    Accessing Information About Evidence-Based Practices

As a student, you have learned to look to the professional and scholarly literature to better understand concepts, support your analyses, and apply reputable, research-based evidence to a problem. The same is true of practicing social workers. Although they may already have a theoretical orientation and a set of interventions with which they are familiar, current research allows them to remain abreast of new developments and evidence-based practices and interventions that might work for a particular client, family, or group.

In this Assignment, you assume the role of a social worker assessing a client. In order to best treat that client, you must survey the research literature and analyze potential evidence-based interventions for treatment.

    To Prepare

    • Access the Social Work Case Studies media and navigate to Tiffani, Jake, and Paula. Choose one on which to focus your Assignment.
    • As you reflect on your chosen case, identify two issues that you would want to address as the social worker.
    • Research in the Walden Library for evidence-based practices that could be used to treat each issue. Ensure that you are searching for peer-reviewed scholarly research articles describing these practices.

    SUBMIT

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper in which you approach your chosen case as a social worker:

    • Describe two issues in your chosen case that would be important for intervention.
    • Identify one evidence-based intervention for each issue (from peer-reviewed journals). How do you know these interventions are evidence-based? Refer to the main characteristics of evidence-based practice (EBP) in your explanation.
    • Summarize the main information about the interventions from each journal articleresearch design, sample, sample size, and findings/outcomes in a 1-paragraph annotation.
    • Evaluate the interventions and their suitability to the case.

Use the Learning Resources and peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles to support your paper. Make sure to include appropriate APA citations and a reference list.

Skills and Competencies in Group and Family Therapy

Social work with a single client is individualized and has a specific and targeted focus. But what happens when you broaden that focus to include group therapy sessions with multiple clients, each with their own personality, issues, and coping mechanisms? Or family sessions that reveal complex and time-hardened dynamics? Your individual social work skills must flex and shift as you prepare to engage in group and family social work.

In this Discussion, you examine the nuanced skills and competencies necessary for group and family social work, the personal strengths you will draw on, and anticipated challenges.

      To Prepare

      • Review the Learning Resources on standards for social work practice with groups and on family therapy skills.
      • Reflect on the skills and competencies needed to engage in this work, the strengths you already have, and the challenges and rewards that this work may bring.

      POST

Post a description of the skills and competencies needed to be (a) an effective group social worker and (b) an effective family social worker. In what ways are these skills similar and different? Then, describe two to three strengths you bring to this work. Finally, identify two challenges you anticipate.

      • Guided Practice

Part 1 and Part 2 is a continuation of my previous guided practice which I will attach. Each Part is one page each.

Part 1. Continuing your work from the last guided practice:

        • Research on Interventions. What does the research on interventions suggest about your topic? What interventions have been studied? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence, the types of studies, and how good is the evidence? Sometimes there is a lack of empirical evidence-based practice information, in which case, you could mention this and borrow from research on similar problems and interventions. To what extent do the studies apply to your client/program?
        • Meta-analysis or systematic review. Use the specific guidelines provided in Blackboard to explain: (1) What strengths and weaknesses did you identify in the meta-analysis or systematic review (do NOT limit this to the limitations the author(s) list in the article)? (2) What field does the study come from (e.g., psychology, nursing, social work, etc.)? What are the implications of the field? (3) What guidelines/checklist did you use to determine if the meta-analysis or systematic review was of high quality? (4) Do you trust the findings? Why or why not? (5) Does the study apply to your client? How? (6) To what extent are issues of diversity, equity, power, and/or privilege addressed in the article? What are the implications of this inclusion (or lack thereof)?
        • Randomized controlled trial (RCT). Use the specific guidelines provided in Blackboard to explain: (1) What strengths and weaknesses did you identify in the RCT given your knowledge of what a good RCT looks like (do NOT limit this to the limitations the author(s) list in the article)? (2) What field does the study come from (e.g., psychology, nursing, social work, etc.)? What are the implications of the field? (3) What guidelines/checklist did you use to determine if the study was high quality? (4) Do you trust the findings? Why or why not? (5) Does the study apply to your client? How? (6) To what extent are issues of diversity, equity, power, and/or privilege addressed in the article/study? What are the implications of this inclusion (or lack thereof)?
        • Qualitative study. Use the specific guidelines provided in Blackboard to explain:
        • What strengths and weaknesses did you identify in the article review (do NOT limit this to the limitations the author(s) list in the article)?
        • What field did the study come from (e.g., psychology, nursing, social work, etc.)? What are the implications of the field?
        • What guidelines/checklist did you use to determine if the study was of high quality? Justify your conclusion that the study was high or low quality using specific criteria mentioned by the guidelines.
        • Do you trust the findings? Why or why not?
        • Does the study apply to your client? How?
        • To what extent are issues of diversity, equity, power, and/or privilege addressed in the article? What are the implications of this inclusion (or lack thereof)?
        • Integration. Critique past research for bias using an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens. Describe known outcomes from existing or past programs or services designed to address the problem stated above. Provide research-based information on at least 3 outcomes.
        • Based on the three main types of studies you have examined, bring the studies together and state how good do you think the evidence is overall? Taken together, to what extent do the studies apply to your client? Do you feel confident in applying the findings from these studies in working with your client? Why or why not? Part of this why should include evidence that the studies were high-quality and were conducted on clients with similar characteristics to your client.
        • You must integrate direct reference to and citations of the readings assigned for this week. Short quotes (one sentence or less) are acceptable, but should not be overused.

        Part 2.

        Program Evaluation Proposals only: Sampling

        • Provide a clear description of the sampling frame.
        • Identify an appropriate sampling strategy and process.
        • Provide a rationale for why you selected this sampling strategy
        • Identify the sampling strategys strengths and weakness
        • Describe to whom the results of your study would be generalizable based on your sampling plan.
        • Identify at least two sampling methods that have been used in previous studies related to your topic. Be sure to provide a scholarly citation. This should be a research article, book, or if using a website, a website ending in .gov or .edu.

Both SSD & Program Evaluation: Data Collection

        • Describe the planned data collection method(s)
        • Detail the rationale for the data collection method you selected, including its strengths and weaknesses.
        • Describe in detail the planned data collection procedures
        • Explain why those procedures were most appropriate for collecting the data you want.
        • Identify at least two published studies related to your topic that used the data collection methods you have selected and describe how they fit (or fail to fit) your participant(s) and topic.Provide an APA style citation (research article, book, .gov or .edu) for each study backing up the methods you chose.

You must integrate direct reference to and citations of the readings assigned for this week. Short quotes (one sentence or less) are acceptable, but should not be overused.

All information must come from scholarly research articles, books, or .edu or .gov websites.
