  • Regulating Employment

    1. Review Exhibit 1.1 in your assigned reading, Realities about the Regulation of Employment. Do you believe these realities? Why? Have you had any experience with any of these issues? Is there a difference in connection with these realities between what the law says and how it is implemented in the workplace?

    2. Twenty-five former student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs”) who attended a masters degree program at Wolford College, LLC, were required to participate in a clinical curriculum, which, under Florida law, was a prerequisite to obtaining their masters degrees. The students had to participate in a minimum of 550 clinical cases in a variety of surgical procedures. The patients with whom these students worked paid the hospitals or clinics for these surgical services through their health insurance or out of pocket. The students received none of that money. The students sued to receive unpaid wages and overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act for their clinical hours. The Eleventh Circuit found it appropriate to “focus on the benefits to the student while still considering whether the manner in which the employer implements the internship program takes unfair advantage of or is otherwise abusive towards the students.”

Do you think the student interns were employees entitled to wages? Do you think there are scenarios where interns should not be entitled to wages? If the court does find that these students are entitled to wages, who then is liable: the university or the clinics? [Schumann v. Collier Anesthesia, P.A., 803 F.3d 1199, 1209-12 (11th Cir. 2015)]

    3. Uber Technologies, Inc. develops, markets and operates the Uber app. The app allows consumers to request an Uber driver to pick them up and drop them off at the nearest location. Uber drivers use their own personal cars and are viewed by Uber as independent contractors. Uber views the app as a conduit between the transportation providers and passengers. A passenger brought action against Uber after the Uber driver stabbed the passenger following an alteration. The passenger alleged that Uber was liable for negligent hiring, training, and supervision.

Should Uber be held liable for the actions of its driver? What must the passenger prove to win this case? [Search v. Uber Techs., Inc., 128 F. Supp. 3d 222 (D.D.C. 2015).]

    • Name: Mrs. Evelyn Thompson
    • Age: 68 years old
    • Gender: Female
    • Medical History:
    • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (diagnosed 12 years ago)
    • Hypertension (diagnosed 10 years ago)
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (diagnosed 5 years ago)
    • History of ischemic stroke (3 years ago, with mild residual right-sided weakness)

    • Fluoxetine 20 mg daily
    • Aspirin 81 mg daily
    • Primary Care Physician: Dr. Sandra Hayes
    • Current Situation:
    • Mrs. Thompson is hospitalized due to a recent exacerbation of COPD, which has led to difficulty breathing and increased use of her rescue inhaler. She also reports fatigue, weight gain over the past few months, and difficulty managing her blood sugar levels.
    • Her hospital discharge is planned for tomorrow, and she has expressed a desire to return home, but she requires follow-up care to prevent further complications and re-hospitalization.

    Clinical Information:

    • Vitals on Admission:
    • Temperature: 98.4F (normal)
    • Blood Pressure: 150/92 mmHg (elevated)
    • Heart Rate: 92 bpm (slightly elevated)
    • Respiratory Rate: 20 bpm (within normal limits)
    • Oxygen Saturation: 94% on room air (mild hypoxia)
    • Laboratory Results:
    • A1C: 8.7% (above target of <7%)
    • Serum Creatinine: 1.2 mg/dL (within normal limits)
    • Potassium: 3.8 mmol/L (normal)
    • BNP: 300 pg/mL (elevated, possibly indicating heart failure exacerbation)
    • Functional Status:
    • Mrs. Thompson uses a walker for mobility but has difficulty walking more than short distances.
    • She lives alone and has limited social support, with only a son who lives out of state.
    • She struggles with managing her medications, particularly her diabetes management and inhaler use, and she has missed several follow-up appointments due to transportation issues and depression.

    Nursing Considerations:

    • Mrs. Thompson’s COPD exacerbation is currently stable, but she remains at risk for future exacerbations due to her non-compliance with maintenance therapy and poor self-management.
    • Her diabetes is poorly controlled, contributing to her fatigue and overall decline in functional status. She is at risk for diabetic complications such as neuropathy and retinopathy.
    • Mrs. Thompsons depression may impact her ability to engage in self-care, and her social isolation is a contributing factor.
    • She has hypertension, which is not well controlled, putting her at risk for cardiovascular events such as stroke or heart failure.

