Science standards across the United States, including the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and other state standards modeled after the NGSS, were created based on the research included in A Framework for K-12 Science Education. The framework provides a sound, evidence-based foundation for standards by drawing on current scientific research, including research on the ways students learn science effectively, and identifies the science concepts all K12 students should know. The Next Generation Science Standards promote a three-dimensional approach to classroom instruction that is student-centered and progresses coherently from Grades K-12.
Part 1: Unpacking the Standards
Unpacking and understanding the science standards is key to educator and student success. When teachers are knowledgeable about the expectations of the standards, they are better able to lead students to strong learning outcomes.
Using NGSS or your state science standards, select a K-8 standard from each of the following domains: earth and space science, life science, physical science, engineering and technology, and health. Complete the ELM-455 Unpacking the Standards template with the following for each standard:
Part 2: Reflection
After unpacking the standards, write a 150-300 word reflection that addresses the following:
Support your work with 2-3 scholarly resources.
