    Discussion 1.

    Discussion Topic: Discussion 1Discussion 1

The idea of the discussion post is to have all participants share their original thoughts and analysis of the content, and then build on each others ideas through responses to other students posts. You are encouraged to use supporting details from the textbook and other credible sources to support your points. If you do choose to use these sources, remember to cite the source (e.g., textbook; website link that can be easily accessed; peer-reviewed article) using APA formatting style (see syllabus for links to resources on how to cite correctly). With the exception of terminology and data, do not use quotes. Responses should be in your own words. All responses should be complete, comprehensive, compelling, and grammatically correct!

Please see the syllabus for additional details about content expectations for discussion posts. You must submit your initial, personal post replying to the main discussion question before you are able to see other student posts and reply to two (2) of these peer posts. The posts you select do not necessarily have to be someone you agree or disagree with just respectfully discuss.

    • Personal Post are worth 30 points and should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs (7-9 sentences each) long. See syllabus for full instructions.

      • All late posts will receive a 0 for the assignment.
Failure to do the initial post results in a 0 for the assignment.

    • Response Posts: Both response posts (worth 5 points each) . Responses should be thoughtful, respectful and should be a minimum of one (1) full paragraph (7-9 sentences). See syllabus for full instructions.

    • Treat your posts and miniature essays. Sentences should be complete, comprehensive, and informative. Your paragraphs should consist of these sentences! Make sure that your posts tell a compelling story and have a clear flow of ideas!

      • Fun Fact: You will not receive full credit if you submit a post along the lines of the following: “One time we were in Mexico on vacation. It was legit until my mom got really sick. There was only a small clinic aroud. She went there and their where a lot of people waiting. It took forever and the place was realdly small and not like here. We finally saw the dr but he didn’t speak English. My mom was really bad now and had the chills and her stomach hurt so bad. Discussion Question #1:

For this post, describe in detail a personal health/healthcare experience related to culture or a personal cultural health belief or practice, being sure that you also make clear in detail how it is connected to culture and course content. This can be an experience, belief or practice of you as an individual, of someone you know, or an example from your personal cultural background, as long as it is relevant to the topic of culture and health.

Here are some example ideas of what this might entail. Please also see the “Discussion Post Examples” document in week 3 module for more specific examples of successful discussion posts (Note: This is not a comprehensive list. These examples are just meant to help you start thinking about how to frame your experience/cultural belief in the larger context of themes from class):

    (1) Describe a health belief or practice and how it might either positively or negatively influence a specific health outcome of the cultural group.

    (2) Describe a positive healthcare experience which displayed cultural competence and cultural humility on the part of the doctor, hospital, or healthcare worker.

    (3) Describe how an experience at a doctors office or hospital may reflect differing cultural perspectives of patient vs. healthcare worker, and how this could influence quality of care or treatment decisions.

    discussion 2.

After you have watched the video “The Weight of the Nation; Latino Health Access: A Model of Community Action”, answer the following:

    1) What are some factors associated with the high levels of childhood obesity in Santa Ana? (3-4 sentences)

    2) Explain how the community in the video used community building to reduce the effects of overweight and obesity (5-8 sentences).

    Discussion Forum 3

    Discussion Forum 3 Instructions

It provides an opportunity for you to virtually connect ask questions and comment on the assigned podcast and other posts for week 3.

    • Initial Substantive Posts:

Students are expected to listen to the assigned podcast and discuss at least TWO separate themes/points by making thoughtful comments and/or questions regarding the selected themes/points in the assigned podcast (350-400 words) in the discussion forum each week. For example, you may describe the key points and/or core arguments made by the presenters and/or explain new pieces of information that you learned from the podcast followed by your own reflections on these points/arguments. Moreover, at least 1 outside source (you may NOT include your textbook) cited (in proper APA format) in your posting to support your rationale and thoughts. A reference listing in proper APA format at the end of your posting is also required.

    • Required Replies:

In addition, students are also required to respond to their classmates posts (e.g., comments, opinions, and questions). Your replies should build on the concept discussed, offer a question to consider, or add a differing perspective, etc. Rather than responding with, “Good post,” explain why the post is “good” (why it is important, useful, insightful, etc.). Or, if you disagree, respectfully share your alternative perspective. Just saying “I agree” or “Good idea” is not sufficient for the posts you would like graded.

    3.6 Assignment: Celebrity baby

Students have been introduced to heredity to Punnett Squares, and also various technologies in genetics to select various traits. This unconventional assignment will require students to pick two celebrities to mix the traits of. They can be of any gender. The goal is to identify which visible traits in those celebrities are dominant and recessive, and how they can actually be mixed using technology, regardless of gender. This assignment can potentially lead into technologies that can assist people of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations in having children, should students choose two celebrities that are not biologically male and female.

This assignment is worth 15% of your course grade.

    Instructions

    1. Research what facial features in humans would fit in the binary: dominant and recessive.

    2. Identify 2 celebrities with biological facial features (not as a result of plastic surgery) that are quite different from each other. Identify two binary facial features (see above) to focus on. For example, this can be detached earlobes (dominant) versus attached earlobes (recessive), and a widows peak (dominant) versus no widows peak (recessive).

    3. Predict all possible genotypes of both celebrities for the two selected features. Explain how it is possible for them to have these genotypes, and what their parents genotypes may have been due to meiosis.

    4. Complete two Punnett squares, one for each selected facial trait, using one of the genotypes predicted in step 3 for each celebrity, to display the genotype and phenotype ratios of the offspring between both celebrities. Report on which phenotype will most likely result.

    5. Assuming the celebrities want to have children and they are of the same biological sex, and/or the celebrities only wanted their child to have one of the partners recessive facial traits, what current technologies can help these celebrities? Present these findings in a paragraph format.

    6. The final submission will be one document featuring the following subtitles and their respective descriptions in brackets:

    a) Celebrity names (both celebrities real names);

    b) Two facial traits (the two facial traits that are dominant and recessive only that you wish to select). You may wish to include pictures from the internet of their selected facial features.

    c) Genotypes (the celebrities possible phenotypes for the two traits that you selected, with a paragraph to explain the meiosis mechanisms that enabled them to have these traits passed down from their parents).

    d) Punnett Squares (2 Punnett squares, with each one showing one of the two facial traits you selected with both celebrities as parents. The most likely phenotype in both cases must be reported.)

    e) Current technologies (that can assist the celebrities in having a child if they cannot biologically conceive, or if they only wish their child to have one of the partners recessive traits).

    f) APA-formatted reference list (with list of sources used for research).

Your teacher-marker will grade and provide feedback on your work using the following success criteria and rubric. Before submitting your assignment, review the success criteria and rubric. If you are unsure about how to format your assignments, citation or what constitutes plagiarism, please review the following support pages:

    Success criteria and rubric

The two facial traits selected must be dominant or recessive.

The genotypes for both celebrities must be genetically sound (consider homozygous dominant and heterozygous where dominant traits are the phenotype).

The explanation of the familial origins of the genotypes must be 200-250 words in length and include the meiosis mechanisms that can explain their origin.

The Punnett squares must be properly labelled and complete for both chosen facial features.

The current technologies, based on research, must help those celebrities produce the offspring that they want.

The current technologies paragraph must be 200-250 words in length.

APA-formatted in-text citations, and an accompanying reference list, are present.

Please note that you will not be able to submit your assignment and the submission space will not appear until all previous assignments have been graded and returned to you.

Hi Im sharing some background information about my routine and lifestyle so you can understand what my discussion post should reflect. Please use this only as guidance and write the post in your own words so that it does not resemble the sample I provided.

I work as a nurse in a hospital with a rotating schedule. Typically I complete four consecutive shifts two day shifts followed by two night shifts. After these shifts, I spend several days recovering at home, focusing on rest, sleep, and re-balancing my energy. This recovery period is important for my physical and mental well-being because the schedule can be demanding.

During my days off, I stay active by going to the gym regularly. Physical activity is an important part of my self-care routine and helps reduce stress and maintain energy. I also work part-time in an aesthetic clinic, which provides a different professional environment and contributes to my personal and career development.

Social connection is another important part of my lifestyle. I spend time communicating with friends and maintaining relationships. Many of our conversations involve current events and political issues related to my home country, Iran. Because my family lives there and the situation has been very difficult for them, these topics are deeply personal to me. I talk with friends and family about what is happening, and when possible I participate in peaceful demonstrations and advocacy activities. This involvement is meaningful to my sense of identity and emotional well-being.

Overall, my routine includes balancing demanding clinical work, recovery time, physical fitness, social connection, and engagement with issues that matter to me personally. The discussion post should reflect how these aspects relate to self-care across physical, psychological, and social dimensions. I added the sample to see

  • Passion for helping people and humanities through creative w…

Why are you passionate about helping people? What makes the humanities exciting for you? In this discussion, you will reflect on a creative work that excites you. Think about something you’re a fan of, such as your favorite book, comic book series, graphic novel, TV show, or movie. What makes this creative work exciting for you? Youll also think about where you can meet with other fans to discuss your creative works. This meeting can include places like social media, such as TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, or Discord, or in-person eventsbook clubs, library-sponsored movie clubs, book or film festivals, watch or viewing parties, midnight releases, conventions, or cosplay events. Discussing the humanities means investigating opinions and ideas different from your own. Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful toward your peers and instructor in your initial post as well as in your response discussion posts. Create one initial post and respond to at least two of your classmates. For your initial post, address the following: How do the creative works that you chose relate to your personal interests? Are you part of a fandom for this interest? Include details and examples of why or why not. How do the creative works relate to the representation of your identity?
