  • WEEK 5 DISCUSSION

The Role of Research in Promoting Social Justice

This week, we explored how research helps advance social justice and equity in the communities social workers serve. For this discussion, share ideas regarding research practices and/or tools and resources related to writing and research. Here are some ideas to get you started:

    • How can research help bring attention to a social justice issue you care about?
    • In what ways can research either empower or harm marginalized communities? Reflect on the responsibilities social workers have to conduct and share research in ways that uphold dignity, equity, and human rights.
    • Share what in this week’s content you found to be of most interest related to your social work practice, your professional development, and/or academic journey. How might you use this information?

For your first Critical Analysis Paper, I’d like you to present an argument about which theory/theories you believe are best to help explain the occurrence of violence and abuse in adulthood, drawing on the theoretical literature covered in class. This model may be represented by one or more theories. If one theory is utilized, be sure to provide a compelling argument as to why you think this one theory is sufficient. If multiple theories (or parts of theories) are utilized, be sure to explain how the theories work together. Provide a critique/limitations of your model as well.

  • Attachment theory

This is a 8-10 minute “script” for my masters level social work class. I am doing attachment theory. Please answer the questions for the podcast script. This is more of a conversational type podcast but still needs to be professional. Here are the instructions along with the rubric: Generalist Practice II Assignment #1 Theory Podcast Description: This podcast is a chance for you to take an in-depth look at a practice theory of interest to you that is commonly used in social work. In the podcast you should describe the theorys main principles and how the theory can be used to help in social work practice settings. Approach this as if you are teaching me (the reader) about the theory. Choose from this list of practice theories/models: Cognitive behavioral theory (CBT), ecological systems theory, crisis intervention theory, task centered perspective, psychosocial development theory, social learning theory, attachment theory, and family systems theory. It must be DIFFERENT from the theory you wrote about in the fall semester. 1.) What does the theory say? Describe the descriptive theory (what the theory proposes is the reasons for peoples problems) and the prescriptive theory (what they say you do to help and why they think it will help). This part is focused on teaching your reader about the theory. Included should be information on the key components that make up the theory, individuals who contributed to or influenced its development, and how (if at all) the therapeutic relationship is addressed. 2.) What does the research say? – Discuss what research says about the theory, including evidence that supports and critiques the theory. 3.) Discuss the theorys fit with the field of social work In class and some of our readings have touched on what makes a theory a good fit for social work. Discuss whether or not your chosen theory is a good fit with social work and why (support with research). 4.) Would you use this theory? Why or why not? Discuss whether or not you would use this theory in your practice now that you have explored the theory more in depth. Assignment Requirements: Prepare a podcast (8-10 minutes individually or 18-20 minutes in a pair) to present the information discussed above on your theory. You will submit the podcast and a reference list via Plato. The podcasts and reference lists will be shared with the class later in the semester. 1. Review and consider the application of the NASW Code of Ethics to the evaluation and termination phases of the social work practice framework.
    2. Reflect on your experiences with endings, interruptions, and transitions. Consider their implications by responding to the following sets of questions:
    3. Reflect on specific evaluation methods a social worker could use to measure the ongoing needs and program effectiveness for clients. What is one formal evaluation strategy that the social worker could use to evaluate progress made on specific treatment goals and ongoing needs? Why is evaluation a matter of ethical practice in this case?
    4. What come to mind when you think of endings, interruptions, and transitions? Some common examples may include finishing a school year and saying goodbye to teachers and classmates you liked, moving away for college, or finding out that a doctor you feel comfortable with is leaving practice. What positive and negative thoughts and feelings do you have about endings and how may they relate to clients experiences of endings in the change process? How might endings in your future social work practice bring up both the positive and negative emotions surrounding your memories? What is your plan to manage these emotions when you are terminating with clients?
    5. After reviewing the , section 1.17, consider the client population you hope to work with (Substance Use and Mental Health).
    6. What are some ethical considerations you have towards the termination process, and how do you plan to terminate with clients ethically?
    7. For example, how might you prepare clients for an upcoming leave of absence or termination? What are some examples of things you might say?
    8. As another example, how might you collaborate with a client to create a discharge plan that addresses her ongoing needs for safety?
    9. Incorporate concepts and demonstrate your understanding of the resources required for the assignment (journals, videos, texts, etc.) and use conventions of academic writing, including essay-style paragraphs (topic sentence, supporting sentences and summary or final statement), proper grammar, correct use of spelling and punctuation and use of currently required APA writing standards including formatting using indented paragraphs, same font throughout, proper headings, references at the bottom as needed and APA style, including proper use of in-text citations, concise language, paraphrasing and active voice in first or third person.
