  • Dominant Accident Model View Analysis

    Introduction and Rationale

At this point in the course, we have seen eight accident reports: six CRM seminal accidents in Module 1; Asiana Flight #214 in Module 7; and Gulfstream IV runway overrun during rejected takeoff in Module 8. Dr. Dekker explained four different accident models in the Understanding your Accident Model reading assignment. What is the dominant accident model view of the eight accident reports?

Assignment: You are tasked with creating a PowerPoint presentation that provides a comprehensive analysis of eight accident reports through the lens of four key accident models: the Chain of Events Model, the Barriers Model, the Systems Theory Model, and the Drift Model.

The accidents include the six CRM seminal accidents in Module 1; Asiana Flight #214 in Module 7; and Gulfstream IV runway overrun during rejected takeoff in Module 8. You will assess whether each accident aligns with one of the four key accident models or if multiple models can explain the events. Your analysis should be research-based, incorporating insights from course readings and any other sources you find relevant.

    Instructions

Assignment Requirements: Your PowerPoint presentation should meet the following criteria:

    Slide 1: Introduction

    • Provide a brief introduction outlining the goal of the presentation.
    • State that the presentation will analyze eight accident reports through four accident models.
    • Include the names of the four accident models youll be discussing: Chain of Events Model, Barriers Model, Systems Theory Model, and Drift Model.

Slide 2: Overview of Accident Models

    • Define and describe each of the four accident models.
    • Provide key characteristics, differences, and similarities between them.
    • Discuss how and when each model is typically applied in accident analysis.

Slide 3: Comparison of Accident Models

    • Compare the four accident models, emphasizing their similarities and differences.
    • Highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each model in explaining accidents.
    • Discuss any overlap between models and how they may complement each other.

Slide 4: Accident Report Analysis Introduction

    • Briefly explain the purpose of the analysis: matching the accident reports to one or more models.
    • Outline the method you will use to analyze each accident report and how youll justify your model selection.

Slides 5-12: Individual Accident Report Analyses (One slide per report) For each of the eight accident reports, create a slide with the following content:

    • Accident Overview: Provide a brief description of the accident (2-3 sentences).
    • Dominant Accident Model(s): Identify the dominant model (or models) that best explain the accident.
    • Reasoning: Provide a detailed explanation of why this model(s) applies to the accident, referencing specific events from the report. Use bullet points for clarity.
    • Supporting Research: Cite research or readings that support your choice of the model(s).
    1. Note: If the accident can be explained by more than one model, be sure to explain how and why both models are relevant.

    Slide 13: Conclusion

    • Summarize the key findings from your accident report analyses.
    • Highlight any patterns or trends you noticed in applying the models.
    • Discuss how understanding these models can contribute to improving safety practices and accident prevention.

    Slide 14: References

    • Provide a list of all sources cited throughout your presentation, using proper APA format.
    • Include at least the course readings and any additional research sources you used.

    Additional Notes

    • Ensure that your analysis is research-based and not just based on personal opinions.
    • If you find relevant external sources, be sure to incorporate them to support your reasoning and strengthen your analysis.
    • Pay attention to grammar and spelling; errors may affect your grade.

If you have any questions or need clarification, feel free to reach out!

  • Drawing Femur

Figure 1: Show the broken femur.

q Draw a patient in anatomical position. Label where the femur is broken, and what region of the body it is in.

q Label 3 more areas of the body nearby and say what direction they are from the site of the injury. Many of you need more practice with body terms and directions. This should be an easy review of the first chapter.

q Describe the break using all applicable terms, such as simple, displaced, longitudinal, etc..

    Figure 2: Stages of healing

q Draw some cartoons of the bone healing over time.

q This should cover the period from the initial hematoma to the bone remodeling.

q Label features of the bone, like the periosteum or if the bone is compact or spongy, and label cell types and features of the extracellular matrix.

q You will not be judged on quality of the art, but on accuracy and showing how much you know.

Figure 3: What should the legs look like? Os coxa, femur, tibia, and fibula

q Draw the bones of the right and left leg. Draw the os coxa, femur, tibia, and fibula.

q These drawings dont have to be very high quality.

q Label the bones and bone markings that can help you determine right from left on each bone.

q You dont need to draw every marking in every text book, but draw at least 3 per bone that can be enough information to reliable tell whether its a right or a left bone.

