  • Module 5 Discussion SEP

    respond to Taylor Brown:

    Taylor Brown1 Module 5 Discussion

    That Makes Sense:
One concept that really makes sense to me is the definition of confidence in sport as a multidimensional construct, particularly the distinction between trait sport confidence and state sport confidence. Trait sport confidence refers to a general belief in ones ability across situations, while state sport confidence is more situation-specific and can fluctuate depending on circumstances. I understand how sources of confidencesuch as mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and physiological statescan directly influence performance. For example, repeated successful performances (mastery experiences) logically strengthen an athletes belief in their abilities. This aligns with the idea that confidence is built, not just something you are born with.

One area I am still trying to fully understand is how to accurately measure concentration during sport performance. I understand that concentration involves focusing on relevant cues in the environment while ignoring distractions, and that it includes components like selective attention and attentional control. However, I find it confusing how practitioners can objectively assess whether an athletes attentional focus is truly optimal during competition, especially since attention can shift so quickly.

Previously, I thought confidence was mostly about positive self-talk. This module helped me realize that confidence is more complex and rooted in preparation, past performance, and cognitive appraisal. As a future professional, I would focus more on helping athletes build confidence through structured goal-setting, deliberate practice, and simulation training rather than just motivational speeches. Similarly, I would incorporate concentration strategies like pre-performance routines and cue words to help athletes maintain focus under pressure.

    Swing Revival.

The 1990s saw a revival of the swing style. New swing bands released popular recordings and were featured as part of advertising campaigns and even at the Super Bowl half time show. Prominent bands of the decade included the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Listen to some selections of music from the swing revival (search for songs by these bands on Spotify or YouTube, or check out the “Swing Revival” Spotify playlist below) and compare the sound of this music to the swing-era selections on this week’s playlist by Fletcher Henderson, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. Note any differences in timbre, instrumentation, and groove. Most of the lyrics for music in the swing era were similar in theme to Tin Pan Alley songs. How do the lyrics of music from the swing revival of the 1990s differ from those in the Tin Pan Alley era?

    Article 1: American Nurses Association

This weeks readings focus on the importance of evidence-based assessment, therapeutic communication, and obtaining a complete health history to support safe and effective nursing care. A comprehensive health history helps nurses identify current and potential health concerns while building trust with patients. The interview process is essential because it allows nurses to gather accurate and meaningful information. According to the text, effective communication improves patient understanding and supports better health outcomes (Ogrodnick et al., 2021). Using open-ended questions, active listening, and empathy encourages patients to share sensitive information and promotes a patient-centered approach.

The readings also highlight the importance of using evidence-based practice when providing health education, counseling, and risk screening. Nurses use research and clinical evidence to guide interventions and promote safety. In addition, health literacy and cultural competence are critical because they help nurses ensure patients understand their care. The authors emphasize that health literacy is essential for patient engagement and self-management (Ogrodnick et al., 2021). Overall, these concepts help nurses provide high-quality, culturally competent, and patient-focused care.