    Assignment Details:

You are a case manager assigned to coordinate care for Mrs. Evelyn Thompson upon her discharge from the hospital. Your task is to conduct a comprehensive risk stratification and critically think and discuss the following:

    1. Clinical Risk Factors:
    • Analyze Mrs. Thompsons medical history and current health status. Is she at risk for acute and/or Chronic complications?
    • Are there any potential gaps in her care or medication management that you think needs addressed?
    • Risk Stratification:
    • Using the clinical data provided and the AAFP Risk stratification tool, classify Mrs. Thompson into a risk category for case management (e.g., high risk, moderate risk, low risk AND Levels 1-6) and explain why you have placed her in that risk category. IMPORTANT: Include your rating for both step 1 and step 2 and explain why you gave them that level.
    • Identify the most critical factors contributing to her overall health risks.
    • Psychosocial and Functional Assessment:
    • Evaluate Mrs. Thompsons emotional and mental health status. Does her depression and social isolation affect her ability to engage in her care plan?
    • Are there any other factors that might play a role in her successfully following the care plan?

  • Healthy people

Choose a topic that interests you – read the Overview, Objectives, Interventions and National snapshot data. How could you make an impact on this problem in your local community as a professional? Be specific – what measures could you use to improve the issues? What are the barriers that you would face?
  • Annotated Bib

the paper needs a topic that dives into public administration and some sort of criminal justice crossover. so you choose the topics If you currently work in a government or nonprofit organization, think about a problem you have encountered in that workplace, or a problem the organization faces. Do you have a particular topic that really interests you? If so, thats a great place to start! Read the news sources and websites about public administration. What problems does government face? Is there a program or policy that is allegedly failing? Doing particularly well? Overview This assignment is related to our course project (literature review paper) and will help you prepare for your final paper. In this exercise, you will submit an annotated bibliography of 6 sources that you will potentially use for your project. In Module 2, you selected your topic. In this assignment, you will access scholarly literature on your chosen topic. In other words, your sources are expected to be peer-reviewed journal articles. The paper needs to be five to seven pages and there should be a minimum of 10-15 such sources. The only acceptable alternative sources are government documents or government research reports. Depending on your topic, they may form the bulk of your sources. As always, bring me your questions about appropriate sources. Papers should not include sources such as Wikipedia, the dictionary, websites, and textbooks. For more information on the full literature review project that you are responsible for completing by the end of this course, please review this outline: Instructions for Literature Review Paper. Please note that your final literature review paper needs to be an integrated presentation of ideas and NOT an annotated bibliography. Course Learning Objective (CLO) Addressed: CLO 4 Information Instructions Unlike with your literature review paper, in this assignment, you will identify 6 sources to help with your final paper. For each source, you should provide the following: An APA citation A 1-2 paragraph description of each source. A summary of the source’s purpose; identify the key ideas and conclusions that the source is communicating.
  • Discuss 3

In your reading this week, the authors highlighted the importance of identifying various perspectives and worldviews regarding the care and management of patients across the lifespan. For example, both the medical and nursing perspectives have something unique to contribute to health care and the achievement of positive patient outcomes. That said, examine components of the medical perspective and the advanced practice nursing perspective. What are the similarities? What are the differences? How can both professions improve communication and collaboration to enhance patient outcomes? Please include research studies and/or reliable electronic sources to support your arguments.

    Discussion 3 Prompt 2

Identify two reliable and credible electronic sources (i.e., websites) for relevant evidence-based practice guidelines on a topic of your choice. For example, you may be interested in the management of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 or Generalized Anxiety Disorder, to name a few.

Once you identify two sources, compare and contrast the differences in grading methods for the guidelines and the feasibility of implementing these guidelines in clinical practice. In other words, how was the evidence appraised and evaluated? Is there evidence of a strategic approach for evaluation purposes? Please cite your references in APA format.

  • Reflection

It is important to know how to calculate the various ratios for analysis and to perform both horizontal and vertical analyses on the income statement and balance sheet. However, it is also vital to be able reflect on these analyses and to interpret what the various calculations tell us about a particular company and its financial health. This paper will give you an opportunity to analyze the ratios and the horizontal/vertical analyses in terms of the companys overall financial health.

Evaluate the companies from the “Benchmark – Topic 2 Assignment” in terms of the ratio, horizontal and vertical analyses. In 500-700 words address the following:

    • What do the ratios calculated for Marshall Inc. tell us about the companys (a) liquidity (b) profitability and (c) solvency? Evaluate the companys financial health based on each category of ratios. Refer to Problem 14.04A in CNOW.
    • Based on the changes reflected in the horizontal analysis of McDade Companys income statement discuss any changes that would be significant and what these changes might indicate for the company. Refer to Problem 14.01A in CNOW.
    • Based on the changes reflected in the vertical analysis of Tri-Comic Companys income statement discuss any changes that would be significant and what these changes might indicate for the company. Refer to Problem 14.02A in CNOW.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success.
