    Hematology & Cardiovascular

Lifestyle Factors as Shared Etiologic Drivers of Cardiovascular and Hematologic Disease.

Poor dietary habits, smoking, obesity, and stress have been identified as lifestyle factors that contribute significantly to the onset of both hematologic and Cardiovascular Diseases. These aspects have systemic effects that interfere with vascular integrity, distort coagulation pathways, and interfere with oxygen delivery (Raheli et al., 2024). Cardiovascular and hematologic systems are closely interrelated thus, injuries, including inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction, tend to manifest themselves in both domains (Raheli et al., 2024). APNs have the opportunity to recognize these adjustable risks at an early stage, inform patients about them based on the evidence-based strategies, and take preventive measures that can diminish morbidity and mortality in the long term.

Pathophysiologic Processes that Impact Vascular Integrity and Coagulation.

Poor diets with a high level of saturated fats and refined sugars are known to favour hyperlipidemia, which in turn causes the development of endothelial rupture and atherosclerotic plaque formation (Schmidt-Trucksss et al., 2024). Smoking increases the speed at which oxidative stress occurs and decreases the availability of nitric oxide, leading to the hindrance of the vasodilation process and platelet hyperactivity (Raheli et al., 2024). Obesity also leads to a long-lasting pro-inflammatory condition that is characterized by increased levels of cytokines like interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, which cause damage to vascular endothelium and thrombogenesis (Kajikawa & Higashi, 2022). Chronic stress stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (Raheli et al., 2024), which raises the levels of cortisol and catecholamine, which raise blood pressure, interfere with glucose metabolism, and platelet aggregation, making the heart susceptible to cardiovascular diseases.

Effects on Oxygen Tissues and Hematology.

The same lifestyle aspects also affect the delivery of oxygen by changing the production and functioning of red blood cells. The deficiency of nutrient-poor diets may cause anemia due to the deficiency of iron (Turner et al., 2023), vitamin B12, or folate that will cause a low oxygen-carrying capacity. The carbon monoxide levels are augmented by smoking and make hemoglobin less responsive to oxygen, causing compensatory polycythemia (Sotiridis et al., 2025). The further worsening of hypoxemia is caused by the presence of obesity-related hypoventilation and obstructive sleep apnea, which causes the production of red blood cells under the influence of erythropoietin (Kajikawa & Higashi, 2022). Obesity-related chronic inflammation and stress-related anemia of chronic disease is caused by interference with iron utilization and inhibition of erythropoiesis.

    Thromboembolism and Hematologic.

Endothelial injury and inflammation caused by lifestyle are predisposing factors to thromboembolic disorders. Venous thromboembolism is closely linked to smoking and obesity as a result of elevated blood viscosity, hyperactivity of platelets, and a decline in fibrinolysis (Zawadzka et al., 2025). An increase in fibrinogen during chronic stress and in metabolic syndrome also increases the formation of clots. These factors intersect with the cardiovascular pathology, hence the association between coronary artery disease, stroke, and the presence of a hematologic process such as polycythemia and hypercoagulable state (Kaddoura et al., 2025). These cumulative factors pose a great risk for the development of a life-threatening condition such as myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism.

    Evidence-Based Lifestyle Interventions

There is strong evidence that lifestyle modification is a key pillar of the prevention of cardiovascular and hematologic disorders. Food habits like the Mediterranean diet lower inflammation, enhance lipid levels, and maintain sufficient levels of micronutrients. Quitting smoking has a rapid effect of improving the endothelial performance and decreasing the risk of thrombosis (Raheli et al., 2024). Exercise improves the levels of insulin sensitivity, oxygenation, and inflammation markers. Cortisol levels and blood pressure are reduced using strategies of stress reduction, such as mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral interventions (Babak et al., 2022).

The Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse

Mindful interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based and patient-centered communication model enhancing intrinsic motivation through assisting patients to explore and overcome resistance to change, which is crucial towards adoption and sustainability of healthier lifestyles (Oikarinen et al., 2024). Literature indicates that nurse-led counseling enhanced by motivational interviewing and behavior-change strategies contributes to better patients’ engagement, achievement of set goals, and healthy behavior such as improved nutrition, regular physical activity, and smoking cessation (Oikarinen et al., 2024). Continued interaction between the APN and the patient enables follow-up reinforcement of the progress, re-evaluation of the impediments, and modernization of personalized approaches that lead to a lasting behavioral change and improved clinical outcomes.

  • Excel Fundamentals

This first assignment aims to familiarize you with essential Excel functions and tools for data manipulation, calculations, and organization. Clear communication of your findings is equally important, making business writing a key part of the process. Mastering these skills is crucial for effective data analysis and decision-making in business contexts.

