Article Critique and Self-Reflection Paper as a Discussion Post
Step 1: Find an Article (5 points)
First, you are asked to find a newspaper or popular press article (e.g., Gentlemens Quarterly, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Vanity Fair, Time, Newsweek, etc) about anything we have discussed in class this semester. This will probably take you about an hour. Please post a link or attachment with your article so others can find it!
Step 2 Submission (20 points)
Second, submit a 5 paragraph essay. Here is how you should layout your essay
|
Intro paragraph
- Introduces the article being critiqued and how it relates to interpersonal communication.
- Includes a thesis statement that describes the specific purpose of your paper (to critique the article through the lens of interpersonal communication).
- Preview how the rest of the paper will be structured. Main points previewed at the end of the introduction are in the same order in which they are addressed in the body of the paper.

Body paragraph 1: Description
- The second paragraph should feature a description of the article and its main takeaway (e.g., what was the point of the article, what are you going to focus on, or what struck a chord with you).
- If the article focuses on several issues, focus in on one specific or particular interpersonal communication topic (i.e., the one you will be critiquing and applying to your own communicative behavior).
|
|
Body paragraph 2: Critique
- The third paragraph should focus on what the author did well in his/her argument and/or what he/she did not do well when it comes to interpersonal communication concepts/ theories. Specifically, explain whether the advice is consistent with current Interpersonal communication research/concepts.

Body paragraph 3: Application/Reflection
- The fourth paragraph is an opportunity to apply the corrected advice you have identified to your own life.
