  • English Question

We are focusing on the Descriptive Essay. A video is provided for you in D2L under CONTENT.

Descriptive Essays create images in the reader’s mind by using specific details. As a writer you are using words to create pictures in the reader’s mind.

With descriptive essays you can use metaphors, similes, personification to help you describe your subjects.

A metaphor is a strong comparison between two unlike things. (Says one thing is another.)

Example of Metaphor: The dancer is a swan.

Example of Simile: The dancer is like a swan. (Similes use like or as)

Example of Personification: The candle winked at the passing motorbikes. (Gives human qualities to inanimate objects.)

Objective Description is simply stating the facts about something. Ex. The man was six feet tall; the color of the building was brown.

Subjective Description gives your opinion about the topic. Ex. The man was a very handsome six feet tall, or the building was a beautiful brown color.

The dominant impression is the overall feeling or emotional response you want the reader to take away from the description.

Focus in on one dominant impression to make your writing clearer and more enjoyable.

As you have written in the past, the essay is five paragraphs, using the MLA format.
