    Assignment Details:

This assignment challenges students to develop and present an initial plan for implementing

an organizational change project within their practicum organization. The project should

address fundamental social work principles (i.e. cultural humility, social justice, anti-oppressive

practice, and trauma-informed care) while demonstrating an understanding of organizational

    change frameworks and practice skills.

This assignment requires students to present ideas

conciselyfor a maximum of 9 minutes, not exceeding 10 minutes. Slides should follow the

guidelines of having only 5 words per line and 5 lines per slide for good visual presentation.

Visuals are encouraged and more than 1 slide per topic is allowed (see below)

Five references are needed from the syllabus or content outside of class. The references can be

cited on each of the slides or as a stand-alone reference list at the end of the presentation.

The framework below supports the conceptual development of the presentation:

Slides 1 & 2: Identifying the Need for Organizational Change (1 minute)

Based on your practicum experience, identify an issue or area within the organization

that would benefit from change. This could involve improving organizational culture,

addressing gaps in service delivery, enhancing cultural humility, or fostering a more

    trauma-informed environment.

Briefly explain why this change is needed and how it alig aligns with ethical social work

practice and our commitment to social justice.

Slide 3 & 4: Integrating Micro-Level Interventions and Macro Considerations into Mezzo

    Planning (2 minutes)

Identify specific micro-level interventions you have employed in your practicum that

could be scaled up to address mezzo-level issues. For example, if you successfully

implemented a trauma-informed approach with individual clients, explore how to

integrate this approach into organizational policies or community programs.

Briefly discuss any identified macro-level policy issues you see impacting your

practicum, and connect the macro-level practice to the need for organizational change

(for example, considerations for asylum seekers).

Slides 5 &6: Justice Oriented Change (2 minutes)

Articulate how you anticipate your proposed organizational change will benefit the

organization and improve outcomes for individual clients or client groups (provide only 2

    reasons).

Consider how your project addresses power dynamics, privilege, or institutional racism.

Slide 7: Overcoming Barriers & Challenges (2 minutes)

Discuss potential barriers or challenges to implementing your organizational change

project. These could include resistance from staff, organizational policies, funding

    limitations, or power imbalances.

Utilizing skills discussed in class and from the readings, propose strategies for

overcoming these barriers, such as engaging in collaborative decision-making, promoting

    non-intrusive collaboration, or building mutual trust and respect with key stakeholders;

be specific and name two ways you would overcome barriers and challenges.

    Slide 8: Self-Care (2 minutes)

Describe how you will prioritize self-care while implementing the organizational change

project. Consider the organization’s self-care protocols and support provided to staff.

Consider how emotional stress, resistance to change, intersectionality, and power

dynamics might impact your well-being and ability to practice self-care.

  • Mapping

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to help you identify and analyze regions or populations that are at high risk for human trafficking. You will create a digital map that visually represents these vulnerabilities, supported by thorough research. This project will enable you to understand the geographic and demographic factors that contribute to trafficking risks, and apply your analytical skills to real-world data.

    Instructions:

    1) Choose a Focus:

    • Decide whether you want to focus on a specific region (e.g., a country, continent, or specific areas within a country) or a specific population group (e.g., children, migrant workers, LGBTQ+ individuals) that is at high risk of human trafficking.
    • Your focus should be clearly defined and supported by available data and research.

    2) Conduct Research:

    • Gather data and information from credible sources such as international organizations (e.g., UN, ILO, UNICEF), government reports, academic articles, and reputable NGOs.
    • Your research should include:
    • Geographic Data: Information about the region(s) where trafficking is prevalent, including any specific hotspots or vulnerable areas.
    • Demographic Data: Characteristics of the population(s) at risk, including factors such as age, gender, socioeconomic status, migration status, and other vulnerabilities.
    • Contributing Factors: Analysis of the social, economic, political, and environmental factors that contribute to the risk of trafficking in the selected region or population.

    3) Create the Digital Map:

    • Using a digital mapping tool (such as Google My Maps, Canva, or any other preferred tool), create a visual representation of the data you have gathered.
    • Your map should include:
    • Geographic Markers: Identify key regions, countries, or specific areas where trafficking risks are high.
    • Demographic Indicators: Use symbols, colors, or layers to represent different population groups and their specific vulnerabilities.
    • Annotations: Provide brief annotations or labels that explain why each marked area or population is at high risk. These annotations should be concise but informative, summarizing your research findings.
    • Sources: Include a legend or side panel that lists the sources of your data and any relevant statistics.

