  • Case 2: AI and Productivity

Please read Machines of Mind: The case for an AI-powered productivity boom by Brynjolfsson et. al. posted on D2L.

Each group member has a different background and work experience. The questions below will be include all three of your backgrounds in each question. i.e. I do not want Q1 to be answered based on only one of your jobs/backgrounds. I want it answered based on all your jobs/backgrounds to have a collective response for Q1. Same holds for Q2.

Please make sure to bring in specific productivity concepts from class week 3 about productivity and costs–e.g. law of diminishing returns, economics of scale, marginal product of labor etc etc as they apply–do not force fit concepts that do not apply.

    1. The authors emphasize that the impact of Generative AI on long run productivity comes from two channels. The first is the increase efficiency of output production. Since workers performing cognitive tasks will be more efficient, production will increase. The second (and according to the authors, the most important one) is the acceleration of innovation and thus future productivity growth. This is because the more productive workers will invent and discover new things (products or processes), which will further boost future productivity. This growth compounds and the economy grows larger (see Graph 2).

Based on each of your current or past jobs/backgrounds, give examples of how each of these channels could lead to higher long run productivity of your unit or division. Be specific about the types of tasks, products, output affected. Be specific about how worker productivity stands to increase. Could this productivity growth also lead to growth of other divisions and your company in general? Briefly explain how and why. Make sure to link your examples to the productivity measures from class, both the short run measures and the long run measures.

    2. The authors also stress that a bigger pie does not automatically mean everyone benefits evenly, or at all. This is because a widespread roll-out of generative AI could significantly disrupt labor markets. Ultimately, they conclude, the effect of Generative AI on labor demand depends on whether the systems complement or substitute for labor. Substitution occurs when AI models automate most or all tasks of certain jobs, while complementing occurs if they automate small parts of certain jobs, leaving humans indispensable. Additionally, AI systems can be complementary to human labor if they enable new tasks or increase quality.

Will the tasks you identified in your response to Q1 be substitutes or complements for AI in the long run? Be precise about how the substitution or complementarity will impact demand for labor going forward.

    Discussion Forum 1

Consider the following scenario: You are working as an Applied Behavior Analyst at a local elementary school. A teacher asks you to help figure out why one of his students rips up her paper every time she is given a math worksheet to complete during math class. She does not do this when she is assigned a worksheet in language arts.

How should you approach this scenario given the seven underlying assumptions of behavioral science that are discussed in the lesson (selectionism, determinism, empiricism, experimentation, replication, parsimony, and philosophical doubt)?

To answer the question, select 2 of the assumptions listed above OTHER than selectionism (because of the example below). Then for each assumption,

    (1) Define the term, and

    (2) Describe specifically how the assumption applies to the scenario.

  • Apply Design Principles

After researching the benefits that volunteerism adds to an organization, you have realized that you need to begin researching the types of community service projects that might be a “good fit” for MoxieTogs.

    Background and Overview

Read Chapter 5 in Writing that Works and review all of the Module 2 resources in preparation for completing this assignment in which you will use good design principles to revise an existing document. If design principles are new to you, you may find it helpful to complete the Module 2 Skill-Building Activity before beginning this assignment.

Estimated Time for Completion: 60 minutes

    Target Course Objectives

    • Utilize effective drafting, revising, and document design strategies to compose emails, letters, memos, reports, instructions, resumes, presentations, and proposals that meet standard English usage expectations.

  • Essay #3

READ Addressing Opposition and Establishing Common Ground pages 235-236

textbook: Current Issues and Enduring Questions Create a well-thought-out argument concerning a problem our society faces and one potential solution that could correct or lessen the problem. Be sure to distinguish fact from opinion.

Choose one of the topics listed at the end of this instruction sheet.

Type up a 5-6 page MLA research paper using 4-5 sources. Insert your research wherever it makes sense. You can back up your ideas with research or discuss a quotation. You can agree or disagree with the authors.

Include a works cited page formatted properly in MLA style. That works cited page must be there and it will be page 5 or 6 of the paper.

Form an argument claim that indicates that the subject is a problem but that there are solutions that can solve it or at least mitigate the effects. This is your thesis and it goes at the end of the introduction.

Be sure that your introduction is a true Rogerian structure.

When choosing your sources, find a variety of different perspectives, experiences, and credentials and discuss their points-of-view. Review our lesson on

    *************************************************************************************************************

    Follow this outline

    Section 1: Approx. 1 page (2-3 paragraphs)

Describe the issue and explore the subject from the point-of-view of someone who may not think it is a problem.

Your thesis needs to be clear that this is, indeed, a problem.

    Review our lectures on ands

    *************************************************************************************************************

Section 2: Approx. 112- pages (2 separate paragraphs)

Take two of the best reasons to support your thesis and place them in separate paragraphs. Be sure that these two reasons are substantially different from each other or you may end up repeating yourself.

Each paragraph will have a clear topic sentence reflecting the one reason you are focusing on. It will also have full development showcasing your critical thinking and examples. Provide statements of your point-of-view and the context in which it might be valid.

Good examples, either real-life or hypothetical, can help the reader understand your point-of-view. What are two bad effects of your subject?

This section is where you build your argument to support your point-of-view. Watch your tone. State your reasons and support them but dont attack your reader.

Develop each of these paragraphs in full Toulmin structure. Use what you learned throughout this semester to help develop these points and include research.

Insert research as appropriate and use signal phrases and parenthetical citations.

    ***************************************************************************************************************

    Section 3: Approx. 1 page

State one possible solution that could help lessen the problem and then create a plan of action. Take your reader through how to accomplish it step-by-step. (Please dont say step one, step two) Try not to go over one page. Use examples or research as needed, but this needs to be YOUR plan, not one you found.

    Review our lecture on .

    ***************************************************************************************************************

    Section 4: Approx. 12 page

The following can be combined or split into micro-paragraphs, whichever works better.

    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan. How well is it likely to work?
    • Acknowledge the potential limitations or problems that could arise with your plan
    • Discuss how we could deal with those problems
    • Are there other potential outcomes (positive or negative) that could come from this plan?

    **************************************************************************************************************

    Section 5: Approx. 14 page

    Reconciliation or compromise

Provide a statement of how the readers position or our society would benefit if he or she were to accept elements of your position. If you can show that the two positions complement each other and each supplies what the other lacks, so much the better. This is reconciliation or compromise.

End the paper with a statement of why this subject is so important to our society and why we should try to compromise and understand each other. End with a reaffirmation that this is a problem and that it needs to be dealt with in one way or another. You can blend this with another selection from the conclusions lecture, if you want to, but be sure you are including the things listed above.
