    Overview

This journal assignment allows you to explore historical context and how different populations in society are viewed as normal, whereas others are viewed as abnormal, specifically regarding race, sexuality, gender, or socioeconomic status. Using the resources from Module Four, you will reflect on how these different populations have been constructed in different historical contexts.

    3. How do LGBTQ+ narratives differ from the dominant narrative?
    4. What stories or ideas have you encountered (either in school, media, or your community) that have been used to justify why LGBTQ+ people might be treated unfairly? How do those narratives shape attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals?
    5. Personal Comparison: Explain how common explanations or assumptions that youve heard about the LGBTQ+ community compare to what you know or have experienced personally.
    6. Examples That Reshape the Dominant Narrative: Identify examples where LGBTQ+ peoples own stories or perspectives help reshape the dominant narratives. Include references and examples from this modules resources.
    7. Power Structure: Explain how dominant groups have created a power structure over marginalized groups. Include references and examples from this modules resources.

For your assigned research demonstration, please find: (1) general instructions for your demonstration; (2) online data collection procedure screenshots; and (3) the data collected. Please see the Research Demonstration Project Module on Canvas for more details on each aspect of the project. Demographics have been posted in the Project Module.

You will meet with your teammate during classes this coming week on 1/27 and 1/29 to work on presentation preparations, while I am available to help you with your statistical analyses and answer any questions. Please join class on Tuesday prepared to be productive. That means each of you should have downloaded SPSS (see my 1/22 Canvas Announcement for download instructions) and reviewed all information in the Research Demonstration Project Module (including project instructions). To get off to a running start in your first team meeting on Tuesday, begin researching your assigned topic now and take a look at the statistical analysis and graph(s) required for your presentation (short videos on how to conduct statistical procedures can be found in the Project Module (click on Statistical Analysis and Reporting).

Your completed presentation PowerPoint must be uploaded through the portal on Canvas no later than Sunday, 2/1. Presentations will begin on Tuesday, 2/3. Should you have any questions on your demonstration that cant wait until class sessions, please use ‘Reply All’ from within the most recent communication – this will enable me to quickly see a history of dialog on the demonstration that is often necessary for a response and ensure that all team members see all communications.

  • Week#4 Journal #3

    Objective

    • Analyze the public relations challenges associated with name, logo, and mascot changes in sports organizations.
    • Evaluate the impact of rebranding on consumer behavior and spending.
    • Assess the financial implications of rebranding for sport franchises and educational institutions.

    Instructions

    Identify Public Relations Issues:

    • Consider Key Challenges: Reflect on the most pressing public relations (PR) issues that professional sports franchises and colleges/universities face when changing their name, logo, and mascot. These may include fan backlash, cultural sensitivity, and maintaining brand loyalty.
    • Impact on Marketing Strategies: Analyze how these PR issues might influence the organization’s overall marketing strategies. Consider the need for new marketing campaigns, public outreach, and efforts to retain the existing fan base.

    Impact on Consumer Spending:

    • Financial Implications: Discuss the potential impact of a name, logo, and mascot change on consumer spending, particularly in relation to licensed products like hats, t-shirts, and other merchandise. Consider the financial costs and benefits associated with rebranding, such as the expense of creating new merchandise and the opportunity to attract new consumers.
    • Post-Rebranding Success: Provide examples of sports organizations or educational institutions that have undergone rebranding. Evaluate how these organizations have fared post-rebranding in terms of consumer spending, fan support, and overall brand success.

    Support with Evidence:

    • Use of Sources: Support your analysis with concrete examples and credible sources. Use at least three credible sources beyond course readings to inform your response, ensuring that they provide valuable insights into the PR and financial aspects of rebranding.
    • Personal Experience and Observations: Where applicable, incorporate your personal experience or observations to enrich your analysis and provide a unique perspective.

    Journal Entry Requirements:

    • Length and Clarity: Write a concise 3- to 4-paragraph journal entry that addresses the questions posed. Ensure your writing is clear, focused, and well-organized.
    • APA Formatting: Adhere to APA formatting guidelines for all in-text citations and references. Avoid direct quotes; instead, paraphrase and integrate information into your journal entry.

    Grading Criteria:

    • Your journal entry will be evaluated on the depth of analysis, use of credible sources, adherence to APA formatting, and the ability to connect theoretical concepts with real-world examples. Clarity and organization of your writing will also be important factors in the assessment.
