CASE PRESENTATION PAPER: CASE CONCEPTUALIZATION ASSIGNMENT

INSTRUCTIONS

The case presentation assignments will be in oral and written formats across the Practicum and

Internship classes. So far in your courses, you have only focused on certain aspects of the case

presentation (e.g., assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, case conceptualization, etc.) This

assignment will pull it all together while preparing you for the deeper levels of case

conceptualization which will be expected in your internship classes. Your written paper should

be 9 -14 pages not including title or reference pages, double-spaced (except in the treatment plan

chart), and follow APA professional guidelines format. You should have at least five (5)

academic sources, specifically in the diagnosis, theoretical conceptualization, treatment planning,

and integration sections. Please be concise yet thorough in covering the information requested.

Overview

You will have two Case Presentation Assignments in your Internship class. Your first presentation focuses on basic counseling skills. The second presentation will focus on case conceptualization and treatment planning. Both assignments require a Paper, a Session Video uploaded to Kaltura, and a corresponding Verbatim.

Instructions

The first presentation assignment focuses on basic counseling skills. This assignment contains three parts:

A paper which addresses the points listed in bold below (to be submitted to Canvas)

A session video uploaded to Kaltura (see instructions in the Class Introduction Discussion)

A Verbatim of the 10-minute portion of the session selected (to be submitted to Canvas).

Grading Criteria

The paper is 6-8 pages of content in length, not including the title page. At least 4 academic sources must be utilized. APA headings are applied effectively, and title page, etc., are mastered. At least 1 citation per paragraph is present.

The reflection paper assignments are papers that will range in length from 4-5 pages and will

focus on a topic that is of interest to you in the field of substance abuse. These papers are

opinion-based, however you must back up your arguments with some evidence from at least 2

additional sources found on the MSU Libraries Website. Please note that Wikipedia is not an

acceptable source. You may choose your own topic, but if you are struggling to find one, I have

included a list of possible topics for you to choose from below.

Students will type papers using 12 point, Times New Roman Font, have a cover page and double

space the assignment. When writing your paper and citing references, the utilization of APA

format will be expected. The cover page and accompanying works cited page does not count in

your page total.

1. Opioid Substance Use Disorder

2. Federal Drug Scheduling

3. Legalization of Marijuana

4. Federal Regulation of Prescription Drugs.

5. Drug Treatment Models- Harm Reduction Model.

6. Micro-dosing using Hallucinogens to help with PTSD and/or Depression

7. The use of Ketamine in the treatment of Depression.

**These are just some ideas…feel free to choose any topic that interests you related to Substance

Use.

Discussion Thread: Case Conceptualization and Diagnosis

Read the attached case study

and then do/discuss the following:

1. Conduct a functional analysis (this video may be helpful:

) use this opportunity to explore the substance use websites that have a plethora of resources for clinicians

2. How do you see the client’s issues coming together and impacting one another?

3. What is the diagnostic impression using the following organization:

a.) Identify the diagnosis with appropriate codes and specifiers

b.) What are at least two differential diagnoses you considered? why did you rule these out?

c.) What are the appropriate z-codes?

Discussion Thread: Screening and Assessment

For this discussion you will view the case vignette linked here and then answer the following questions:

1. What additional information would you want in order to have a full client history? What questions would you ask? (keeping in mind the bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework)

2. What screening and assessment instruments would be appropriate for use with this case? Identify at least two evidence based assessment/screening tools.

3. Write a paragraph describing the presenting problem including a problem list. This list should be in order of importance from most important to least important.
