  • Cultural 1

Cultural Informant Project (20% of grade)

This assignment has two parts: a brief literature review and an interview.

    1. Brief Literature Review (9 points; 10%) The literature review familiarizes you with the

chosen community. Find literature relevant to the community, addressing aspects salient to that

specific community. Possible considerations include mental health utilization rates, cultural

values, mental health stigma, treatment, or implications for working with this community.

Highlight a current body of work or theory relevant to professional practice with this community.

The paper should be at least 3-4 pages long. Resources must be recent (within the past 10

years) and from peer-reviewed journal articles or academic texts.

    2. Cultural Interview and Reflection (15 points; 10%) After the literature review, interview

someone from that community who strongly identifies with the group, acting as a “gatekeeper”

for their culture. Ask about subtle cultural aspects and their influence on potential clinical issues.

Pay attention to systemic issues of oppression/social injustice (sexism, racism, heterosexism,

classism) and contextualize the individual within their societal/social-political-economic and

cultural-historical background. Clarify the impact of these issues on how the person functions in

different cultural contexts. Finally, identify whether clinical, counseling, or communication skills

might need modification to increase effectiveness.

Submit a 2-3 page reflection paper on your general thoughts/reactions about the

interview and what you learned (e.g., feelings during the interview, self-learnings,

    implications for practice).

Do not provide a verbatim transcript or summary of the interview.

Discuss how the information from the interview contrasted with your literature review

    findings

Write a paper (1,300-1,500 words) Critically compare behaviorist psychology and Christian theologys epistemologies, methodologies, and implications for understanding human behavior.

    Assessment Description

Behaviorist psychology emphasizes observable behaviors, stimulus-response relationships, and the rejection of introspective methods in favor of empirical, measurable data and controlled experiments. In contrast, Christian theology derives knowledge from sources such as sacred texts (e.g., Bible), divine revelation, theological reasoning, and spiritual experiences. It integrates ethical principles, free will, moral agency, sin, redemption, and spiritual growth into its understanding of human behavior. Understanding these philosophical underpinnings and methodological approaches is crucial for critically analyzing how behaviorist psychology and Christian theology intersect, conflict, or complement each other in their perspectives on human behavior and mental health. In this assignment, you will critically analyze the epistemological foundations and distinctions between behaviorist psychology and Christian theology/worldview, focusing on their perspectives on human behavior.

    General Requirements

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED RUBRIC

Doctoral learners are required to use APA 7TH edition style for their writing assignments. Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for specific guidelines related to doctoral-level writing. The manual contains essential information on manuscript structure and content, clear and concise writing, and academic grammar and usage.

****This assignment requires the inclusion of at least two scholarly research sources related to this topic and at least one in-text citation from each source.

    Directions

Write a paper (1,300-1,500 words) in which you critically analyze the epistemological foundations and distinctions between behaviorist psychology and Christian theology/worldview, focusing on their perspectives on human behavior. Your response to each item below should appear as a separate section of the paper using the headings provided. In your paper, include the following:

Epistemological Foundations: A research-based analysis of how key principles such as empiricism, objectivity, determinism, and reductionism shape behaviorist methodologies (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), alternative behaviorist approaches) and their implications for understanding human behavior. How do these principles align with or contradict sources of knowledge rooted in the Christian worldview such as revelation, faith, reason, and moral teachings inform perspectives on human behavior and the integration of empirical and spiritual knowledge?

Methodological Differences: A research-supported comparison of research methodologies used in behaviorist psychology (e.g., empirical observation, experimental design) with those used in Christian theology (e.g., scriptural exegesis, theological reflection). How do these methodological differences influence research outcomes and interpretations? How do Christian ethics inform approaches to modifying behavior and potential conflicts/synergies with behaviorist perspectives?
