assignment. However, you should not include an abstract. The paper should be double-spaced and typed in size 12 Times New Roman font. A reference page with corresponding in-text citations are required. At minimum, students must reference two peer-reviewed resources that were not included in this weeks readings. You may also include references from this weeks readings, but these will not count toward the two required, external peer-reviewed resources. The paper will be around 1000 words in length, not including the title and reference pages. Review the grading guidelines below for more details. - Sub-Topics and Organization:
- Identify the sub-topics of your body paragraphs and show an organizational framework.
- Meaningful Use of Assigned Sources:
- Use at least 2 of the assigned sources for your topic question in the outline (the assigned sources are listed under your topic question).
- “Use” of a source in this class means incorporating short (not more than 2 sentences) direct quotes from each source you use. Quotes should provide unique, detailed information and ideas from the sources, not broad concepts that might be found in any source on the topic. Work that does not clearly make meaningful use of the assigned sources will not be graded.
- USE ONLY the sources provided in course content. No outside sources, no research (unless cleared with instructor first)

Box 1-Right idea, but start the intro paragraph with the conclusion that you want the court to arrive at: The enforcement of the contract against the Joneses would be unconscionable because the contract involves a gross disparity and overreaching/oppressive influences. Provide the overall rule statement. Then, include a sentence explaining how there is gross disparity. Then, include a sentence explaining how there is overreaching/oppressive influences. Finally, provide a summary sentence.
Box 2- Right idea, but we want to make it persuasive for the Joneses. Instead, think about how you can alter the language just a bit to something more persuasive and incorporate the issue. For example, you could state the QP as a single sentence: Is a contract for a laundry pair that is more than three times the retail cost unconscionable? Or, you could break the QP into two different sentences, focusing on each of the prongs gross disparity and overreaching/oppressive influences.
Box 3- This is a good overview paragraph for the memo. Here we need to make this an overview paragraph for our client. Start the paragraph with the conclusion we want the court to draw. Then, state the two-prong test. Then, how each prong of the test met.
Blue pin- Cite Derby
Yellow highlight- This should be greatly condensed. Focus just on the most important and legally significant facts. Two to three paragraphs would provide plenty of room to explain the facts.
Yellow highlight- Who? What was distributed? How? You have not explained sufficient information for a reader to understand what happened in the case.
red srike through- This is not the rule statement I gave you in my feedback in the memo.
Blue pin- citation
Blue pin- citation
Red strike through-The last sentence should be the focused conclusion I gave you in the memo feedback.
Box 4- In the rule application paragraph for this section, we want to draw analogies and distinctions with the two cases we have just explained in the rule explanation paragraphs. Are there any comparisons that can be drawn between the cases you discussed and the Joneses? What about the large price disparity compares to the other cases where there was gross disparity? Rule application is not just a repeating of the facts. Rule application draws analogies and distinctions with the two previous cases to arrive at a conclusion for gross disparity based on the comparison. Here is an example: Just as in Sims and Derby where one party would receive all of the benefit and another would receive little, here the Joneses received a small benefit and Advantage received a benefit three times the value of what the Joneses received.
Yellow hightlight- See my comments in the gross disparity section – make the same changes in this section as well, the only difference is that this section is discussing the second prong: overreaching/oppressive influences.
Red strike- remove
Box 5- Start the conclusion with the conclusion that you want the court to arrive at: The enforcement of the contract against the Jonses would be unconscionable because the contract involves a gross disparity and overreaching/oppressive influences. Rough Draft
Essay 2 (Analysis & Argument) (1750-2250) ENC 1101 Objective: Write a well-developed essaydouble-spaced with your name, date, and section in top left cornerthat addresses one of the following topics: Option 1: Choose two or three versions of a story, preferably from different media, and write a well-organized essay comparing them and asserting a value judgment about them, e.g., which is more effective? Why? (Example: Johnny Depp is a better Willy Wonka than Gene Wilder because the former is creepier and truer to the original book.) Option 2: This paper will analyze the effects on American culture of some kind of media addressed to the general publicadvertising, television, radio, magazines, film, etc. You might choose some popular celebrity or television show and consider why that person or show appeals to people. (Example: Why is Taylor Swift such an influence on American culture?) Or you can explore how a particular form of public media reinforces stereotypes or American myths. (Example: According to hip hop music, what does it mean to be a success?) This paper may include both print and non-print sources. Option 3: This option is for those feeling especially creative or who like practical application of knowledge. In this option you will actually create a public service announcement, either print or short video (think newspaper/billboard or TV commercial) for an issue of your choosing. Target your ad toward your classmates. The style and content is entirely up to you, but it may not be overtly vulgar or offensive. Once you have designed your ad, you must write up 1500-2000 words describing in detail why you chose each element of your piece. That is, tell me why you chose to have the fuscia background, the orange-spotted dinosaur, and the monkey in the top hat represent your new anti-smoking campaign. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how you analyze visual texts; in order to compose an effective advertisement, you must first understand how advertisements work. To this end, your outside sources will most likely include references to advertising techniques or examples of similar real-world advertisements. You will be judged primarily on how the elements work together, rather than on your artistic ability or your ability to use PhotoshopTM and CanvaTM, but remember that visual impressions are important. Writing Tasks: As you outline and draft your essay, keep the following in mind: Begin with a thesis statement that is a direct response to the topic. Assume that your reader may need refreshing about the subject matter of each essay. Remember that a thesis has to be debatable. You cant just say X and Y have similarities and differences. Thats a fact, not a thesis. One of your reasons may not be I like X because I havent seen/read/heard Y. Regardless of which option you choose, you MUST include a Works Cited page that includes at least three outside sources. (Remember that the source texts/images count as sources.) -
Intro and thesis (5-7 sentences)
PAPER #1 INTRO AND THESIS DUE (5-7 Sentences(via CANVAS by 11:59pm Write a well-worded introduction that engages your chosen topic (a specific comedian and/or work of comedy/humor) in an interesting and attention-grabbing way. This stylish and informative paragraph should begin with a hook, anecdote, a fact or interesting quote, some creative way to grab the readers attention. Most importantly, this intro must include your thesis statement. In the case of Paper #1, your thesis statement is essentially your argument/position/perspective about a specific comedian and their content or a work of satire or humor (Stand-up Comedy, TV series, animated or feature film, podcast, news show, illustration, ec.). It is possible for your thesis to contain more than one argument; in fact, it is encouraged that your argument contains multiple aspects that you will prove in separate, more developed body paragraphs during your paper. -
