  • REPLIES: Discussion Thread: Authorial Intent

    REPLIES:

MA Students: You should make a minimum of two peer responses that engage with the initial post and offer a meaningful response. That response can take several forms such as adding to the post by contributing something toward the meaning or by offering other potential reactions or any number of possible responses.

    250 WORDS EACH REPLY.

Texts make a kind of shared knowledge. There is an authors intended meaning and a readers interpretive meaning. In reading Chapter 1 of Hirschs book, it is easy to see that meaning even for the author can change. Chapter 2 gives way to meaning and implication and a discussion on a critics objective, namely that those attempting to uncover the authors meaning in a text may learn something, but those seeking only their own meanings will learn nothing new.

MA Students: For this second discussion, please write about what you have discovered about the meaning(s) of the text you are using for this course.

    attached instructions.

    Competency

Explain the range of diverse populations and needs served by Human Services Professionals.

    Scenario

Human Services Professionals serve many populations (e.g., children, elderly, those experiencing mental illness) served by Human Services Professionals and continuously work to improve the services they provide to these populations.

As a newly hired Human Services Professional, working with a population you are inspired to help, your team is charged with seeking additional funding to continue serving this population. Part of this process includes creating an educational handout for community members to better understand the population, current gaps in service, and interventions that help. Your goal is for community members to see this handout and understand the importance of bridging these gaps.

    Instructions

Review the populations described in Section 03 of our book. Select a vulnerable population you are inspired to help that matches the Human Services role you identified in your Module 02 assessment.

Create an educational handout about your selected population to be distributed to community members. Your handout should be 1-2 pages and include the following:

    • A description of the selected population
    • Challenges routinely faced by the population

  • Fighting Corruption at Siemens

Overview Fighting Corruption at Siemens (Harvard Business Publishing) multi-media case study (details in Coursepack). On November 15, 2006, German prosecutors raided offices and homes of Siemens AG staff as part of an ongoing investigation into bribery. The subsequent investigations covered business representing 60% of Siemens’ revenues and spanned operations in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. Through interviews with key Siemens executives and supporting internal materials, this multimedia case takes a look at how one of the world’s largest companies faced corruption head-on. (Summary of case taken from: https://hbsp.harvard.edu/product/112702-HTM-ENGLinks to an external site.) Assignment You will write a paper that responds to prompts communicated in the Instructors video introduction to the case (posted in Module 2) and copied here. The multi-media case study will be completed in Modules 2-4. You will submit a full rough draft of your responses to the prompts in Module 4. Once you have received feedback on your draft, you are to submit a final draft in Module 6. Prompts: (1) What is corruption? Who is harmed by corruption/what are the costs of corruption? (2) How did a well-known multinational firm like Siemens get itself into this situation? (3) What would be your concerns if you were Peter Loscher and had just accepted the position as Siemens CEO? What challenges exist and what actions should be taken? (4) Evaluate the change process adopted by Siemens. How effective is Loscher in changing the tone from the top in his meeting with employees (video shown on the Tone from the Top page)? Which of the other changes are important in addressing Siemens’ challenges and Loscher’s concerns identified in question 3? (5) In the training materials, two of the situations employees are asked to review include (a) a request from a representative of a private customer to arrange an internship for his son in the company; and (b) a request from a public customer in Kazakhstan that Siemens arrange travel and sightseeing for two members of the ministry of economics who are planning on joining customer representatives on an acceptance visit before delivery. The customer also requests that Siemens pay customer employees a per diem of $75 during U.S. training. How would you handle these situations? How would Siemens want them to be handled under its new standards? Technical and Submission Instructions Papers must be double-spaced, 12 pt. font, and 8 pages in length. NOTE: All documents should be saved as follows: ASmith_Assignment1 (your first initial, last name, underscore, and assignment number) and submitted to the appropriate Turnitin submission area in Blackboard. • Health Promotion Research

