Mental health screening and assessment
Instructions Select a case for your specialization (school counseling or clinical mental health counseling) from the scenarios provided below. You are meeting with the client for the first time. You ask the client to complete an assessment measure and you collect relevant information about their presenting problem and history. This assignment has two parts. In Part 1, you will record a video of yourself explaining the instructions for the assessment to your client. Part 2 is a written component that includes information about the measure, the results, and your understanding of the results. Complete the following as part of your initial session. Part 1: Video Component Record a 25 minute video of yourself using Kaltura or similar software to explain the instructions for the assessment to the client. The video should be no less than 2 minutes and no longer than 5 minutes in length. Please be sure you record yourself in a professional setting (as you would if you were providing telehealth services). In an actual first counseling session, you would spend time reviewing the informed consent document (such as limits to confidentiality, et cetera) and introducing the client to the counseling process. However, for the purpose of this assignment, simply go straight into sharing about the type of assessment or screening you’d like them to complete. An example is below: “Hi __________. Part 2: Written component For this part of the assignment, write a 34 page paper that addresses the following: Assessment results. Score the assessment the client took and present the results. Discuss the reliability and validity of this measure. This section should be 23 paragraphs and include at least one scholarly source. Historical view of assessment. Include a brief historical overview of the assessment tools used in the assignment. Discuss how these assessments have evolved over time and how different theoretical perspectives have influenced their development. How has the history of assessment informed your understanding of the results? This section should be 23 paragraphs and include at least one scholarly source. Cultural considerations. How might the cultural considerations in your case study impact the interpretation of the score? Consider addressing the cultural biases that might exist in traditional assessment tools and how these have been addressed or modified for diverse populations. What is your understanding of the client’s problem based on the information provided? Reflect on your own biases and assumptions that might impact the assessment process. This section should be 11.5 pages and include at least one scholarly source. Insert the link to your video at the top of your paper and submit the paper to the assignment area. Scenario: Kristen (Clinical Mental Health Counseling) Kristin is a 32-year-old, cis-gender, straight, African-American woman who is married and the mother of one child. She has had numerous worries for the past five years but has never sought counseling. During the last appointment with her family physician, she was referred to a counselor due to her intense feelings and decline in happiness in the past few months. For several months, Kristin has been experiencing intrusive, repetitive thoughts that centered around her child’s safety. She frequently imagines that various, serious accidents have occurred and cannot put these thoughts out of her mind. For example, on one occasion, she imagined that her son had a broken leg playing soccer at school and called the school to see if he was all right. Even after learning that he was fine, she admitted being somewhat surprised when he arrived home unharmed. Additionally, Kristin is not satisfied with her marriage and is having challenges managing her child’s behavior and all a parent should teach a child. Questions From the Therapist “Hello Kristin. It’s nice to meet you. I see that your family physician referred you to me. Would you tell me from your perspective why you’re here today?” “I’ll be honest. I’m not really sure. But while I was talking to her about Nathan and how much I worry about his health and if he’s safe, she thought I was worrying too much. Which, on the one hand, yes, I know I’m a worrier. I always have been, but since becoming a mother, it’s like it all focused on Nathan and him being safe. But on the other hand, what mother doesn’t worry about her child? All I want is to protect him and keep him safe. When I can’t be with him, like when he’s at school, then it’s harder to turn off the worries, so perhaps Dr. Rockler has a point.” “You mentioned having thoughts about Nathan’s safety. Could you describe those thoughts to me?” “I don’t know. It’s like some thought about something that could have happened to him will pop into my mind and once it’s there, I can’t let it go. I called the school in a panic, and they swore nothing had happened. He expects me to take care of everything related to Nathan, which is fine except that I was an only child and I don’t really know what’s normal for a little boy. Trey is the oldest of four boys, so he could be so much help in raising Nathan, but he just does the bare minimum. PART 1: SUPPORTING AREAS OF ABA PRACTICE
Using Figure 1.3 (“Improving People’s Quality of Life from A to Z”) in Chapter 1 of Cooper et al. (2020), select three different areas of practice where Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can be effectively used to enhance the quality of life in real-world settings. You will use , formatted like an Annotated Bibliography, to organize your information. For each area selected, locate and summarize a recent peer-reviewed journal article (not included in the course readings) that illustrates how an ABA-based intervention improved an individual’s quality of life.
Under each article summary, refer to your course readings to briefly discuss at least three specific key points that support how the intervention’s procedures and results reflect the application of fundamental ABA principles in producing behavior change.
PART 2: RESPONDENT/OPERANT CONDITIONING ANALYSIS
You will create a 6-8 slide PowerPoint presentation to guide your discussion of each of the outlined sections. Your presentation will be a narrated screen recording using Kaltura, which will be uploaded into the Unit 5 Assignment Dropbox, along with a copy of your PPT slide deck. Your PPT presentation should include a Title Slide and end with a reference slide formatted in APA.
Using the scenario of you will analyze the respondent and operant conditioning relationships in the scenario and discuss their implications using behavior-analytic terms. Then, you will establish a simple plan that considers schedules of reinforcement and the use of various possible differential reinforcement procedures to support a change in Cindys behavior.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Identify the respondent conditioning relationships in the scenario (i.e., stimulus-response pairs) using behavior-analytic vocabulary.
- Discuss the elements of time and environment that influence Cindys respondent behavior.
- Explain how the reflexive stimulus-response relationship could be reversed, providing examples of extinction or counterconditioning.
- Create a diagram that visually represents the respondent conditioning relationships in the scenario.
- Identify the operant conditioning relationships in the scenario (i.e., stimulus – response stimulus relations) using behavior analytic vocabulary.
- Discuss the process of operant learning that occurred that maintained Cindys behaviors.
- Establish a simple plan, providing examples of how different schedules of reinforcement (including the matching law) and a variety of differential reinforcement methods could be used to change Cindys behaviors. Also, discuss which methods would not be suggested and why.
- If punishment were an option, describe, with a rationale, how you might implement a punishment procedure, identifying the anticipated outcome.
