Instructions: Students are invited to submit an approximately 2000-word research paper that asserts an argumentative thesis statement in response to an empirical research question in Canadian political science. Submissions should include engagement with at least 5 scholarly sources.

Argumentation: The goal is to provide a clear and concise response to one of the chosen research questions posted below, backed by rational consideration of available evidence. This exercise is designed to help develop research and writing skills that requires consulting the scientific literature to support an argument. A counterargument and/or limitation to the thesis statement should be considered. At least one of the scholarly sources cited should be used to explain the counterargument.

Essay Format & Citations: Include a substantive title and a complete bibliography/works cited page. The Works Cited page should include a complete list of all resources that were used to develop the essay. All pages should be numbered. Chicago Author-Date Citation (with page numbers) style is preferred. Regardless of the selected citation format, submissions must include page numbers for in-text citations, i.e., (Cairns, 1971: 302). Use numbered paragraphs for online documents that do not have page numbers.

Topic: How have social media platforms and digital communication reshaped political participation, grassroots mobilization, or public trust in democratic institutions in Canada? Use empirical evidence to support your analysis. Students may focus on a specific platform, issue, or time period.

  • By drawing upon the concept of intersectionality, discuss ho…

By drawing upon the concept of intersectionality, discuss how multiple aspects of identity can combine and impact upon childhood inequalities. (1500 words)

    Part A guidance

This TMA question asks you to draw on the concept of intersectionality to discuss how multiple aspects of identity can combine and impact upon childhood inequalities. The process word discuss in the title prompts you to pick the most important aspects, pointing out the strengths and limitations of different arguments.

You must highlight intersectionality, discussed in , and the ways that different aspects of identity (e.g. gender, race and disability) combine to impact inequalities.

When discussing how inequalities result from the combination of multiple aspects of children and young peoples identities, you may find it useful to consider different types of research evidence that contribute to knowledge about inequalities. For example, you may want to make links to how different forms of inequality and their impact can be studied using statistical measures (a form of quantitative research) of income and/or poverty indicators, in contrast to evidence that draws on interviews, personal reflections and children and young peoples voices (forms of qualitative research).

As this is a more extended essay question, you should take time to plan your answer, as this will help you to develop an introduction, conclusion and logical argument, which keep the focus on the question. You may find the workbook as well as the pre-recorded tutorial helpful in planning your answer.

We recommend that you attend an online tutorial, where tutors will cover key themes of the block, including advice on planning and writing assignments, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. If you are unable to attend a tutorial, you can watch a recording that will cover the content of the tutorial. You can view and book onto tutorials, and view recordings, in the area.

In addition, if you have specific questions about your assignment, you can also book to attend an optional E232 TMA Surgery (book via the area). This session allows you to ask specific questions that you have about the TMA. It will have a flexible format, led by the queries and questions that you raise rather than delivering a presentation about the TMA. This question-and-answer style surgery session does not replace tutorials, nor does it cover study skills such as referencing. Instead, it aims to provide an additional space to raise and discuss any prepared questions that you may have about the TMA. TMA surgery sessions will not be recorded.

Miller, Krosnick, and Fabrigar (2017) discuss issue salience in terms of the issue’s importance to individuals. “If an issue is salient to a person, he or she thinks frequently and deeply about it, gathers information about it to accumulate in long-term memory, and uses the issue as a basis for making voting decisions and charting other courses of political action.” This begs a few questions: When looking at politics and policy making, which is more consequential to people’s political behavior – personal importance of an issue or national importance of an issue? Why do you say this? Similarly, will a voter choose a candidate based on their assessment of the candidate’s ability on a national level or on their assessment of the candidate as a person? Why do you say this? Instructions Each of the questions above should result in a response that is at least one paragraph. Describe in your answers the basis for your response using this week’s instructional materials and video(s) to support your position. Cite and reference your sources in APA style.