Conduct the windshield survey worksheets and research for the health promotion research assessment. Collapse All Introduction This first assessment is the research and background information for the presentation you will give in your last assessment. Consider this the nursing process for your chosen community (assessment, diagnostics, planning, interventions, and evaluation). The first step in any effective project or clinical patient encounter is planning. This assessment provides an opportunity for you to plan a learning experience focused on health promotion associated with the specific community health concern you selected from the provided document. Such a plan defines the critical elements of who, what, when, where, and why that establish the foundation for an effective clinical learning experience for the participants. Completing this assessment will strengthen your understanding of how to plan and negotiate individual or group participation. The two windshield survey worksheets will be critical steps in completing this assessment. This assessment is the foundation for the implementation of Assessment 4, Health Promotion Plan Presentation. Note: Assessment 1 must be completed first before you are able to submit Assessment 4. Complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented. Preparation Be sure you’ve completed the Windshield Survey Worksheet 1: Assess Your Community and Windshield Survey Worksheet 2: Tour Your Community activities. Then complete this assessment as if within a neighborhood or community of your choice. Your community, which will become the focus of your health promotion plan, could be something like the elderly housing center, high school, or your own neighborhood. It could even be a subset of or an individual within that community, for instance, one of the students at the high school or a resident at the elderly housing center. Instructions Complete the following: Assess your chosen community to include socioeconomic and demographic data such as location, lifestyle, age, race, ethnicity, gender, marital status, income, education, employment. (Complete the windshield surveys first.) Choose a specific health concern or health need from the Assessment 1 Supplement: Health Promotion Research [PDF] as the focus of your health promotion plan for your chosen community. Then, analyze a population within your community with the health concern or need you’ve chosen to focus on and the best practices for health improvement, based on supporting evidence. Consider underlying assumptions and points of uncertainty in your analysis. Describe in detail the characteristics of your chosen community who will be the audience for the activity you are planning and how those characteristics are relevant to what you’ve learned about the targeted population. Describe in detail the relevant information of who within this community is affected by your chosen health issue. Explain why the population you are focusing on in your community is predisposed to this health concern or health need and why they can benefit from a health promotion educational plan. Consider the factors that contribute to health, health disparities, and access to services. Support your conclusions with relevant population health and demographic data. Based on the health concern for your individual or group, discuss what you would include in the development of a sociogram. Take into consideration possible social, economic, cultural, genetic, and/or lifestyle behaviors that may have an impact on health as you develop your educational plan in this assessment. You will take this information into consideration when you present your educational plan in Assessment 4. Identify your chosen individual’s or group’s potential learning needs. Imagine the input of your audience if you were collaborating with the individual or group to establish the SMART goals that would be used to evaluate the education session (Assessment 4). Identify the individual or group’s current behaviors, outline clear expectations for this educational session, and offer suggestions for how the individual or group needs can be met. Health promotion goals need to be clear, measurable, and appropriate for this activity and audience. Consider goals that will foster behavior changes and lead to the desired outcomes. Be sure to apply APA formatting to in-text citations and references exhibiting nearly flawless adherence to APA format. Write with a specific purpose and audience in mind. Adhere to scholarly and disciplinary writing standards and APA formatting requirements. Read the performance-level descriptions for each criterion in the scoring guide to see how your work will be assessed. Additional Requirements Your assessment should also meet the following requirements: Document format and length: Your health promotion plan should be 46 pages in length. Supporting evidence: Support your health promotion plan with peer-reviewed articles, course study resources, and Healthy People 2030 resources. Cite at least three credible sources published within the past 5 years using APA format. Before submitting your assessment for grading, proofread it to minimize errors that could distract readers and make it difficult for them to focus on the substance of your plan. Competencies Measured By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria: Competency 1: Analyze health risks and healthcare needs among distinct populations. Analyze a population within a chosen community with a health concern or need that is the focus of a health promotion plan. Describe in detail the characteristics of a chosen community who will be the audience for a health promotion and how those characteristics are relevant to a larger target community. Competency 2: Propose health promotion strategies to improve the health of populations. Explain why a health concern or need is important for health promotion within a community and population, supporting conclusions with relevant population health and demographic data. Establish health goals appropriate for a chosen individual or group of participants that are realistic, measurable, and attainable. Competency 5: Apply professional, scholarly communication strategies to lead health promotion and improve population health. Organize content so ideas flow logically with smooth transitions; contains few errors in grammar/punctuation, word choice, and spelling. Apply APA formatting to in-text citations and references, exhibiting nearly flawless adherence to APA format.
  • soci300 Paper #1: The News Media

Your paper must be word-processed, double-spaced and at least 750 words in length (excluding your name, title, and references). Your paper is worth 100 points.

The news media is the primary method most Americans use to get their information about myriad issues, including those relating to race and ethnic relations.

For this assignment you are to analyze a current news article that is about explicitly or tangentially race and ethnic relations (from a reputable BIPARTISAN – or NONPARTISAN – source, this includes, newspapers, newspapers or online news, or magazines such Vanity Fair or The New Yorker, etc. You may even use stories discussed in the textbook but be sure to look for and use the actual article cited) in sociological terms (or as a sociologist would do it).

Find a story that intrigues you about race and ethnic relations. Critically analyze the article using class material. Although the first part asks for a brief summary of the facts this is the least important part of the assignment. The most important part are the questions that follow! Do not forget to answer all of the questions for full credit and answer them with knowledge gained from this course. Be sure to include the following points:

    Identify the following:

    1. Who is involved?
    2. What happened?
    3. Why did it happen?
    4. Where did it occur?
    5. When did it occur?
    6. What aspect of race and ethnic relations is being addressed?

This is the most important part! Thoroughly answer the following questions:

    1. How would the aspect of race and ethnic relations in question be explained by sociologists (using sociological concepts covered in this course)?
    2. How (if) could this issue be addressed differently than it is right now?
    3. Be sure to clearly state how the groups or people involved are invested in the definition of the situation (i.e., the race and ethnic relations at hand) provided (either resolving it or perpetuating it).
    4. cite artile and book

  • GENN 499 DIS 2

    In your discussion post,

    • Restate the problem statement from your assignment.
    • Evaluate the problem using a cultural (subjective) lens.
    • Include two pieces of evidence to support your position (e.g., demographic data, local history, etc.). Information or content from the library or textbook is not necessarily current or directly related to the problem you are investigating.

Problem statement, in hyperlink as well for refernce – Why Look for Problems?

Without change and invention, we stagnate. If we embrace a growth mindset, we embrace change and problem solving as well. Certainly, employers seek employees who can help them grow their business by solving problems and streamlining operations, which reduces risk to employees while increasing profits for the business.

While some may be oblivious to problems, others may be change agents who exercise active citizenship by seeing problems as opportunities to find solutions that make a positive difference. Sometimes our solutions are discovered serendipitously where we search for one solution but end up discovering something different that can be even more impactful. For example, as one of the few women chemists at DuPont in the 1960s, Stephanie Kwoleks work led to the development of Kevlar, a fiber best known for its use in bullet-resistant vests.
