    Assignment Overview

For this assignment, you will extend the work completed in Module 7 by incorporating all three years (2023, 2024, 2025) into a single Tableau workbook.

    You will:

    1. Modify your Excel dataset to include all three years.
    2. Update your Tableau workbook from class.
    3. Create three separate maps (one for each year).
    4. Provide a concise written interpretation of your findings.
    5. Submit your final .TWBX workbook and written response in Brightspace.

This assignment is worth 10 points.

Part 1: Modify the Excel Dataset

You must modify the Excel file used in class:

    Dartmouth_TicketSales_2023_Clean_for_Tableau.xlsx

    Step 1: Append 2024 and 2025 Data

    1. Open your cleaned 2023 Excel file.
    2. Add the 2024 data below the 2023 rows.
    3. Add the 2025 data below the 2024 rows.

    Do not create separate sheets.
All data must be in one single worksheet.

Step 2: Create a Year Column

You must include a column labeled:

    Year

    For 2023 rows, enter:

    2023

    For 2024 rows:

    2024

    For 2025 rows:

    2025

Step 3: Create the Clean_ZIP Column

Since the ZIP codes contain a suffix like (US), create a new column labeled:

    Clean_ZIP

Use the LEFT() function in a similar fashion as was shown in clas to extract the first 5 digits of the zip codes.

Clean_ZIP must be 5 digits and preserved as text.

    Step 3: ‘Clean’ the data

In a similar fashion as was shown in class, if there are any states that with ‘N/A’ values, replace those with correct values. If there are any zip codes that need to be fixed, make the adjustments.

    Save the Excel File

    Save the updated file.

Do not rename columns after importing into Tableau.

Part 2: Modify Your Tableau Workbook

You must use the Tableau workbook created during Module 7 class (Wednesday Feb. 25).

Do NOT create a new workbook.

    Step 1: Refresh the Data

    1. Open your Tableau workbook.
    2. Reimport the Exel file with the three years of data.
    3. Go to:
      Data Refresh Data Source

Tableau should now detect 2023, 2024, and 2025.

    Step 2: Create Three Maps

    You must create:

    • One map for 2023
    • One map for 2024
    • One map for 2025

    To do this:

    1. Duplicate your 2023 worksheet.
    2. Rename it 2024 Map.
    3. Change the Year filter to 2024.
    4. Repeat for 2025.

    Each map should:

    • Use Clean_ZIP as the geographic field
    • Be filtered to NH, MA, VT, and ME
    • Use either:
      • Total (raw volume) OR
      • % Total Tickets (market share)

You must choose the measure that best addresses geographic gaps.

    Save Your Workbook

    Click:

    File Save As

    Name your file:

    Homework3_Tableau_MultiYear_Analysis.twbx

This ensures your data is packaged with your workbook.

Part 3: Written Response (12 Paragraphs)

    Answer the following:

If this were your final geographic analysis for Dartmouth Health, what would you tell them?

    Your response must:

    • Reference specific patterns visible in your maps.
    • Compare across all three years.
    • Explain whether geographic concentration changed.
    • Identify potential geographic gaps.
    • Avoid unsupported assumptions.
    • Use evidence from your visualization.

Do not provide generic answers. Your explanation must refer directly to your maps.

    Submission Instructions

    Submit to Brightspace:
