  • Policy proposal

Policy proposal about human rights violations in El Salvador prisons

Should meet the 1500-word minimum requirement, which is approximately 6 pages double-spaced, but please use the word count feature of your word processing program to ensure that you have met this minimum requirement. Drafts should carefully cite (in-text citations or footnotes) all sources that were used in writing the draft. Drafts should be submitted anonymously (do not include your name) to the Canvas board to allow for a double-blind review. (The classmates who review your project will not know who you are, and you will not know who your reviewers are.) For full points on this draft, please carefully read through the above sections: (1) What is a Policy Brief, and (2) Explanation and Guidelines for Policy Brief Components

    draft cover page should include:

    1. Working title of your paper, including footnote to any GenAI tool(s) you used (if any), briefly explaining how you used them.

    2. No name (double-blind review)

    3. Org. youll represent

    4. Policymaker(s) youll target (name(s) and title(s))

    5. Draft executive summary (~150 words single-spaced)

II. Four substantive sections (each should be labeled as such for full points, see above):

    1. Statement of the Problem

    2. History of the Problem and Current Context

    3. Critique of Policy Options

    4. Preliminary Policy Recommendation(s) (Its understood that these will be in draft form, but the more developed they are, the better feedback youll receive. Even one paragraph is sufficient for this section.)

III. Bibliography: 10 high quality substantive sources that are directly related to the human rights policy problem youve identified, a minimum of 5 of which should be peer-reviewed sources. The remainder may be authoritative policy reports, legislation, court cases, etc. Although you are highly encouraged to use news sources, these should not be included in the 10-source minimum. Also, the UN human rights documents you cite as being violated (e.g. CCPR, CESCR, CEDAW, CRC, etc.) are not counted in the 10-count minimum, since these simply reference human rights law. They are not a substantive source that will help you write a strong policy proposal Please include full bibliographic information using the or Chicago (and as noted above, include in-text citations or footnotes throughout your draft)

  • Communications Question

Select a scholarly (peer-reviewed) journal article (no older than 2018) relevant to Homeland Security or Homeland Defense from the APUS Online Library. You will conduct an article review of that scholarly journal article. It must be related to the course or course materials but should not be one of the provided course readings. The intent is for students to do some external research away from the provided references and find an article in the APUS Online Library. Students should search the library’s online databases, such as ProQuest, EbscoHost, and others, to find scholarly or peer-reviewed articles. Web addresses, blogs, news sites, magazines, and testimonies are not scholarly. Stick to what you find in one of the journal search engines in the library, and not what you find when you do a simple search on the Internet.

Additionally, the review of the journal article is an evaluation of the article’s strengths, weaknesses, and validity. You will use this to decide the articles value through your explanation, interpretation, and analysis. Use the required elements below as headings in your paper.

    • Introduction
    • Analysis (that covers the following:)
      1. The purpose of this article – identify the article you are reviewing in this section.
      2. Why it is important to investigate or examine the subject of the article – including the research question/topic.
      3. How the author answers the research question – discuss the research design and theoretical framework in the article).
      4. What the author claims to have found out – are the findings clearly stated?
      5. How does the author advance knowledge in the field?
    • A conclusion that summarizes the main ideas

    Technical Requirements

    • Your paper must be at a minimum of 5 pages (Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit).
    • A peer-reviewed journal article must be used.
    • You may use other references but only to support the review of the primary journal article.
    • Limit your use of direct quotations.
    • Type in Times New Roman, 12 point, and double space.
    • Students will follow the current APA Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.
    • Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic-type sources if used to support your review of the primary journal article.
    • All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric.

    Requirements:

  • The U.S. election system and the Supreme Court

Your paper should be 5 pages in length It should be in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced, with normal, one-inch margins How to Submit Your Paper Is the U.S. political system as democratic as it should be? Why or why not? If not, how could the system be improved, in your opinion, to be made more democratic? To answer this topic, focus on TWO of the following aspects of the U.S. system. The Senate The Supreme Court The U.S. election system Use the following readings for your research. If you are choosing the Senate: Primarily use the readings contained in Module 3 Also locate one other reliable source using Credo Reference If you are choosing the Supreme Court: Primarily use the readings from Module 5 Also locate one other reliable source using Credo Reference If you are choosing the U.S. election system: Primarily use the readings from Module 7. Also locate one other reliable source using Credo Reference or CQ Researcher Some Further Instructions In your paper, you should explain in clear detail the sources you’re using. In your paper, you should incorporate quotes and facts from your sources throughout your paragraphs, using APA style in-text citations to do so Remember, you do NOT just want to plop a quote, or a citation, at the end of a paragraph. Instead, you want to INCORPORATE the ideas and quotes from your sources THROUGHOUT your paragraphs. In doing this, you should ALSO be incorporating in-text citations each time you use an idea, fact, or quote from a source. So do NOT simply plop a citation at the end of a paragraph Your paper should contain a rational argument of your own. No matter what, you must not simply state what you believe. You should support your position with reasons to show that your position is the most rational one to take. (In other words, you must give an argument, not an opinion.) Then, your paper should offer a counter-argument paragraph. That is, offer a potential objection that someone could have to the stance youve chosen. Let’s say you are arguing that there’s something undemocratic about the Supreme Court. An objection would go against your position, and try to find weaknesses in your argument That kind of paragraph would begin: “However, some might argue against my position that …” Then, have a paragraph in which you respond to the potential objection to defend yourself. Why are you still right? Are there any aspects of the objection youd be willing to agree with? Why or why not?

  • Individual assignment

For your individual assignment, please respond fully to the following 2 questions. Be sure and cite in your separate bibliography page. Please paste the questions in the body of your paper and then respond. It is due on Feb. 22 (11:59 p.m.).

    1. Define the levels (or scales) of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval levels) AND provide an example of each [4 points].

    2. Please explain “central tendency” as describing “mean”, “median”, and “mode”. Please discuss why it is important to know in statistics and explain how to calculate each value. If necessary, you can use examples [3 points].

    3. Although computer software is used to calculate statistics, some students find that hand calculation furthers their conceptual understanding. Consider the following values: 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 13, 16, and 18. Calculate the mean, median, and mode. Please use Excel to calculate the above statistics and verify them using the computer. (To practice, you can make up your own data, too.) (Please check “Useful resources for individual assignment 1” below before answering this question) [3 points].

    * Format:

    12pt. Times New Roman, Double-spaced

Either .doc or .pdf form is accepted.

** Useful resources for individual assignment 1

    A. To look for simple explanation of various concepts in descriptive statistics and calculation of the three measures of central tendency, you can refer to the descriptive statistics webpage on this website