    Figure 4: Knee issues

q If the patient is putting all their weight on the healthy leg, there might be some joint problems develop while they cant use their broken leg.

q Draw a knee joint, and label what issues could occur from an overstressed knee joint.

q This is a great place to cite sources.

    Figure 5: Physical therapy

q What kind of physical therapy exercise would be recommended here.

q Explain how to do those exercises using the technical names for motions, like extension or abduction.

q This is a great place to cite sources.

    Part 6: Prove it.

q Dont forget to say how we know this. Use at least 3 reliable sources, and give explanations for how this is known. Explanations can be summaries of experiments, case studies of patients deficient or over-abundant in the hormone, or visual observations. One source can be your textbook.

q Saying that someone said so or that you read it is not an explanation. Explanations are logical proof of independently verifiable evidence that can be verified in other experiments or by future observations of healing.

q There need to be 3 sources.

    Part 7: Cite it.

q Cite the sources. This is almost always a list of references at the end so they are easy to look up and verify afterwards. There are many different correct formats. Source citations include the sources title, author, year of publication, and where you can find it.

q There need to be 3 sources

    General APA Guidelines

Your essay should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″), with 1″ margins on all sides. You should use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font.

Include a page header (also known as the “running head”) at the top of every page. To create a page header/running head, insert page numbers flush right. Then type “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER” in the header flush left using all capital letters. The running head is a shortened version of your paper’s title and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation.

    Major Paper Sections

Your essay should include four major sections: the Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, and References.

    Title Page

The title page should contain the title of the paper, the author’s name, and the institutional affiliation. Include the page header (described above) flush left with the page number flush right at the top of the page. Please note that on the title page, your page header/running head should look like this:

Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER

Type your title in upper and lowercase letters centered in the upper half of the page. APA recommends that your title be no more than 12 words in length and that it should not contain abbreviations or words that serve no purpose. Your title may take up one or two lines. All text on the title page, and throughout your paper, should be double-spaced.

Beneath the title, type the author’s name: first name, middle initial(s), and last name. Do not use titles (Dr.) or degrees (PhD).

Beneath the author’s name, type the institutional affiliation, which should indicate the location where the author(s) conducted the research.

    Abstract

Begin a new page. Your abstract page should already include the page header (described above). On the first line of the abstract page, center the word Abstract (no bold, formatting, italics, underlining, or quotation marks).

Beginning with the next line, write a concise summary of the key points of your research. (Do not indent.) Your abstract should contain at least your research topic, research questions, participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions. You may also include possible implications of your research and future work you see connected with your findings. Your abstract should be a single paragraph, double-spaced. Your abstract should be between 150 and 250 words.

You may also want to list keywords from your paper in your abstract. To do this, indent as you would if you were starting a new paragraph, type Keywords: (italicized), and then list your keywords. Listing your keywords will help researchers find your work in databases.

Many People assume that whether they become ill or remain healthy is the luck of the draw. Consider the phrase being struck by illness. It implies that illness comes out of the blue. Today, the American Public has been educated and become more aware that behavior can influence the probability of contracting some illnesses.

    1. Agree or disagree with the following statement and use specific examples to support your answer: Good Health is basically a matter of heredity or good luck. People cannot really do much to enhance their health or pretend illness.

    2. Adele, age 24, was recently diagnosed with cancer. This form of cancer is treatable, requiring several months worth of hospital treatments. She feels a great deal of stress from being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease and managing her treatments along with her duties at work. Coping strategies define how people deal with stress. In your opinion, what are several specific steps that Adele can take to effectively manage her levels of distress throughout her course of treatment?

    3. Adeles doctor informs her of the existence of a new experimental drug on the market to treat her disease. The experimental drug has not yet been FDA approved and is undergoing clinical trials with human subjects. Her doctors inform her that she meets the eligibility requirements to enroll in the clinical trial study. Based on your knowledge from this course, what potential ethical concerns should be discussed with Adele before she agrees to sign up for the clinical trial study? Which types of behaviors would be considered unethical in this scenario? (This refers to rights of participants in any research).

Few hints that can be useful to write the paper:

    Presentation Page

Abstract and first page of content. Start with comments related to general ideas about cancer patients and treatments and research of new treatments for cancer……..

Prompt 1: Discuss what do you think about this idea…….do you agree??? Why? Why not? What does research say about this???
