Cell : Structure and Function
All living organisms we observe around us ranging from microscopic organisms, ( e.g., bacteria ) to giant organisms like elephant is made up of cells.
some are composed of a single cell and are called unicellular organisms while others, like us, composed of many cells, are called multicellular organisms.
The cell are the smallest entity that are capable of independent existence and are carrying out all essential function of life. Thus, cell forms the basic structural and functional unit of life.
The study of is called cytology.
NOTE ; Branch if biology which deals with various aspects of structure, chemistry, development, genetics and functioning of cell is called cell biology. The cell word actually come from a Latin word ( cellula or cella ) which means “a little room” or “small chamber” or “small space” . It was coined by English Polymath, Robert Hooke in1665.Robert Hooke examined thin slice of cork of oak tree ( Quercus suber ) under his microscope and he see that these cells are death thus the cells which are actually discovered by Robert Hooke was dead cell. He observed honey comb like structure or benzene like structure consisting of many little compartments. He called these compartments as “cell” given by Robert Hooke in his book Micrographia.
