Answer all questions in essay format:
- Research the local criminal justice agencies in my community, specifically in Glendale, California. This includes law enforcement (such as the Glendale Police Department), the courts, and corrections. What is the starting salary for entry-level positions in each of these agencies? What are the basic education and training requirements? After comparing them, explain my thoughts on whether the requirements match the responsibilities of each role.
- Watch a TV show or movie about the criminal justice system and write a reaction. Discuss how law enforcement, courts, or corrections are portrayed. Were they shown in a positive or negative way? Explain my opinion and why.
- Explain the three different ways crime is defined. Then apply each perspective to victimless crimes like drug use or prostitution, and explain how each view would interpret those crimes.
- Choose a country other than the United States and research its crime rates. Compare them to U.S. crime rates. Explain why it can be difficult to compare crime rates between countries.
- Find a recent crime that happened in or near Glendale or Los Angeles County. Describe what happened and focus on the victim. Do I think the victim contributed to what happened in any way? Explain my reasoning.
- Look up different crimes in California and determine whether they are felonies or misdemeanors. Then compare those same crimes with at least two other states. Are they categorized the same way? Explain why or why not.
- Research one federal law enforcement agency within the Department of Justice (like the FBI or DEA). Explain its history, structure, hiring process, and what the agency focuses on.
- Watch the movie Training Day and explain the role of undercover work in policing. Why is it important? Also explain the physical and psychological challenges undercover officers may face.
- Research a real-life case where police used force during an encounter. Describe what happened and explain whether I think the use of force was appropriate or excessive. What happened to the officer afterward? Support my opinion.
- Examine the case Miranda v. Arizona. What constitutional issue was being decided? When do officers have to read someone their rights? In my opinion, what are the pros and cons of this ruling?
