  • Understanding Quality Management

    Read the Article from the July 8, 2007 issue of Business Week entitled

    One contributor writes: “Americans have switched from Detroit Big Three vehicles to Honda and Toyota vehicles not for visual design features but for durability, reliability, good fuel consumption, and low full cost of operation. Detroit needs to offer five-passenger, 35-mile-per-gallon vehicles with 100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranties over 10 years of ownership to cause satisfied Honda and Toyota buyers to switch.

    What is implied about what drives quality in these comments? Do customers have unrealistic expectations, or are they demanding their rights? What does this demand for quality drive innovation?

In addition, the student should consider the following questions for reflection: Should firms begin their strategic planning process by setting vision and mission and then go on to analyze its environment? Or, should firms first consider their environment and then shape vision and mission around it? What are benefits and drawbacks to each approach?

    Pick an organization you are familiar with and identify which stakeholders ought to be involved in the strategic planning process. What makes these stakeholders particularly important? What unique insights do they offer? Describe which functional areas are important to the process. Which functional areas are relatively less important? Identify the most important and influential decision-makers in the strategic planning process. Evaluate the relative importance and their effect on the planning process.

    Prepare a two page (double-spaced) essay. The paper should be 12-point font, Times New Roman, be at least 550 words, and include a final source list.

    Step 1. Research

    Research online and/or Khanmigo to find a resource that will help you build your pedagogical content knowledge specific to your content area. This can be a scholarly article or a site. The resource should include suggestions for the best teaching methods and strategies for teaching your content area. This resource should be for only teachers and provide information for professional development.

    Step 2. Create

    Create a graphic organizer illustrating your new learning of pedagogical content knowledge for your content area. Include the citation of your outside source.

    Step 3. Write

    Write a 1-page detailed reflection on how you can use the ideas from the article or site to improve your teaching and build your pedagogical content knowledge. Intentionally select a topic within your content area that you would like to strengthen. Share what you have learned about this topic.

    Step 4. Submit

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, people saw major disruptions to supply lines throughout the country. Nowhere was this more evident than in the healthcare industry. Among the biggest impact was the disruption in supply lines related to personal protective equipment (PPE) and patient care needs (e.g., beds, ventilators, and medications). Use your text as a resource to complete the following assignment as well as one other resource from the library. Please cite your sources.

    • Describe the concept of supply and demand and how it relates to the provision of healthcare.
    • Once the concept of supply and demand has been explained as it relates to healthcare explain how the pandemic contributed to major shortages of needed supplies and equipment.
    • Imagine yourself as a leader of a provider group of some type (e.g., surgery center, orthopedic group, general practitioner’s office). Indicate some of the supply shortages that your group may see in a similar scenario in the future. How can these be offset or averted?
    • Identify, evaluate, and present a strategy that healthcare leaders can implement to avoid real-world supply chain disruption in the future.

    For this assessment, imagine you are a person living through an important historical event, innovation, or movement during the 19th or 20th centuryone that emerged to solve a problem or that created problems of its own. Write a letter describing that event, innovation, or movement as if you were someone who actually experienced it. For example, you could write from the perspective of someone who was part of the women’s suffrage movement in the 1910s, a member of the Underground Railroad in the 1850s, or a soldier in the Vietnam War during the Tet Offensive in 1968.

    Step 1: Describe a historical event, innovation, or movement from the perspective of someone who lived in that time.

    Describe a historical event, innovation, or movement that happened during the 19th or 20th century from the perspective of someone who lived in that time (either a real person or fictionalized).

    Step 2: Explain the personal impact of a historical event, innovation, or movement on that person.

    You can also discuss the impact of the historical event, innovation, or movement on the family and/or community of the person.

    Step 3: Explain the problem associated with a historical event, innovation, or movement and potential solutions to that problem.

    For example, if you are writing as a member of the Underground Railroad in the mid-19th century, you might discuss your thoughts on addressing the problem of slavery. Similarly, if you are writing as someone who experienced the Great Depression, you might examine the factors that caused this crisis and ways to address such economic problems.

    Step 4: Describe the potential impact of a historical event on the future, based on the perspective of someone who lived through that event.

    Reflect on how the event might impact the future. For example, if you are writing as someone experiencing the Cold War, consider how those living at the height of Cold War tensions might have viewed the future.
