    Movements and Manifestos

Artists of the early twentieth century responded to the radical changes in society brought on by technology and political upheaval by creating art that was revolutionary, and often came together to write manifestos that described their goals and concerns. In this week’s discussion you will focus on an art movement and choose a work of art by an artist associated with an early twentieth century art movement. You may choose any movement that has been covered in your reading up until this point. Some examples:

    • Fauvism
    • German Expressionism (Die Brcke or Blaue Reiter)
    • Vienna Secession
    • Cubism
    • Futurism
    • Constructivism
    • Suprematism
    • Vorticism
    • Orphism
    • Rayonism
    • Purism
    • De Stijl
    • New Objectivity
    • Dada
    • Identify the movement and its principle members. Does the name have sinificance?
    • Was the movement inspired by a previous movement or style, or shaped by the ideas of a particular artist?
    • Were the goals of the movement articulated in a manifesto or magazine?
    • Some artists were guided by spiritual or philosophical principles, while others expressed revolutionary politics. What did they hope to achieve?
    • Finally, explain how the specific work of art you’ve chosen embodies the style of the movement.image.jpeg

This Signature Assignment illustrates the following Program Learning Outcome (PLO) #3: Practice the profession of nursing based on a set of core values which incorporate a humanitarian, altruistic and social justice perspective.

    Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to guide you in examining professional nursing values and behaviors. Ethics, in the practice of nursing, plays a significant role in your decision-making process used in caring for patients, their supports, and communities. Many ethical dilemmas occur in the delivery of health care. Some ethical situations are not clearly identified or recognized as such, and may go unnoticed or ignored. This paper will give you a practice opportunity to examine a case study and analyze a situation that presents as an ethical dilemma and the moral agency you, the nurse might use to address it.

    Guidelines:

Topic List: You will be randomly assigned an article to use for your paper. You will check for your assigned article in the “Tools” menu under “groups”. The number of your group corresponds with the number of the article.

NOTE: THE VIDEO REFLECTS DIFFERENT ARTICLES THAN THOSE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED. THE VIDEO INCLUDES A VERY IMPORTANT OVERVIEW OF HOW TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT, REGARDLESS OF ARTICLE ASSIGNED.

    1. Providing care over objection:
    2. Restraining patients for good?:
    3. Healthcare needs vs. resource allocation:
    4. Being honest vs. withholding information:
    5. The patient does not have an advanced directive:
    6. Ethics and the care environment:

    Assignment details:

    1. Start this analysis by reviewing the following learning material:

    2. Utilizing all these resources and those you independently research using the Baruch Library, you will identify and comprehensively discuss the ethical principles of concern involved in the assigned article. Consider the ANA Code of Ethics as a definitive guide for practice. What was/were the dilemmas faced by nurses? How does the understanding of healthcare and the culture of practice impact the dilemma(s)? How does structural racism and implicit bias impact nursing care? Using Rest’s Model of Four Components, analyze the ethical dilemma(s) and the steps needed to identify and implement moral agency (or action) to address the issue. Finally, you will reflect on the impact of ethical dilemmas on your own and your profession’s moral distress and moral resiliency. Address each of the following points in detail using the bolded words as the headings for each section of your paper:

    • Introduction and brief summary of why the concept of ethics is important to study (no heading required)
    • Define the ethical issue(s) of concern from the article, discuss what creates the ethical issue(s) and support your thoughts with independent peer reviewed research from the literature. Provide multiple examples.
    • Define and discuss two (2) ethical principles that are relatable to the clinical example(s) in the article and how they are applicable in making a decision regarding the ethical dilemma. Autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence are a few examples of ethical principles that may be considered in the decision. Describe three (3) details that support your selection for each ethical principle.
    • Define and discuss three (3) ANA Code of Ethics Provisions that support a nurses moral agency for action to speak up and address the ethical issue of concern and provide a rationale for each of your selections.
    • Define and discuss Rests Model of Four Components of moral behavior. The four components include moral sensitivity, moral judgement and reasoning, moral motivation, and moral character. Apply each component to one situation in the article that a nurse could have/should have used.
    • Define moral distress and comprehensively describe how the ethical issue(s) from the article impacts moral distress of the individual nurse and the profession of nursing with multiple details and examples.
    • Define moral resilience and discuss how moral resilience can be developed and utilized in ethical dilemmas.
    • In reflection, consider your own nursing practice, moral distress and sources for resilience.
    • Summarize the key points of the paper in the final paragraph

    • This APA formatted paper will include a title page, abstract page, body of the paper and reference page and should be no longer than 6 pages, excluding title, abstract and reference pages. All research is to be conducted using the Baruch Library exclusively. All references must include active links to the articles found in the library.
    • Make sure to format according to Chapters 2, 8, 9, and 10 in the APA Manual.

