  • Journal Synthesis Assignment

    Assignment Requirements

Research Topic Selection Choose ONE research topic from the following options:

    • Differentiation for Students with Significant Learning Needs
    • Differentiation at the Secondary Level
    • Assessments and Differentiation
    • Cultural and Racial Issues Affecting Differentiation
    • Leadership and the Role it Plays in Differentiated Curriculum
    • Promising Practices for Student Differences and Academic Achievement
    • Differentiating Content, Process, Product, and Learning Environment

    Core Components

    1. Scholarly Source Integration (2-3 Articles) Locate and analyze 2-3 peer-reviewed articles from professional education journals published within the last 10 years. Focus on rigorous research that directly addresses your chosen topic. Acceptable sources include journals such as Teaching Exceptional Children, Journal of Special Education, Remedial and Special Education, Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, Educational Leadership, and Contemporary Educational Psychology.

    2. Thematic Analysis and Synthesis Identify common themes across your selected articles and analyze where researchers agree or diverge in their findings. Demonstrate how different studies build upon, challenge, or complement each other. Your role is to synthesize research findings rather than summarize individual articles or present personal opinions.

    3. Disability Identity Lens Application Examine your research findings through six disability identity themes:

    • Communal Attachment: How do practices support connections with peers and community?
    • Affirmation of Disability: Do approaches promote full citizenship and inclusion?
    • Self-Worth: How do strategies affirm student value and capability?
    • Pride: Do methods encourage students to embrace their identity?
    • Discrimination Awareness: How do researchers address bias and systemic barriers?
    • Personal Meaning: Do approaches help students find purpose in their experiences?

    4. Professional Writing Standards Use flawless APA formatting for citations and references, maintain clear scholarly writing that synthesizes rather than summarizes, and ensure error-free grammar and mechanics throughout your paper.

    Research Strategy Guidelines

Database Recommendations: Begin your search using education databases such as ERIC, PsycINFO, or Education Source. Look for recent meta-analyses or systematic reviews that provide comprehensive overviews of your topic.

Source Evaluation: Ensure sources represent peer-reviewed research from recognized professional organizations. Exclude popular magazines, non-peer-reviewed websites, undergraduate papers, and opinion pieces without research foundations.

Writing Approach: Focus on letting the research findings guide your synthesis. Look for patterns, contradictions, and gaps in the literature while using transition sentences to demonstrate relationships between studies. Maintain a scholarly tone throughout and reserve personal opinions for brief introduction or conclusion sections only.

    Quality Indicators

Your synthesis should demonstrate deep understanding of research findings, sophisticated analysis of researcher agreements and disagreements, thoughtful and specific application of the disability identity lens, and consistent scholarly tone. The goal is to illuminate important insights about differentiation practices through rigorous analysis of current literature.

  • Assessment process from RtI to testing to IEP goals

Write a paper describing the assessment process from RtI to testing to IEP goals. This assignment requires access to and use of the records (i.e., cumulative folder, psychological report, and current IEP). If you do not have this access, use a provided case study. Using the information from the students cumulative folder, psychological report, current IEP, or case study, address the prompts below in your paper. If you can’t find data for a heading then you must hypothesize data that supports your conclusions. Use each point below as a heading: Describe the child and their needs (age, grade, living situation, behavioral, cognitive, learning, and social). Describe in detail how parents were or were not involved in the process. Describe the MTSS process of how the teacher collected data. Include RTI data if available. Describe the school psychologists assessment plan. If available, provide evidence (such as reliable and valid instruments, testing in native language, bilingual testing, following standardized testing procedures, and certified or licensed providers) of how they minimized testing bias. What areas were assessed (academic, cognitive, social-emotional)? Summarize results. Describe evidence that supported the child had a disability(ies). Based on the information gathered, did the assessment process inform planning for the childs IEP? Describe in detail how the childs current IEP goals relate to the assessment data. E,g., if testing showed reading weaknesses, were there IEP reading goals? If you were to update the childs testing, provide a detailed rationale for one or more areas you recommend be assessed and why? Suggested assessment areas (social, behavioral, academic, cognitive, processing, etc.). Based on the information gathered, write 2 new measurable annual goals containing condition, behavior, and criteria, for each area on the childs current IEP. You may use this case study for your assignment: Assessment Case Study: Bart Simpson – LD Report (Redacted) [PDF] (The School District of Springfield Exceptional Student Education, 2020) Assessment Case Study: Bart Simpson – SLD Case IEP Matrix Progress Report (Redacted) [PDF] (The School District of Springfield Exceptional Student Education, 2019)

    Assessment Rubric:

Paper is typed, doublespaced, utilize Times New Roman font, and 1 margins; title page, in-text citations, reference (page), and headings strictly adhere to the most recent APA guidelines; and/or contains no more than 1 writing error per page.

