  • Exploring Neurodevelopment disorders

This week in the mental health text we read chapters 12 and 13 about neurodevelopmental disorders, and disruptive and conduct disorders. For this discussion, you will use all of chapter 13, and select three disorders/disabilities from chapter 12 (other than ADHD) that you did not know much about. For each of the disorders/disabilities discuss the behaviors that may be seen with the selected disorders/disabilities. Include the numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) in your discussion of each.

    1. Identify the disorder/disability with a brief introduction to it.
    2. Discuss a few characteristics of each.
    3. Select and discuss at least 3 behaviors and symptoms that you may see with the disorder/disability,
    4. Select and discuss at least 3 classroom strategies and interventions that teachers may use to teach and support students with the disorder/disability related to the behaviors.
    5. Provide a closing statement of how what you learned about each disorder/disability and how you will use what you learned in your work with students with the selected disorder/disability.

You may do numbers 1-5 above in a chart, table, other visual, or an easy-to-read narrative discussion. It is very important that your work for each disorder/disability be clear and easy to read. You may start #s 1-5 in your initial post by Wednesday night, and add to it throughout the week. Item #5 should be rather detailed supporting with evidence, what you learned and how you will use it. All items should be supported with scholarly evidence from this weeks readings and media.

  • ADHD IN THE CLASSROOM

    6.1 ADHD in the Classroom

Consider what you learned this week about ADHD as a high incidence neurodevelopmental disorder that is very common today. Describe how a preschooler with ADHD might behave and what challenging behaviors a classroom teacher may see with a student in this age group. How is this different from what might be seen in an elementary age child with ADHD, and a high school student with ADHD? Make sure to describe what behaviors you would see in a student at each of these age levels. What are some of the common comorbid conditions that might occur with ADHD that teachers may encounter in their students? Describe the effects the comorbid conditions have on the child in the classroom. Support your responses with scholarly evidence from class.

It is very important that teachers never take on the role of medical doctor and diagnose students with ADHD, even by hinting that a student may have ADHD or he sure needs meds. Medication is a controversial issue with ADHD treatment and teachers are not qualified to diagnose disorders or prescribe medications. Consider your thoughts, behaviors, and things you have said in the past about challenging students. Have you ever thought or said anything related to the comments above (you dont have to share your answer)? What can you do to provide objective factual information parents, or doctors may find useful, rather than subjective assumptions, myths, and/or opinions about challenging students?