You will work with a USDA weekly retail food sales data for three Western states. The data set includes variables such as state, category, dollars, and unit sales. This exercise will guide you in using Excel functions such as SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, and MIN to perform calculations and gain insights from the dataset.

    Task

You will use the USDA weekly retail food sales dataset for three Western states, found in the resources below. Once you have the data, follow the instructions below:

Part A: Data Filtering and Descriptive Statistics

    1. Filter the data, copy it to a worksheet for further analysis and calculate Total Dollars and Total Unit Sales (SUM function):
      • Using the Filter function dropdown, select Colorado in the state column and the week 2019-10-06 from the date category
      • Copy the heading row and the filtered rows into the Colorado 2019-10-06 worksheet. This is necessary as Excel functions like SUM will include hidden rows from the Filtered data.
      • Use the SUM function to find the overall total sales for the Dollars and Unit sales columns.
    2. Insert a column for $/Unit and calculate average $/Unit (AVERAGE function):
      • Insert a column to the right of ‘Unit Sales and add the heading $/Unit. Format the column using “Currency” and two decimal points.
      • Beneath the heading, enter a formula to divide the amount in the Dollars cell to the left by the amount in the Unit sales column to the left (e.g. =F9/E9) . Verify the result is correct (around $3) and then copy that formula for all remaining rows.
      • At the bottom of the column, use the AVERAGE function to calculate the mean $/unit across all categories. Enter the label Mean in the cell to the left.
    3. Find Maximum and Minimum $/Unit amounts (MAX and MIN functions):
      • In the cells beneath the Mean label, enter the labels Max and Min.
      • Apply the MAX and MIN functions to find the highest and lowest $/Unit values for the State and date filtered.
    4. Save your workbook before continuing and add your last name to the end of the file.

Be sure to name your files as follows:

    • Excel Workbook: LastName_Unit1.xlsx
    • Word Document: LastName_Unit1.docx

Part B: Data Filtering and Visualization

    1. Return to the original By State and Product Category worksheet
    2. Create a visualization for Dollars by State for a single product Category for week ending 2019-10-06
      • Use the Filter dropdown arrow in the State column and click on Select All and then OK to reveal all states, but leave the Date filter as is to show all data for all states for the selected week 2019-10-06.
      • Use the Filter dropdown arrow in the Category column to select any single product category .
      • Use the Dollars category to sort the dataset in descending order Largest to Smallest to view which state has the highest total dollar sales for that category.
      • Create a 2-D Clustered Column chart showing Dollars by State
        1. Hold the CTRL key down and select the range of State names with your mouse. Do not include the column name State in your range.
        2. While continuing to hold the CTRL key down, select the range of Dollar values
        3. Release the CTRL key and verify the desired data in the two columns is highlighted
        4. Use the Insert menu and select the Recommended Charts to create a 2-D Clustered Column chart
        5. Edit the chart title to Total Sales by State for Week Ending 2019-10-06
        6. Create a Word document that will be your written summary described in Part C below. Copy the chart and Paste Special to the Word document by right-clicking and choosing the Picture option. Then select the chart in the Word document and use the Layout Options tab that appears to the top right to choose Top and Bottom. This will keep your text paragraph additions above and below the chart.
        7. Alternatively, you can Copy and Paste the chart as a picture within the Excel workbook but the data for the chart will change in the next visualization task so you must do one of these options before continuing.
    3. Create a Visualization for Dollars by Category for an Individual State
      • Use the Filter dropdown arrow in the Category column and click on Select All and then OK to reveal all categories, but leave the Date filter as is to show all data for all states for the selected week 2019-10-06.
      • Use the Filter dropdown arrow in the State column to select any single state.
      • Use the Dollars category to sort the dataset in descending order Largest to Smallest to view which category has the highest total dollar sales for that state.
      • Create a 2-D Clustered Column chart showing Dollars by Category
        1. Select the chart and delete it by right-clicking and using the Cut option
        2. Hold the CTRL key down and select the range of Category names with your mouse. Do not include the column name Category in your range.
        3. While continuing to hold the CTRL key down, select the range of Dollar values
        4. Release the CTRL key and verify the desired data in the two columns is highlighted
        5. Use the Insert menu and select the Recommended Charts to create a 2-D Clustered Column chart
        6. Edit the chart title to Sales by Category for [state] for Week Ending 2019-10-06
        7. Go to your Word document and enter 2 or 3 blank paragraphs to make room for the new chart
        8. Copy the chart and Paste Special to your Word document by right-clicking and choosing the Picture option. Then select the chart in the Word document and use the Layout Options tab that appears to the top right to choose Top and Bottom. This will keep your text paragraph additions above and below the chart.
      • Save your workbook.

