1. Find a work of African art that is not contemporary art.

As a note, the entirety of A Subtlety is an installation, including not only the large-scale white sculpture youve focused on, but also the smaller, more life-sized dark brown sculptures positioned throughout the space. Including those additional sculptural components in your analysis would push your discussion further and set you up nicely for deeper conversation about context and meaning in Phase II.

This is a strong and thoughtfully developed Phase 0 submission. Your observations are specific and grounded in formal elements especially scale, symmetry, texture, and the contrast between the bright white surface and the dark industrial setting. Youre clearly paying attention to how the sculpture occupies space and how the viewer physically encounters it, which is important for an installation of this scale.

Your discussion of the contrast between the figures symmetrical, stable pose and the fragile, uneven texture of the sugar material generating tension between permanence and decay is particularly strong and gives you a clear analytical direction. Your attention to the rounded, exaggerated forms and the viewers bodily awareness also shows careful looking. Including discussion of the smaller surrounding figures could provide additional opportunities for comparison and further strengthen this part of your analysis.

As you move into Phase I, continue pushing your analysis into more precise visual explanation. For example, where do we see the strongest evidence of melting or erosion, and what specifically creates that effect? Title: Vector Vase Redesign

Objective: Learning to create paths and convert them into selections gives you precise control over

design elements. This technique is foundational in professional design work, especially for product

mockups, retouching, and logo creation.

Submission Guidelines: Submit a fully layered PSD file with all adjustments, masks, and any other layers

intact. Keep your layer names organized and readable.

All files will be compressed into a zip folder and turned in as one. If you are unsure how, please ask your

instructor.

Directions: Follow the instructions below.

1. Using the accompanying image titled vases, utilize the Pen Tool and other supporting tools to

carefully trace the outline of both the vases.

2. Once the paths are complete, convert it into selections, said selections can be converted to

masks.

3. Apply an Adjustment Layer to change the vases’ color non-destructively (you may use

Hue/Saturation, Color Fill, or another appropriate method).

4. Ensure the path is smooth and clean, avoiding jagged edges or inaccurate outlines. Refine the

masks edges if needed.

5. Save your progress with all layers visible and clearly labeled.
