  • ETM: Management vs. Leadership

    Introduction to Leadership (MAL 5301)

Engaging the Material (ETM) Exercise, Week 2

Based on your readings, how would you define management? How would you define leadership?

Reflecting on the leadership behaviors outlined in Yukl’s table (p. 68):

    • Which behaviors are more commonly associated with managers and leaders?
    • Which behaviors are unique to leaders?
    • Using the table and your definitions, explain how leadership differs from management.
    • Do any of these behaviors align with your current leadership strengths?
    • Are there any behaviors that highlight areas where your leadership could improve?

Watkins discusses “the seven seismic shifts” for leaders.

    • What do these shifts mean to you as you transition from one to another? Make sure to list each shift. For example, what does transitioning from a bricklayer to an architect signify for you?

  • discussion board

In this course, the discussion board functions differently from those in your other classes. Instead of providing specific topics, I encourage you to generate discussion points based on the readings and engage with your peers. Think of the discussion board as a virtual classroom where I ask, “What are your thoughts on this week’s reading? What do you want to discuss?” Your posts should reflect your answers to these questions.

Active participation in the discussion forums is crucial for this online class. Your involvement will be graded on a scale from 0 to 10 points per reading, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over monologue.

To earn full credit, you must post at least three times: an initial post reacting to the reading, followed by two responses to your classmates’ posts. Your contributions should be relevant, substantive, and demonstrate engagement with the reading. When responding to others, aim to provoke further thought through questions or challenges rather than simply agreeing.

While there is no strict word count, posts under 250 words are unlikely to receive full credit because it is challenging to demonstrate thorough engagement with the material in such a brief post. I am looking for evidence of deep reflection on the material.

Primary Post (Due Friday by 11:59 p.m.)

Your primary post should respond to the provided questions with an analytical approach, rather than merely summarizing information or sharing personal anecdotes. Ensure your response:

    • Analyzes the topic, drawing connections to relevant personal experiences
    • Demonstrates clear, grammatically correct writing, utilizing complete sentences
    • Is submitted by the specified deadline

Two Reply Posts (Due Sunday at 11:59 p.m.)

To receive full points, reply posts should:

    • Thoughtfully engage with the content of two classmates’ primary posts
    • Focus on the analysis presented by your classmates, rather than introducing new personal experiences
    • Be well-written, adhering to standard grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules

  • Edwards assignemnt

Jonathan Edwards is probably the archetypal Puritan. He was brilliant, enrolled in Yale at age 13, wrote an essay about spiders, p. 172. His sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, is probably the most famous sermon every preached in this country. What I’d like you to read from it are the 2nd and 3rd whole paragraphs on p. 180. This is where he makes his famous analogy using the spider.

    No quiz on Jonathan Edwards.

Discussion Question: What point is Edwards making about God and people in his description?and this is the insturction; or each of the stories , I’ve listed some topics for you to write a paragraph about. You may write on a topic I’ve listed, or you may choose to write on something else. It’s up to you; it doesn’t matter to me which you do.

IMPORTANT: Your paragraph must be at least 10 lines long. It can be longer, but it must be at least 10 lines.

You must make an honest effort to give a good answer which shows some thought. If all you do is summarize the story or state generalities, you will get no credit for your paragraph. You need details.

In addition to your original posting, you need to do one response to another posting. It must be at least 5 lines long. You can’t just say “I agree” or “That’s a good idea.” You must have some substance.

I’ve put the discussion dates on the discussion page right after the discussion question. Please take the dates seriously. I will give you the response once you answer the question, and I got only 2 hours
