The Bauhaus

The artists, designers, and architects associated with the Bauhaus have had a profound influence on twentieth century design. Their functional aesthetic has changed the way we live, shaping everything from the skylines of modern cities to the design of the furniture and appliances in our homes.

In this assignment, you will choose a Bauhaus artist, designer, or architect, briefly discuss their life, and present one of their works. Include an image in your post. You may choose someone discussed in the book, or you may choose another artist or architect that is associated with the Bauhaus. More information can be found at the Bauhaus Archiv Museum:

The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand the influence of the Bauhaus on contemporary design.

Extra credit: For five points extra credit, please discuss a work of contemporary architecture, graphic design, furniture, or product design that seems related to the work that you discuss in your post and share an image of it with the class. Why does its design relate to the style or philosophy of the Bauhaus?

Movements and Manifestos

Artists of the early twentieth century responded to the radical changes in society brought on by technology and political upheaval by creating art that was revolutionary, and often came together to write manifestos that described their goals and concerns. In this week’s discussion you will focus on an art movement and choose a work of art by an artist associated with an early twentieth century art movement. You may choose any movement that has been covered in your reading up until this point. Some examples:

• Identify the movement and its principle members. Does the name have sinificance?
• Was the movement inspired by a previous movement or style, or shaped by the ideas of a particular artist?
• Were the goals of the movement articulated in a manifesto or magazine?
• Some artists were guided by spiritual or philosophical principles, while others expressed revolutionary politics. What did they hope to achieve?
• Finally, explain how the specific work of art you’ve chosen embodies the style of the movement.

MONUMENTS An Experience L.A. Event (I have photos and videos from event, which I will share)

ADMISSION: Admission is free and open to current USC students only, who must use the provided transportation to attend on April 10th . Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Check-in for the event will begin at 10:45 a.m. on campus. The bus will depart at 11:30 a.m. and return to campus at 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided at check-in. RSVP beginning Monday, March 2, at 10 a.m.

DESCRIPTION USC students are invited to join an afternoon of docent-led tours of the powerful exhibition, MONUMENTS. Co-organized and co-presented by The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and The Brick, MONUMENTS marks the recent wave of monument removals as a historic moment. The exhibition reflects on the histories and legacies of post-Civil War America as they continue to resonate today, bringing together a selection of decommissioned monuments, many of which are Confederate, with contemporary artworks borrowed and newly created for the occasion. Removed from their original outdoor public context, the monuments in the exhibition will be shown in their varying states of transformation, from unmarred to heavily vandalized. For this Experience L.A. event, students will visit the full exhibition at both The Brick and MOCA on the same afternoon.

MONUMENTSconsiders the ways public monuments have shaped national identity, historical memory, and current events. Following the racially motivated mass shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC (2015) and the deadly ‘Unite the Right’ rally organized by white nationalists in Charlottesville, VA (2017), alongside Bree Newsomes powerful removal of the Confederate flag at the South Carolina Statehouse (2015), the United States witnessed the decommissioning of nearly 200 monuments. These removals prompted a national debate that remains ongoing.MONUMENTS aims to historicize these discussions in our current moment and provide a space for crucial discourse and active engagements about challenging topics. .
