    What to Do:

    1. Select your example or case study. Look for something that serves as an example to highlight the issues raised in the readings.
    2. Describe your case and provide context: Who are the main actors or stakeholders? What is the technology at play? What are the political, economic, or cultural stakes?
    3. Draw connections between the readings and your case study. How does your example help us understand the ideas presented in the texts?

    Format & Requirements:

  • Wk 4 Discussion – Managing the Physical Flow

Context: Having the right product at the right place and time at the right cost and quality is one of the biggest challenges an operations and supply chain manager encounters. To successfully meet customer needs, supply chain professionals must accurately forecast and support operational needs. This requires robust forecasting, inventory, and information management capability.

    Discussion:

Based on a related Internet search, identify a a fulfillment failure. A fulfillment failure is when the item does not make it through its supply chain. Assess why it happened (this will most likely require research).

Note: You may use a personal experience if you have access to the information to identify the supply chain of the item and have knowledge of how the break in the item’s supply chain was identified and corrected.

Be sure to choose an example that allows you to showcase the analysis and application. The fulfillment failure must be solved through the supply chain analysis.

As you dissect the fulfillment failure, you must address how each of the following may have or may not have contributed to the problem. Give the explanation why.

    • Forecastingthat is, did managers underestimate demand? If so, what went wrong?–You may have to look at all parties in the supply chain (raw material, manufacturer, distributor, retailer etc)
    • Inventory that is, did decision makers run too lean, leading to a stock out or shortage? If so, what went wrong? (again, all parties)
    • Information that is, did managers have all the information they needed to make good decisions? If not, why not? What information is accurate and readily available?
    • What else might have contributed to the fulfillment? (other parts of the supply chain that should be analyzed)

If the experience you are sharing comes from your work experience, please share how you and your company resolved the issue. What did you do to fix the underlying causes in order to make sure your company did not suffer a similar fulfillment failure again? If you did not find the fix, how would you advise the company to fix their issue so it could not happen again (note: this will be based on what you found in your research).

Organize your post with the following headers:

Brief description of the fulfillment failure (item specific)

Dissection to root cause: (Walk through Forecasting, Inventory, Information, Other considerations for the item)

The Fix so it never happens again

The “Ship Now, Secure Later” Mandate

You are a junior DevOps engineer at a startup that is developing a low-cost remote patient monitoring system for rural healthcare clinics and providers. The initial system is designed for chronic disease management (e.g., patients with diabetes or hypertension) where data is collected throughout the day and synced at intervals. Patients will wear the appropriate type of sensor (continuous pulse oximeter or glucose monitor, for example) that is paired with their smartphone. The app requires the patient to manually trigger a sync or confirm a reading, making it “periodic” rather than truly continuous.

The system is currently in its final week of testing before a hard launch and the testing team you are part of is running the final tests and reviewing the results, split up so that testers do not review the results of the tests they run. While running one of these final audits, you discover a significant vulnerability: the API used to transmit patient vitals (heart rate, oxygen levels) doesn’t use end-to-end encryption. While its behind a basic firewall, a semi-sophisticated “man-in-the-middle” attack could expose patient identities and health data.

You bring this to your testing team leader and the project’s lead architect. They acknowledge the risk but explain that implementing the fix would delay the launch by three weeks. The company is also out of time; if they dont launch this week to secure the next round of funding, the company will not have the funds to continue operating and would not last long enough to deliver the updated system. Forty people, including yourself. will be unemployed.

The project lead architect tells you to “sign off on the security checklist for now.” She promises that a “Critical Security Patch” will be the #1 priority for Sprint 1, starting the day after launch. Your team leader also reminds you that the risk of an exploit of this kind of system is “statistically low” for the 60 to 90 days, particularly considering the relatively small number of initial customers that are expected in that time. He also mentions that “superior orders” mean the liability sits with them, not you.

For this forum, your task is to respond to the following question related to the request that the lead architect made to you:

As a junior-level employee, do you actually have the epistemic authority (the right to claim you know better) to stall a company-saving launch? If you are “just following orders” from a senior software designer and developer with 20 years of experience, does that diminish your moral responsibility for a potential data leak?

Your response should include a clear statement of your position along with a compelling ethical argument in support of that position. Your argument should incorporate verifiable sources of external evidence to support your action where appropriate.

  • english week 5

Your introduction is the first impression your paper will make on its reader. It should be interesting, to the point, and it should outline the body of your essay. Not only will this outline guide your reader, it will guide you too.

First things first…lets discuss the structure of your introductory paragraph:

Hook: this is the first sentence of your introduction and the first sentence of your essay. MAKE IT COUNT. You can ask a question or give a fact or a statement.

Thesis: this is the part of your introduction that tells readers what your entire paper is about. It doesnt just give the reader the overall topic of your essay, but the topics of each of your body paragraphs. Thesis should state the three points you will make.