    4) Write an Accompanying Report:

    • Alongside your digital map, write a brief (no more than 2 pages – use citations as needed) summary that explains your map.
    • Structure your summary as follows:
    • Introduction:
    • Briefly introduce the focus of your project (region or population) and the importance of understanding trafficking vulnerabilities in this context.
    • Analysis of Geographic and Demographic Data:
    • Explain the key geographic and demographic factors that contribute to trafficking risks in the areas or among the populations highlighted on your map.
    • Contributing Factors:
    • Discuss the social, economic, political, and environmental factors that increase the risk of trafficking in your chosen focus area.
    • Conclusion:
    • Summarize your findings and reflect on the implications for policy, prevention, and intervention efforts.

    5) Cite Your Sources:

    • Include in-text citations throughout your summary and provide a complete reference list at the end, formatted in APA style.
    • Ensure that your map annotations and report are supported by a minimum of five credible sources.

    6) Submission Guidelines:

    • Submit your digital map as a shareable link (if using an online tool) or as an attached file (e.g., PNG, JPEG, or PDF) along with your written summary as a Word document or PDF.
    • Both the map and the summary will be submitted under Module 5

  • Should Older Adults Be Protected from Bad Choices?

During this module, we discussed the controversial question of whether and to what extent older adults should be protected from “bad choices”. Some would argue that older adults should be free to make their own choices regardless of the consequences. Others would argue the opposite considering that society (i.e., Medicare) often bears to cost of “bad choices” (such as hospitalizations due to falls).

With regard to cognitive impairment, at what point should older adults’ freedom to make choices be taken away?

Can (and, in some cases, should) we take away the freedom to make choices in certain domains while preserving choice in other domains? Can you provide examples?

  • Capstone paper assignement – Incarceration – Social Problem

Capstone Paper Assignment In the second semester of specialized/advanced practice, as students approach graduation, all WSSW students must complete a Capstone Paper. This paper represents the culminating assignment for the Social Work Program. It requires students to complete an individual paper with an emphasis on integrating their knowledge of all key areas of the MSW curriculum: HBSE, Cultural Diversity, Values & Ethics, Policy, Research and Practice with client systems. This approximately 10-12-page final paper should address a social problem experienced by a client, group or community and explain how policy, cultural diversity, HBSE, ethics, research, and practice knowledge would inform your assessment and intervention with this problem. For example, if a student chose to write about substance abuse and adolescents, they would include relevant social work knowledge from HBSE, Policy, Cultural Diversity, Values/Ethics, Research and Practice courses. Incorporate illustrations from your Field Education experience. In this way, each student will be able to demonstrate their critical reflection and integration of MSW core competencies around a particular social issue. Students have discretion over their choice of topic. Examples can be wide-ranging*: Mental health issues in a client, group or particular community Trauma in an individual, group or community Policy and program evaluation in an area of social work; substance abuse, gerontology, LGBT Systemic racism impacting a client, group or larger cohort *Your selected topic should be approved by your practice professor to ensure appropriateness. Additionally, your professor may ask for an outline and preliminary draft prior to the Capstone due date. This will serve as the final Specialized/Advanced Practice paper. Outline for the Capstone Paper I. Title page A. Please follow APA style when constructing the title page (i.e., title, your name and affiliation, running head and page number). II. Abstract A. Present a succinct summary (150 words or less) of your Capstone paper III. Introduction A. Identify and introduce your topic 1. Identify the way in which you will organize and explicate this topic in your paper IV. Literature Review A. The literature review for your study should include a minimum of 8 primary sources that are related to your chosen topic. The majority of these sources should come from peer-reviewed journals; Identify and provide the historical and current context of your chosen topic Who has studied this topic and from how many different points of view? You need to include all 6 areas. Research Policy issues Values and Ethics issues Cultural Diversity issues HBSE framework Practice frameworks/interventions V. Integration of Field Education Learning A. Case example analysis (client, group, cohort) B. How did these different areas of your MSW education inform your understanding of this case and topic? VI. Discussion How has this paper deepened your understanding of this topic? Looking back on your MSW education, what shifts do you detect in yourself, and your approach as a professional MSW? Conclusion Summarize key findings and conceptual takeaways. References The Capstone is a scholarly paper written in the American Psychological Association (APA) style. An exceptional paper will show an integrated and complete understanding of the topic selected by the student. And how key areas of the MSW curriculum deepen ones understanding of this chosen topic. The best papers are well structured and carefully focused. This final capstone paper should contain correct spelling and grammar; have a clear beginning, middle, and end and each new topic should have a subheading. Any statements of facts or material used for this paper must be APA referenced (7th).