    Part C: Written Summary

In the Word document, write a brief summary (2-3 paragraphs) of your findings from the analysis. Use professional business writing to communicate your insights clearly and effectively. Your summary should be concise, well-organized, and appropriate for a business audience. Note: Copy both of your charts (Dollars by State and Dollars by Category) into this Word document. Use Paste Special > Picture format so the chart’s appearance doesnt change. Place each chart directly below your summary paragraph describing it.

    Your summary should include:

    • Insights into your charts of states and categories with the highest total sales, including their total sales figures. Put your insights directly above each chart.
    • What trends or outliers stand out in your chart? Why might some states or categories outperform others?
    • A copy of your Part A work above from the workbook and observations from your $/Unit calculations and Descriptive Statistics calculations of Average, Maximum, and Minimum. Tip: You do notneed to copy the whole table from Excel. Just include the key results in your paragraph – mention the Total Dollars, Total Units, Mean $/Unit, Max, and Min. You may summarize these in your own words rather than pasting the data.
    • An assessment of how this data could inform business decisions related to pricing, marketing, or inventory management.
    • Reflect on your experience using Excel. Identify one skill you feel confident in after this assignment (e.g., using formulas, formatting charts), and one area you’d like to improve in future assignments.

  • Complete Appendix A & B on

Week one assignment entails selecting a senior project topic that stem from a workplace issue that you are familiar with. Categorizing the most common workplace issues will depend on the type of business and overall office environment, but in general problem areas fall into four broad categories: communication, harassment and bullying, gossip, and overall morale.

The following is an outline to assist with selecting a topic process:

Begin by generating a series of possible topics that involves workplace issues. You should think realistically about the practical implications of your choice, in practically in terms of the time requirement to complete the research.

    • Do you know enough about the topic to conduct a research project?
    • Will you have access to the topic population or data sources.
    • Do your topic fall within the broad field of organization management?

Let us take a closer look at what is involved in conducting a problem analysis. Remember, you are not looking for solutions yet; but are interested in zeroing in on the problem area so that a clearer and more accurate picture may emerge.

Appendix A: Problem Analysis Worksheet is designed to assist you with the selecting of a research project that meet the above criterias. The problem analysis worksheet will assist you with recording of your thought process. You may wish to make copies of the form and complete one for each general topic being considered as a project. For example: The initial questions could be —

    • Why are other departments producing better results than this one?
    • Why are sales not higher in this department?
    • Why is absenteeism higher in this department than in any other department of the office complex?

    Roughly delineate the problem area, including;

    • What is being discussed about it and why is it a problem?
    • Where is the problem located and who is involved?

You should also accumulate your personal observations that is related to the workplace issue. Remember to identify the outward manifestations of the problem (current status) as well as possible underlying causes (desire status). Obtain these initial observations from the organization in which you propose implementing the Senior Project.

To add to these possible causes, brainstorm (with fellow adult learners and others in the organization) other possible causes. Some of these additional possible causes will suggest other symptoms that should be observed. Further observations and discussions with others in the organization will verify whether these symptoms exist. Finally, there should be a complete list of the symptoms and possible causes.

    • Consolidate the list of symptoms and causes and translate them into a set of explanations of the problem. It is important at this stage to be aware of personal biases, so do not ignore other equally possible explanations. Start to think objectively.
    • Based on all the observations, select the explanations that appear to be most relevant to the problem under study.
    • Analyze the relationships between the various explanations that may provide additional insight into the problem. Are they getting at the same thing? If so, you may be able to consolidate them into a more general statement. Does your explanation have implications for another one?

All of the above information is placed on the Appendix A: Problem Analysis Worksheet and discussed with the other adult learners and the Project Facilitator. Record each step of the analysis. You may wish to make copies of the form and complete one for each general topic being considered as a Project.

You may find it helpful to view the Problem Analysis Worksheet in terms of a “funnel” analogy. The top of the funnel represents the broad or vague area of interest. As observations are made, facts accumulated, descriptions clarified, and relationships discerned, the problem becomes progressively focused, defined, and manageable.

You are now ready to write the Appendix B: Senior Project Topic Proposal. The problem statement, which will become the topic proposal, should be a brief and clear statement. Keep in mind that this proposal needs to be written in such a way that someone who knows nothing about the area of study will understand it. Define all specialized terms clearly and concisely.

The Topic Proposal must be approved and signed by the Professor. I choose Diversity and Inclusion
