Consider two popular songs, Bob Dylan’s “With God On Our Side” and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.”. Both songs were released in response to a military conflict (Dylan’s song was released in 1964 during the Vietnam War, and Greenwood’s received heavy airplay during the first Gulf War and in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks). Both songs also evoke divinity yet are very different in tone, lyrical content, and musical language.

The coexistence of over-abundance and food insecurity is mainly due to unequal access to resources. While there is enough food available, not everyone can afford or access healthy options. Nutritious foods are often more expensive and less available in some areas, while cheap, processed foods are widely accessible, leading to over-nourishment in some groups.
Income inequality, limited transportation, and time constraints also make it harder for some people to get healthy food, even when it exists. As a result, some people have too much low-quality food, while others do not have enough at all

The concept of the Tragedy of the Commons was recognized in the 1800s but it was introduced to the public discussion of environmental science by the evolutionary biologist Garrett Hardin in 1968. Your text book discusses the concept on pages 23-24. Below are a few other links.

Your assignment is to identify, explain, and discuss an example of the Tragedy of the Commons specifically focused on the topics in agricultural production and activity. I know you can Google ‘tragedy of the commons examples’ and in a few minutes, have dozens of examples. Resist that temptation. The examples an internet search will find are relevant but also old and over-used. They also may give you the mistaken impression that the Tragedy of the Commons is something big and out there, not something that shows up in your everyday lives in ways large and small.
