Also, this “That movement from fact to meaning culminates in the line No one ever thanked him near the middle of the poem (line 5). On the one hand, it is the truth of the day. On the other hand, it opens the moral world of the poem. Emersen would interpret such a change as an indication that Hayden is aware of how to turn the mundane into something luminous. The father is chasing away the cold in the house, yet he is also chasing away a deeper cold in the family life. When he shines the shoes of the child, it is an expression of concern and not just a chore. Hayden demonstrates that beauty may reside in the kitchen at pre-dawn.” I think it’s repeating.

Writing Question
Assignment Overview
This essay should be a minimum of 600 words, written in MLA format (double-spaced, Times New Roman font, size 12). The focus will be on rhetorical analysis. You will analyze 1.3.4 Guthman, which we discussed in class. Specifically, you will first identify the “what” (i.e., what the argument is) and then address the “how” (i.e., how the article supports the identified argument). You will break down its rhetorical moves, identify its purpose and audience, and make a claim about whether or not the argument is successful. This will get you thinking about how people talk and argue about the issue of food, who makes up the audience(s) invested in this issue, and how the author makes appeals designed to reach their audience.
Skills and Goals
Summary
Rhetorical Analysis
Tasks
- Re-read the assigned essay.
- In your essay, start by providing a brief summary of the article. What is the point of the author? What is the main argument?
- After summarizing, analyze the article in the rest of the paper. In terms of your analysis, focus on the rhetorical strategies that are most interesting or obvious to you, or that you think are most important to the success of the argument. Below are some examples of concepts that you could discuss.
The authors use of emotional appeals
How the author establishes his or her credibility and/or the credibility of the texts container (i.e. the publication, website, etc.)
How the texts logic works. Is the logic dependent upon a definition or fact? Is it dependent on a cause/effect relationship? A comparison and contrast? How does the logical reasoning work? Does the author use data or statistics to support their argument?
Is this genre of writing the most effective for this particular argument/ audience/rhetorical situation? How so?
Themes that are repeated
Again, rather than trying to address everything on the list above, which would be impossible, discuss what you think the texts most important or notable rhetorical features are. Remember that the goal of this assignment is not to show whether or not you agree with the argument being made in the piece you chose. In fact, your reader shouldn’t be able to tell what your opinion is on the topic. Instead, youre being asked to make an argumentusing evidence from the textthat articulates whether the argument in the text was effective in persuading its intended audience.
Tips
- Make sure to re-read this assignment prompt throughout the writing process and especially before you turn it in.
- Your biggest charge is to answer the HOW question: HOW does this argument work?
- As evidence for your answer for, make sure to quote specific languages from the essay.
- Do not bring additional research into this essay.
Grading Criteria
Does this essay move past summary and/or opinion and into analysis? In other words, is there evidence from the text that supports the claims being made?
