  • HRMT 413 – Week 7: Pick a name.

This week, we learned about the differences between private and public sector unions. One of the most crucial distinctions in the comparison is the fact the public sector unions are drastically more limited when it comes to pressure tactics. It is illegal for public sector unions to strike in 39 states and in those that allow striking, there are usually myriad hoops that must first be jumped through including mediation, arbitration and other dispute resolution measures. The basis for denying public sector unions the right to strike is obviously grounded in legitimate concern namely the stability and security of our countrys basic defense and infrastructure. However, on the other hand, denying the right to strike severely limits the ability of public workers to negotiate for better working conditions from a position of real power.

For this Assignment, your task is to research public sector union dynamics and write an essay of not less than 1,000 words describing their history and evolution. Include ALL of the following in your essay:

    • Where and when were public sector union rights first recognized?
    • How are they legally supported today?
    • Where and when did concerns about public sector union striking first emerge? How were these concerns handled legislatively?
    • What is the history of public sector union strikes? Has this happened frequently? What were some of the most significant occasions and how did it go?
    • Lastly, what is your opinion on the prohibition of public sector union strikes? Do you think that national security and stability interests should continue to take precedence over collective bargaining prerogatives? Or should public sector workers be free to strike notwithstanding the implications for society? Explain your position.

Again, your essay should be at least 1,000 words. Use a legible fontpreferably 12 pt, Times New Roman. Single-spacing is fine. 1-inch margins. Please be sure to follow the rubric requirements for this assignment and include a reference list at the end of your essay with at least five (5) credible sources, in proper APA reference formatting.

The interviews that you completed in Week 3 provide background information for your course project to be submitted in this assignment. To support your work, you will also include a literature review. You will need at least three scholarly journal articles. You can use the articles that you referenced in previous weeks’ readings and assignments, or you can search for articles from the South University Online Library for your literature review. In your literature review:

    • Write a short summary (one to two paragraphs) for each article.
    • Write a brief analysis (one to two paragraphs) for each article and relate each analysis to your course and text readings.
    • Make a connection, if possible, to the interview process and your own evaluation of each interviewee.

When researching information for your literature review, you also will need to incorporate one or more of the following factors to relate with the interviewees’ evaluations:

    • Similarities and differences between development according to gender, ethnicity, and socially derived groups
    • Age-appropriate and socially constructed milestones
    • Impact of interpersonal factors (e.g., social roles and relationships) during early and middle adulthood
    • The nature of stress, coping, and resistance in the context of gender
    • The importance of gender identity in the context of work

Develop your final project in a 4- to 5-page Microsoft Word document written in APA format, including the following sections:

    • A title page
    • An abstract (summary of the course project)
    • An introduction section including:
    • An introduction to gender development and identity based on your course and text readings
    • The purpose of the paper
    • A literature review section including:
    • A review and analysis of the scholarly journal articles
    • An understanding of how gender theories apply to the interview responses and a comparison with your own responses (identifying the theories)
    • A methods section including:
    • The proposed participants and age groups (without any personal information)
    • The questions used
    • The setting (one-on-one interviews)
    • A results section including:
    • General information, such as the setting (time and place) of the interviews
    • Answers to the demographic and interview questions
    • Applicable quotes from the interviewees that highlight your analysis
    • A discussion section including:
    • An analysis of gender development and the identity of each of the individuals interviewed
