  • Student expression rights

Prompt You may use a real scenario from your own experiences, or the scenario described below to guide your submission into the discussion board this week. If you have experience in dealing with a decision to restrict or not to restrict student dress, student appearance, or other forms of student expression, you are welcome to comment on that experience rather than the scenario provided. Refer to the student handbook at your school or to local district policy or to district administrative guidelines to respond to the scenario below. Keep in mind all guidance that we have studied in this course from various sources. How should a school leader respond to the scenario described below or to a similar scenario that may have occurred on your campus? Succinctly outline the questions you might ask, the steps you would take, and any other salient details. If you use your own experience, be sure not to use names and ensure that no one can be identified through your comments. STUDENT EXPRESSION RIGHTS: SCENARIO: A group of students have begun wearing bracelets to your school that carry the message, I “heart” boobies. The bracelets are sold by the American Cancer Society as a fundraiser. The American Cancer Society is active in your community and several of the prominent families in the community have lost loved ones to breast cancer recently. You are aware that the bracelets have begun to cause disruptions in the classroom as reported by teachers and documented by discipline referrals and at least two fights between students have been directly attributable to the wearing or possession of the bracelets. TASK: Summarize the steps that should be taken at the school. Your submission should be a maximum of four paragraphs. You are responsible to cite appropriate policy, laws, or court decisions to support actions shared in your submission. Submit the posting by Thursday and post comments on at least two other student postings by Sunday.
