Culture Self-Identity and Politics
The assigned article Beyond “Culture”: Space, Identity, and the Politics of Difference by Indian postcolonial scholar Akhil Gupta and American critical anthropologist James Ferguson critiques how Anthropologys use of culture has failed to fully explain the politics of cultural differences and their production. Challenging the notion of culture as a fixed, geographically bounded phenomenonsuch as in Geertzs workthey argue that the concept of culture itself shapes imaginaries of space and belonging, a perspective also supported by Soekefeld. In Modules 1 and 2, we debunked the idea that culture alone determines identity within a specific locality. While focusing on the individual is one way to theorize culture, Gupta and Ferguson push us to examine how hierarchies of race, class, and gender are constructed and legitimized through cultural narratives. For instance, Trumps previous and current rhetoric on immigrationframing it as a threat to the purity of American cultureillustrates how ideas around culture (which often correlates with nationhood in political rhetoric) can be deployed to justify exclusion and assert superiority. For this modules assignment, please address the following: Define the cultural critique approach in Anthropology. Explain the following quote using a cultural critique lens: For if one begins with the premise that spaces have always been hierarchically interconnected, instead of naturally disconnected, that cultural and social change becomes not a matter of cultural contact and articulation but one of rethinking differences through connection (Gupta & Ferguson 1992: 8). Briefly explain how Foucault theorizes power. -

Case Study
Review Chapter 2 and then read the scenario below.
Scenario
Suzan has worked for Organization ABC for one year. During her 30-day review, Suzan received amazing scores from her supervisor. During her 60-day review, Suzans performance was deemed as acceptable, but her ability to communicate with her colleagues was lacking. During Suzans 90-day review, Suzans supervisor, at the time, expressed that her performance needed serious improvements. Unfortunately, Suzans supervisor noted the following:
- Suzan did not provide her colleagues with messages from customers and vendors.
- Suzans phone skills were ineffective, especially when interacting with customers.
- Suzans temper was a concern and she often raised her voice when she became frustrated.
You have been hired to replace Suzans previous supervisor. Between Suzans 90-day review and presently (her annual review), you have noticed that Suzans performance still is a problem. Before her departure from the organization, Suzans past supervisor stated, Suzan is nice; however, she is a horrible communicator. I cannot work with her, as she is such a challenge to deal with Good luck, as Suzan is one of the worst employees of Organization ABC.
During your first week in your new role as supervisor, you met with Suzan to understand more about her performance. She stated, I am a hard worker; however, I only was told what I was doing wrong. I am willing to learn. Can you help me become the best employee for Organization ABC? I want to succeed in this role.
As a supervisor, you know that you have various responsibilities. One of your responsibilities is to address performance deficiencies. Although Suzan was provided with a job description, which included detailed information about the critical nature of communication in her role, she needs additional support.
Examine pages 79 and 80 in your textbook. Then, create a plan, specific to Suzans needs, detailing how you will utilize the following to ensure improved performance:
- Observation and documentation
- Updates
- Feedback
- Resources
- Reinforcement
For example, when thinking about observation and documentation, what might you do to keep track of Suzans performance? Why? When thinking about updates, how will you keep Suzan updated? Explain and justify your rationale for each of the five components and why you made the recommendations that you provided.
Your well-written paper should meet the following requirements:
- Be 4-6 pages in length, which does not include the title and reference pages, which are never a part of the content minimum requirements.
- Use Saudi Electronic University academic writing standards and APA style guidelines.
- Support your submission with course material concepts, principles and theories from the textbook and at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Review the grading rubric to see how you will be graded for this assignment.

EPI short answer
Question 1.
An epidemiologic study was conducted among workers at a new pesticide manufacturing plant in
Michigan. The purpose of the study was to see if routine exposure to pesticide residue increased the risk of acute respiratory infection (ARI). All 500 workers in the plant participated in the study during a full year of follow-up and all were free from ARI at the start of the study.
Pesticide levels were monitored daily in two sections of the plant, one in which pesticides were
stored and handled on a high-volume basis and one in which non-pesticide operations took place.
425 plant workers were assigned to the high-volume pesticide location and the remaining workers
were assigned to the non-pesticide location. All workers underwent monthly health exams in which they were tested for ARI. At the conclusion of the study, 85 participants had been diagnosed with at least one ARI. 68 of these were among the workers assigned to the high-volume pesticide location and 17 among the remaining workers.
a) In two sentences, is this an example of a prospective cohort study or a retrospective cohort study? How do you know?
e) Do you believe that selection bias played a role in these study findings? Explain why or why not. 1-3 sentences.
Question 2. (20 points, 10 points each)
a. Describe an example of a retrospective cohort study. Make sure to denote the exposure and outcome and how information is collected. (3-5 sentences)