Writers use all sorts of hooks. They can be anything from music lyrics to shocking facts, to jokes or funny stories. It really depends on the topic and how you would like to connect with your readers.

This week, do some research on hooks for writers. For your initial post, provide us with your hook and thesis you plan to use in your This I Believe Essay.

    W2 Question

    Class,

In my research paper, I have decided to address the following question: How did the Spartan agoghe influence ideas about obedience and collective identity among Spartan citizens?

The subject matter is of interest to me due to the fact that the Spartan education system is among the most unique systems ever used in the history of the world to form citizenship, and I am of the view that it has a lot to offer to people regarding the formation of shared values and behaviour based on well-structured training programs.

The agogee was much more than just mere military training; it was a whole system of socialization that deprived men of personality and identity in favour of corporate patriotism to the state. I will explore how certain rituals of this system, including child abduction at the age of seven, groupage, ritualized suffering, and controlled rivalry between generations, have helped to establish the mythical Spartan warrior culture. The psychological processes under which the system of obedience became internalized as opposed to imposed on the participants are of particular interest to me, and how this system continued to promote itself throughout several generations.

My initial research has already unearthed good sources, and one of them is Tridimas’ latest analysis of Sparta’s constitutions, and this will give a good background of how agogee helped in supporting the wider political stability, and this can be a tool of conflict resolution in the Spartan society. I will examine both ancient writings, such as Plutarch and Xenophon, and contemporary scholarly interpretations of the system, applying the anthropological and sociological spheres to the study, including comparisons between the system and other ancient systems of education. This narrowed-down question will enable me to evade the superficial account of the Spartan society during the research of a certain process of social control, which had far-reaching consequences for Greek history. I am interested in investigating how this distinctive education system formed one of the most unified and, at the same time, contentious civic identities in antiquity and what those lessons can tell us about state-sponsored identity formation in a more general sense.

Reply from Professor: Freddy, I think that this is fine to do. I think we want to be careful about structuring this as a ‘We should follow’ this especially given that the system is a, at best, somewhat problematic and toxic system and it’s also a system based upon the exploitation of enslaved humans who outnumber the Spartans 10 or 20:1 at times so it might be better to focus on why they created the agoge and what it represented to them rather than seeing it as something we should emulate.

    Primary Sources

Plutarch. Life of Lycurgus. In Plutarchs Lives, translated by Bernadotte Perrin. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1914.

Xenophon. Constitution of the Spartans. Translated by E. C. Marchant. London: Macmillan, 1925.

These primary sources offer primary ancient views of the organization, training, and ideological mission of the Spartan agg. Plutarch is a moralized biography related to the reforms of Lycurgus, and Xenophon is an analytical description in contemporary form of Spartan institutions. Collectively, these writings help to understand that the agg was not only a system of education but a system of state regulation and cohesion of the state. Their diverging points of view on being authors point to both the idealization and the practicality of their ideologies in the Spartan society. They are critical to read situations that bring to light tensions between discipline and individuality inherent in Spartan citizenship. Such comparative reliance on sources makes it easier to conduct historical analysis, balancing normative ideals and institutional practice as generations of Spartan citizens lived them.

    Secondary Sources

Cartledge, Paul. The Spartan Invention of Citizenship. History Today 51, no. 6 (2001): 3339.

Ducat, Jean. Spartan Education: Youth and Society in the Classical Period. Swansea: Classical Press of Wales, 2006.

Kennell, Nigel M. The Gymnasium of Virtue: Education and Culture in Ancient Sparta. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1995.

Tridimas, George. The Spartan System: Constitution, Agg, and Crypteia. Greek History 45, no. 2 (2018): 210235.

These academic secondary sources discuss the agg as a socialization, political regulation, and identity-building system. Kennell and Ducat give a background of the cultural and institutional analysis, and Cartledge and Tridimas give us citizenship, obedience, and political stability issues in Spartan society. These works combined allow examining the way the agogee contributed to collective identity due to the influence of agg and the obedience of Spartan citizens. These historians also criticize myths of Sparta by underlining the human expense of unwavering discipline and imposed conformity. Their commentaries bring out the conflicts between unity and repression, especially when it comes to the hierarchy between classes and the oppression of the helot population. This scholarship makes the agg not only a successful cohesive process, but also a contentious and morally ambiguous process of social control. This critical method enhances the analysis because it brings Spartan education into closer contact with other debates regarding power, coercion, and the identity formation process introduced by the state in the ancient world.

Reply from Professor Thanks, Freddy. This does look like a promising start. Have you looked at other fragmentary evidence on Sparta or any archaeological evidence? I think that might help expand your primary source offerings if we could do that and we can also get some monographs on Sparta, too, in addition to articles.
