Group Models
Types of social work groups include treatment groupswhich are the primary focus of the courseand task groups. When you think of treatment groups, you may think of grief support, self-help such as Alcoholics Anonymous, or group therapy to change harmful behavior. Treatment groups serve many more purposes than these, including education and information sharing, socialization, and personal growth. Such groups have historically followed three primary modelsthe social goals model, the remedial model, and the reciprocal modeleach with a different role and focus for the social worker.
In this Discussion, you compare two of these models and consider theories that a social worker could apply with them.
To Prepare:
- Review the assigned chapters of the Toseland and Rivas text.
- Reflect on the remedial and reciprocal models of group work and which theories might align with each.
POST:
Compare the remedial and reciprocal models of group work. In your comparison, provide an example of each group. Then, identify and explain one theory you would use to approach each type of group as a social worker.

The Ethics of Practice Evaluation
As a social worker, you are required to follow certain ethical guidelines in the conducting of research, including evaluationnamely protecting research participants, obtaining informed consent, and ensuring confidentiality. But you must also consider the ethical obligation of evaluation itself. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) mandates that social workers engage in practice evaluation. But why? What is the purpose, and what are the professional and ethical obligations associated with evaluation?
In this Discussion, you answer these questions as you examine the ethics surrounding practice evaluation.
To Prepare
- Review the Learning Resources on evaluation and ethics.
- Reflect on practice evaluation, its purpose, and the professional and ethical reasons for a social worker to engage in practice evaluation.
SUBMIT
- Define practice evaluation.
- Explain how it differs from program evaluation.
- Explain why a social worker must evaluate their practice, even if they are already using evidence-based interventions with clients.
- If you were to conduct an evaluation with your chosen client from Week 1, describe at least one ethical standard that may pose a challenge and explain why. Refer to specific areas of the NASW Code of Ethics in your response. Be sure to include APA citations and references.

Senior capstone
Within the SLWK 499 course, students in groups of 3-4 will complete the following: The capstone groups will propose an initiative/project that demonstrates the summation of their professional training and commitment to social justice and anti-oppressive practices. For example, competency 4 is Engage in Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice. Capstone groups should share how their project/initiative is grounded in relevant practice informed research as well as how they intend to apply that research to inform their proposed action. This should include a proposed intervention or initiative on campus, at a local agency, or within a larger community context. Each group should explain how the proposed project/initiative addresses all nine competencies and related practice behaviors. Students should review the Council of Social Work Educations’ competencies and utilize them as a guide when considering appropriate projects and interventions. The capstone project should be presented in a collaborative digital presentation that each member of the groups will work on together. The presentation should include an overview of the project/initiative, why it is relevant/and or what problem it addresses, and how the proposed project/initiative meets or addresses each one of the competencies and practice behaviors. Group charters will be required for each capstone group. Below are some examples of social problems to consider as your groups work to develop a specific project or initiative. Feel free to use one of them or select an issue that is of particular interest to you/your group. Week 8 Activity: Skill Builder – Research for Advocacy: Connecting Social Work Research to Social Justice Action Overview The Skill Builder activity utilizes generative AI to walk through how you can use research to inform social work practice. The goal of this activity is to practice how research informs social work advocacy while applying the NASW Code of Ethics to a current social issue. You will translate scholarly research into accessible, action-oriented communication and practice creating professional-level advocacy materials. Instructions Review the provided scenario and assume the assigned role within the generative AI framework. Offer substantial suggestions while applying critical thinking during your interaction with the activity. Continue providing input until the activity concludes. Maintain a scholarly and professional communication style when engaging with Skill Builder. It is essential to avoid any use of aggressive or violent language, as doing so will prompt a warning and result in a restart of the activity. Grading The Skill Builder activity is auto-graded based on the full completion of the activity. Skill Builder is worth 100 points.