Submit to the course site as a Word Document (no PDFs) and to the assignment link and to your Nursing Program ePortfolio site as the Signature Assignment for the course.

Government and the Economy Discussion Board

Government and the Economy Discussion Board

    Context:

Government and politics lie at the intersection of society and the economy. To understand this relationship, political scientists often compare real-world economies to ideal types of purely capitalist or purely socialist systems. In reality, all economies are mixed, combining elements of both while leaning more in one direction.

At the core of this topic is a fundamental question: What is the proper role of government in the economy? Should markets be left largely alone, or should government step in to regulate, redistribute, and solve collective problems?

This assignment asks you to explore these tradeoffs and apply them to real-world issues.

Part 1: Economic Tradeoffs Capitalism vs. Socialism

Respond clearly and directly to the following:

    • From the perspective of an ordinary person, what are the main advantages and disadvantages of living in a more capitalist system?
    • What are the main advantages and disadvantages of living in a more socialist system?
    • Where do you think the balance between these two systems should be, and why?
    • What role should the government play in addressing the downsides of each system (think about collective action problems)?

Part 2: Applying Theory to Real-World Issues

Choose one of the following options and respond in a clear, focused way:

Option A: An Issue That Affects You

Choose a contemporary economic issue that directly impacts your life or your generation (for example: student debt, housing costs, wages, healthcare, or cost of living).

    • Briefly describe the issue and why it matters to you.
    • How does this issue reflect a tension between capitalism (market forces) and government intervention?
    • What role is the government currently playing?
    • Should that role be expanded, reduced, or changed? Why?

Option B: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

Read or listen to the following article. As you do, focus on the idea of the intelligence curse and what it suggests about a future in which AI may replace or reduce the need for human workers.

    • How might advances in AI change the role of human labor in the economy?
    • From a capitalist perspective, is this a positive or negative development? Why?
    • From a more government-centered (socialist or regulatory) perspective, what concerns arise?
    • Should the government step in to regulate AI or protect workers? Why or why not?

    Expectations (for both parts):

    • Use specific course concepts (capitalism, socialism, incentives, collective action problems, etc.)
    • Focus on explaining your reasoning, not just describing ideas
    • Use examples where appropriate (real-world or hypothetical)
    • Write clearly and concisely

Recommended length: 2-4 pages double spaced. I’ll be looking for direct references to as many of the assigned materials as possible.

    Tips for Success:

    – I will be looking for direct references to assigned readings (author and page # citations are adequate).
    – Critical thought and clever examples will help your score.
    – I recommend composing your content in an offline text editor and then copying and pasting in post. That way you will have an offline copy of all of your hard work!
    – You are required to reply to two of your peers in this forum; reply first to those students who have not had a lot of replies. In your replies, provide some thoughtful feedback on their ideas. Don’t forget to complete this requirement of the activity or you will lose points.

Contains unread postsBrandee said: Cultural dilemmas are important in stakeholder negotiation because they shape how participants interpret communication, authority, relationships, and acceptable solutions. Wang et al. (2024) demonstrate that conflicts in cross-cultural settings frequently arise from communication differences, value systems, and status expectations rather than purely substantive disagreements. These culturally rooted tensions influence whether parties adopt competing, accommodating, or collaborative strategies during negotiation processes. As a result, cultural awareness allows negotiators to interpret stakeholder behavior more accurately and avoid escalation rooted in misunderstanding. The authors further argue that cultural diversity can function as both a source of conflict and a catalyst for innovation when properly managed, illustrating why stakeholder negotiators must treat cultural dilemmas as strategic opportunities rather than barriers (Wang et al., 2024, pp. 23, 20).

The article also shows that culturally responsive negotiation improves outcomes because conflict types vary according to cultural assumptions about hierarchy, cooperation, and communication style. For example, indirect communication preferences in some cultures can slow decision-making or produce perceptions of avoidance when interpreted through direct-communication norms. However, recognizing these differences enables negotiators to select appropriate resolution approaches such as mediation, compromise, or collaboration. The study concludes that developing intercultural competence strengthens trust and supports more inclusive decision-making processes across stakeholders (Wang et al., 2024, pp. 12, 20).

I found this article relevant to my work in a large school district. K12 public school district negotiators like myself can apply these insights by recognizing that conflicts with unions, families, and community stakeholders often reflect cultural expectations about authority, fairness, and participation rather than only policy disagreements. Training our administrators in intercultural communication and multiple conflict-management styles can improve transparency and reduce adversarial bargaining patterns. Additionally, structured dialogue processes that acknowledge cultural perspectives may increase stakeholder trust and produce more sustainable agreements in areas such as curriculum change, discipline policy, and resource allocation. Integrating cultural intelligence into negotiation preparation, therefore, strengthens equity-focused decision-making and collaborative governance in diverse school systems (Wang et al., 2024, pp. 2021).
