Japanese Empire Week 1 Reading Response
The foundation of intellectual inquiry is based on close reading and note-taking. The ability to concisely summarize and evaluate content is a difficult skill to master, and practicing it will help improve the quality of your work in this course.
Students will upload a 1-page single-spaced reading response (450-600 words) [Word file] to our Google Classroom on that week’s readings by TUESDAY, 11:59pm.
It should include the following four items:
(i) A concise summary of the authors’ arguments.
(ii) The authors’ methodological approach and use of sources.
(iii) An explanation of the strengths and weaknesses of the readings.
(iv) 2-3 questions for class discussion.

In recent years, there have been several infectious diseases to garner public and medical
attention for various reasons (Ebola, TB, Whooping cough, Measles, Mumps, and SARS-CoV-2 or
COVID-19 to name a few). In addition, debates about mandated immunizations are growing with
some arguing that individuals should have the right to choose whether to get vaccines. While
biomedical technology and discoveries like vaccines are extremely important in the battle
against infectious diseases, why is it also important to understand infectious diseases today
from a socio-historical perspective? For example, why do we still need to examine the role of
social determinants in relation to who is at risk for infectious diseases as well as how the organisms which cause these diseases, and the hosts and vectors behave? How does looking at
the history of other infectious diseases provide insight for contemporary efforts to deal with
infectious disease?

HIT GovernanceIntroduction:
The current literature is replete with information on the value of information technology in healthcare. As the industry further seeks achievement of safe quality care, cost control, access, HIT enhancement or new projects must be aligned with organizational strategic planning and demand of external environment. HIT governance has an important role in addressing alignment between strategic IT, organizational strategic planning, and the external environments.
Tasks:
- Develop ten questions that will evaluate the alignment of IT projects with organizational strategic planning and external environment. Explain the intent of each question for evaluating HIT alignment with strategic planning and external environment.
- Interview a senior healthcare leader of a local healthcare facility and ask about his or her IT governance and his or her roles and responsibilities and effectiveness.
- Finally, ask the senior healthcare leader using the ten questions that you developed and evaluate his or her HIT alignment. Also, evaluate his or her responses if there is an alignment with HIT strategies, strategic planning, and external environment.