Submission identifies current IEP goals and describes one or more evidences of how they related to previous assessment data; provides detailed rationale of future assessment area(s) needed; writes two annual goals containing condition, behavior, criteria, for each area on the childs current IEP.

Submission describes the assessment plan used including data supporting minimizing test bias such reliable and valid instruments, testing in native language, bilingual testing, following standardized testing procedures, and certified or licensed providers. The submission cites three or more areas assessed (cognitive, processing, academic, social, behavioral) and provides a chart summary of data. Submission cites clear evidence the child met eligibility criteria for a disability.

Submission comprehensively describes the schools MTSS process for all students. The submission includes four or more evidences of the childs MTSS process such as planning information, intervention descriptions, RtI charts, trend lines, aim lines, curriculum based instruction data, frequency counts, graphical data, evidence for decision making regarding lack of progress.

Submission clearly describes at least three categories of the childs needs (living situation, behavioral, cognitive, learning, and social). and cites evidences of parent participation and consent or personnel attempt(s) to involve nonparticipatory parent.

    Instuctions:

Each prompt should be addressed in a narrative format Each prompt should be a minimum of 2-3 double-spaced paragraphs response. Your paper should utilize a pseudonym for the student, Be sure to exclude identifying information Adhere to the current APA Edition for: Structure of Page Section Headers (Levels) Citations and References. See the attached rubric for grading details. This assignment will close by the specified due date and time in Canvas and the syllabus. Late submissions will not be possible. • ethical decision making and advocacy

Respond to the reflection options below, using this scenario as your anchor.

A student with an IEP is not making expected progress toward their goals. During a team conversation, there is disagreement about whether the student needs additional support. An administrator expresses concern about staffing and scheduling, while a general education teacher believes current supports are sufficient. The parent has asked for reassurance that their childs needs are being addressed.

Option A: If you are currently in the classroom or have teaching experience

Using the scenario as a reference point, reflect on whether you have seen a similar situation in practice. Explain:

    • What felt familiar or realistic about the scenario
    • How the situation you observed was handled compared to how you think it should be handled
    • One insight this comparison gives you about the ethical role of the case manager
  • Belonging Reflection Tool

Complete the worksheet. You will use the to complete this. Think about your experiences in the classroom up to this point and how you can use the information you have learned to enhance the feeling of meaningful belonging for the students that you serve.

    • Assignment Description: Students will collaboratively reflect with members of the school and community about the ten dimensions of belonging. Students will identify what is being done well and what could be done better for each dimension.

  • Part 2A: Synthesis of Literature Related to Problem

    Part 2: Define the Problem

The purpose of this section is to develop a well-defined problem that is based on the evidence you analyzed in Part 1 and informed by current literature. After reviewing qualitative and quantitative information from Part 1, you may have identified several gaps or areas for growth. A primary factor for consideration as you define which gap or area for growth you will select as the focus of the SRP is the current literature on similar or related problems. Thus, you will begin this section with a brief review of the related literature on one gap or area for growth you are interested in investigating. Then, after synthesizing the literature you reviewed, you will formulate a clear, well-defined problem statement that is grounded in both the data you collected in Part 1 and the current literature.

Note: All Parts have indicated page lengths and number of scholarly resources; however, this does not mean this is the total minimal amount. All students must make sure the entire content is covered at the doctoral level with the number of scholarly sources to validate and synthesize the content. In addition, to proceed from Part to Part while making progress, all students must be in good academic standing.

Review the SRP current template for additional guidelines regarding the requirement of page length and number of scholarly current sources for this Part.

    1. Synthesis of Literature related to Problem (Complete/Incomplete)

For this section, you will review a minimum of five scholarly articles related to one of the gaps or area for growth you identified in Part 1. Your review of the literature should include recent studies investigating potential interventions in similar or related settings as well as seminal studies. The final product for this section will be a narrative that synthesizes your findings after reviewing the literature. The narrative should at the minimum include the following components:

    (a) a discussion of research methods,

    (b) a discussion of any pertinent models, frameworks, or theories, e.g., systems theory and change theory and their relevance to your study, and

    (c) a summary of the findings and outcomes from the studies you reviewed.

    This is Part 2A:
