Formal Analysis Essay Guidelines
Purpose
The purpose of this essay is to practice analyzing a work of art by using the formal (visual) vocabulary learned in previous modules. This assignment was designed so that you can apply your knowledge of visual analysis. Begin by describing the visual elements and design principles (how does it look?), the form of the work (what is it?), and then consider the artwork’s subject matter (what does it depict?).
Understanding how to answer each of these questions is important to understanding the entire context of a work of art. The second essay (the Research Essay) will consider the meaning, history, and context of the artwork. You do not have to consider those items here. This is only about the visual elements and the subject matter of the artwork.

Also include a brief description of the subject matter. Remember you do not need to explain the artwork’s history, context, culture, etc. You are only focusing on the way the artwork looks.
