7-2 Final Project: Report
CHM 101 Final Project Guidelines and Rubric Overview The final project for this course is the creation of a report that discusses a chemical compound of your choice. You must select a compound through brainstorming with your class peers and with approval of your instructor. You must provide your motivation for choosing the compound, information about the compound, and at least one reaction involved in its production or use. You must also apply ideas learned throughout the course to provide insights about the properties and uses of the compound. The project is divided into two milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Three and Five. The final submission will occur in Module Seven. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes: * Describe energy flow, both kinetic and potential, in chemical systems * Identify states of matter * Explain chemical changes and bonding in relation to molecular behavior and energy * Classify matter, elements, compounds, and energy * Describe the properties of matter, including mass, solubility, and density Prompt In the final project, you will create a report about a compound that is of interest to you and explain the importance, properties, production, and other aspects of the compound. Ideally, you will choose a topic of interest drawn from your own real-life experiences. Include relevant tables and charts either in-text or as appendices. You must collect information about the compound from citable sources and complete the following: * Identify your motivation for choosing this compound (importance in a particular career, curiosity about an everyday compound, etc.) * Provide information about the physical properties of the compound * Provide information about the cost, extent of production, and use * Provide information about at least one chemical reaction involved in the production or use of the compound (type of reaction, heat of reaction, catalysts, safety considerations, etc.) * Include an analysis and interpretation of at least three aspects of this compound and/or its reactions with specific references to the class resources Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed: * Introduction: * Include your choice of compound and why it was chosen. * Make a connection to your experiences. * Include a preview of what you hope to convey to the reader (this will include showing how the concepts in the class help you understand the information). * Compound Description: * Physical descriptionState of the compound and identifying characteristics. * Molecular descriptionProvide molecular weight, constituent elements, types of bonding, and polarity. * Properties descriptionProvide relevant properties such as solubility, density, state, and boiling/melting point. * UsageDescribe the usage including relevant energy flows. * Economic importanceInclude at least three years of recent information on the production and cost of the compound and indicate any trends. * Reaction Description: In this section, you will describe a reaction related to the production or use of the compound you have chosen. You must include the following: * Type of reactionDescribe the general class of reaction (combustion, acid/base, redox, etc.). * Heat of reactionProvide the amount of heat that must be added or removed from this reaction at the relevant temperature and whether this reaction is exothermic or endothermic. * All products, reactants, and catalysts Include a balanced equation with all states of participants. * Special considerationsDocument the safe operating range of this reaction, safety considerations, and side reactions that may produce unwanted products. * Summary of other possible reactions Provide either another reaction to produce the compound or an alternate use and its reaction. * Class Connection: Using some of the ideas from the class resources and textbook, make quantitative/qualitative comparisons of the compound and/or the related reaction described earlier. These comparisons can be to different compounds/reactions or to the same compound/reaction at a different condition. Include references to the specific class week/resource or textbook section/chapter as appropriate. The following comparisons must be included: * Difference in stateHow does the compounds use change in a different physical state or when mixed with other compounds at different concentrations? * Difference in the reactivity of the compound with the reactivity of a similar compoundDoes more or less reactivity change the way in which it is used? * Change in the heat of reactionDiscuss the effects of changing the reaction temperature; for example, would the change make it unsafe, too slow, unstable, etc.? * Difference in the molecular weight of this compound compared to similar compoundsHow does this difference affect properties (e.g., solubility) to change the range of uses? * Conclusion: Summarize the key aspects of the properties/insights based on the content of your paper. Milestones Milestone One: Introduction ATTACHED(Section I) In Module Three, you will submit a draft of the Introduction (Section I) for instructor approval and feedback. Your draft should include all of the critical elements as listed above for the Introduction. Your introduction should be between 12 and 1 page in length. This milestone is graded with the Milestone One Rubric. Milestone Two: Compound Description, Reaction Description, Class Connection (Sections II, III, and IV) ATTACHED In Module Five, you will submit a draft of the Compound Description (Section II), Reaction Description (Section III), and Class Connection (Section IV) of the critical elements as listed above. The submission should be 4 pages in length (3 pages if tables and figures are omitted). This milestone is graded with the Milestone Two Rubric. Final Submission: Report In Module Seven, you will submit your report. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded using the Final Product Rubric. What to Submit Your report should be at least 5 pages (plus a cover page and references). This total includes tables and figures, but there should be a minimum of 4 pages if tables and figures are omitted. Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. References should be cited in APA format. -

ethics and community
What Would You Do? Ethical Decision-Making Scenario
- Assignment 1 Scenario
- You are a criminal justice professional working evening shift in a midsized community. During your shift, you are assigned to respond to a call involving a minor but emotionally charged incident that presents multiple ethical considerations.
- You are dispatched to a neighborhood where a store owner has called to report a suspected theft involving a young adult. Upon arrival, you learn that the individual attempted to leave the store without paying for a low-cost item. The individual did not attempt to flee, cooperated immediately when confronted, and returned the item without resistance. The store owner is frustrated and insists that charges be filed, stating that similar incidents have occurred in the area and that they want to send a message.
- During your interaction, the individual appears anxious and distressed. They explain that they recently lost their job and were attempting to obtain a basic necessity. The individual has no prior criminal history and provides identification. English is not their first language, and communication is slow but respectful. You notice that the individual avoids eye contact and speaks quietly, which the store owner interprets as dishonesty.
- Department policy allows you discretion in handling minor offenses. You may issue a citation, make an arrest, refer the individual to a diversion or community-based program, or resolve the matter informally. At the same time, you are aware that your department has emphasized reducing repeat calls for service from local businesses and maintaining strong community relations. You also know that supervisors closely review discretionary decisions, particularly those involving public complaints.
- As you consider how to proceed, you recognize that this situation involves competing interests, including legal authority, ethical responsibility, individual rights, cultural considerations, organizational expectations, and community trust. Your decision will affect the individual involved, the business owner, public perception of fairness, and your professional accountability.
- Student Prompt
- Using the concepts from the assigned course articles, prepare a What Would You Do? ethical decision-making report addressing the following:

FS HED 201
PART 1
Overview
The “Current Events in Public Health” assignments are designed to help integrate the concepts in each module and then relate them to public health current events. This week the topic is: The distribution, or the HOW MUCH, WHO & WHERE of the problem.
It helps to meet:
Course Objective 6: Demonstrate the use of basic epidemiological methods, such as the analysis of rates, and the definition of cases, population at risk, risk factors, incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality
Course Objective 2: Identify different public health disciplines, professions and organizations, and explain how each contributes to the field of public health.
You will read and summarize an article and provide a personal viewpoint. Then you will practice looking for epidemiologic information or how the problem is distributed. Your work should give us a “snapshot” of who the problem impacts.
Key Takeaways:
*Epidemiology looks at the who, where and how many of health problems. This is the distribution.
*It is the epidemiologists job to use numbers (biostatistics) and patters to best describe those at risk for certain health problems.
Concept Review: Prevalence
Review our terms unit: Prevalence is the number of cases of a disease, infected people or people with some other attribute present during a particular interval of time. It often is expressed as a rate. Prevalence is a simple way to express the amount of disease and a key point to include.
In easy terms, Prevalence is the measure of how common a disease or condition is in a group of people over a certain period of time. Numbers help us understand the amount of the problem. Prevalence helps us understand how many people are affected during that time.
Readings
Article 1 . (,You will do the distribution of high blood pressure, not your chosen topic.)
Assignment Steps
- Read the material and write a 3-5 sentence summary.
- Do some more research. Tell us WHO the problem impacts most and a little about them. Find more data that supports your topic.
- Include the current data on prevalence, gender, age, and race as your demographics/distribution. We will do social factors next so do not include it here.
- For the reflection paragraph add a personal viewpoint. A personal viewpoint is an opinion, not someone else’s words. Suggestions are “I wonder..” “I believe..” “This impacts me because..” type statements. Please don’t just state the obvious!
- For the bibliography, cite the article you read and then you must have at least two sources. (the main article and one more that supports your claim)
- Follow my format! You must have the bold categories and simple statements like my example for full credit.
Example
I read an article on the use of telehealth in the treatment of opioid addiction. With so much technology, using telehealth has proven to be a novel and cost-effective way to address opioid use. Patients that used telehealth had significantly better recovery rates (1).
Prevalence: The opioid epidemic is far reaching with 16 million users worldwide and 2.1 million in the US alone (2).
Age: Although problems are widespread, the peak age for treatment is 25-35 (2).
Gender: Men, however, have an overdose death rate of 2.3x greater than women (3).
Race: Racially, whites have about 2x the death rate of Blacks and Hispanics combined (3).
Opioid statistics challenge our expectations of “drug addicts” as inner city minorities. I think people assume drug use is an urban problem and minorities. My kids carry Narcan because we know that experimenting teens have also been impacted by drug exploration. It is naive to think that our communities are not at risk.

PART 3-
DiscussionWeek 3: Discussion
For this week’s discussion, we will be sharing images of Chicanx art that have elements and iconography from precolumbian Mesoamerican art. Please make sure to read the slides prior to completing this discussion and see extra resources in this week’s module. I am extending the due date for this discussion to Initial Post due by Friday to give you more time to search for artwork and relate it to this week’s content. Please follow these guidelines for discussion:
- Choose one piece of Chicanx art and embed the image(please embed and don’t link, posts without image embedded will not be given points, linking makes everyone download to see it, see my announcement from Week 1 about this and see orientation module to learn how to embed image, you should see it sitting in your post, not the link or attachment. It doesn’t have to be a famous artist, it could be a local artist, could be murals, or lowrider artwork (Remember to embed click the little icon of a pic and choose image, then you can resize by clicking image if you like.)
- Write an analysis of the artwork and explain how it is influenced by Pre-Columbian art. Some things to think about could include iconography, designs/patterns, historical figures or events. (should be at least 50 words, hopefully more… click “tools” on menu to get word count).
- Include the name of artwork in quotes, artist name, year created, and medium…if possible.
PART 4
Week 3 Reflection: Portraits and Representation
Who artists choose to represent in their art and how they choose to do so can hold significant power. A person can be uplifted through artistic representation or insulted and brought down. A fictional character represented in art can tell a story, share a lesson, or serve as representation of a real individual/group and their experience. The artists we learned about this week have used clay to create representations of others (real or fictional). Select at least two of the works we took a look at in this week’s lecture and write a 500-word-long reflection considering how representations of individuals might be uplifting or destructive. Who is affected by these outcomes and how? How do the artists weve looked at use their art practice to guide our interpretations of their works?
Guidelines:
To earn full credit:
- Pick at least two of the works we took a look at in this week’s lecture. Share the artists name and the title of the work.
- Share an analysis of how representation plays a role in both works. How are these two works similar or different?
- Write a response that addresses the prompt and is at least 500 words
- Submit before the due date and time
