    Chapter 10

    Kara’s Stress

    As you read…

Kara is an undergraduate in the human services department of a local university. This is her second semester in the human services program, and shes beginning her first internship, which is at a group home. Kara is an excellent student, and her grade point average has been 4.0. She has a keen understanding of various theories and counseling techniques, has knowledge about case management, and has excelled in her course dealing with cultural issues. Currently, in addition to her internship class, shes taking courses on crisis intervention, child development, self-awareness, and abnormal psychology. Karas career goal is to be either a social worker or a family counselor. Kara is 20 years old.

The group home where she is interning is an approved agency site for the human services department. It is a nonprofit agency that contracts with the county department of social services for funding. The agency also holds yearly fundraisers to increase its budget. Karas supervisor, Emma, is a 38-year-old pediatric counselor who has a bachelors degree in child development. Karas stated responsibilities include monitoring the children while they do homework, helping children resolve conflicts with one another, supervising children on the playground, and escorting children on field trips. Kara, Emma, and Karas fieldwork instructor all agreed on these responsibilities.

The children who live at the group home have all been placed there by the courts because they have been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused or severely neglected by their parents. Many of their parents are in jail, in mental hospitals, or are substance abusers. The parents have failed to follow through with case plans. Many of the children suffer from behavioral and emotional problems. They often act out their anger and frustration at their situation by lying, stealing, hitting, yelling, and swearing. The group home operates under a behavior-modification model. Children receive rewards when they follow the rules and suffer consequences when they break them. Each child is assigned to a personal therapist, either a licensed clinical social worker or a licensed marriage and family therapist. Some children with extremely severe problems receive treatment from psychologists, and some are on medication prescribed by a psychiatrist. Older children often participate in group counseling. They all go to school at the group home and are only allowed to leave the home when accompanied by a staff member.

    Karas Stress

Kara has always wanted to work with abused children. She was abused physically as a child and wants to help abused children feel better about themselves. When she was first accepted to intern at the group home, she felt excited and couldnt wait to start. After interning there for only three weeks, she finds herself dreading the days she works at the agency. She has begun to oversleep on those days she is supposed to go to the agency, and on weekends, shes been going to a lot of parties and getting drunk. She feels guilty about disliking the agency because she tells herself that she should want to help those poor kids. Kara believes that if she doesnt help them, they will grow up to be losers and she would be partially to blame.

When Kara is at the agency, she handles the children very competently. She usually knows the right things to say and is able to help the children manage their conflicts and aggressive feelings very effectively. In fact, she is so competent that her supervisor has left her alone at the agency while the paid staff all go to lunch. At other times, Kara is left alone because several staff members called in sick. Kara doesnt feel comfortable being there by herself and has told Emma that she feels a little nervous. Emma told Kara not to worry because Kara is more competent than half of the paid staff.

Another of Karas concerns is that she has been asked to drive some children to dental and medical appointments. She never agreed to do this when she signed her contract. Kara knows she isnt supposed to drive them in her own car because the university doesnt allow it. One day a child became violent when Kara was at the home alone. Kara phoned Emma, but Emma didnt answer her cell phone. Kara called the on-call licensed supervisor, who told her to call the police and shed be right in.

Kara is afraid to tell her class instructor about what is going on because she thinks that the instructor will be angry or that she will get in trouble for performing duties not on her contract. Kara cant handle another day at the agency. Thank goodness she gets to go to her internship class tomorrow.

Kara finally opens up to her instructor and to the rest of her classmates. She learns that other students have had similar experiences at their internship sites. The students and instructor offer some ideas to Kara about how to manage her stress.

Kara takes their advice, and over the next few weeks she slowly starts to feel better about going to the group home.

Propose practical coping strategies for Kara to manage her stress and ethical concerns effectively. Consider approaches such as setting boundaries with supervisors, seeking guidance from peers and instructors, practicing self-care techniques, and accessing counseling or support services.

  • Lily and her relationship

Lilly is a 40-year-old Caucasian female who has been married to Jacob for 15 years. They have three daughters, ages 14, 11, and 9, much to the dismay of Jacob, who had always hoped for a son. Jacob works full time at a local factory, and Lilly recently started a part-time job at the local mall when their youngest child started third grade. All of the girls participate in sports and do well in school. They live in a home that they own in a middle-class neighborhood close to school where the girls can walk to school together. The 14-year-old daughter will start high school next year.

    Current Problems

Lilly went to her physician complaining of being tired and depressed. Her doctor noticed bruises on her neck and upper arms in differing stages of healing. He asked her how these bruises happened, and Lilly said that she bumps into things a lot. Then she started crying in the office and said that her husband grabs her and chokes her sometimes. The doctor reported this to the police and referred her to the battered womens shelter hotline and walk-in center.

The police visited Lilly and asked about the bruises. She said it was no big deal and that sometimes Jacob just gets frustrated because she doesnt have the house clean and the girls can be loud. She said it was her fault and doesnt want Jacob to get into trouble. The police present the case to the district attorneys office, and they call Lilly. She refuses to press charges, so they drop the case. They refer her to a domestic violence counselor, Shari.

Lilly goes to an appointment with Shari, who is able to identify the marital pattern for the past 15 years. Evidently, Lilly and Jacob go through periods where everything is great and they are very much in love. However, Lilly did tell her that Jacob has a bad temper and gets stressed out all the time. He gets so mad he has punched holes in the wall. Luckily, he never takes it out on the girls, but he does choke Lilly and squeeze Lilly, and has kicked Lilly. Lilly has never thought of leaving him because she believes the girls need a father.

Explore the barriers that prevent Lilly from seeking help and leaving the abusive relationship, including fear of retaliation, concerns about her children, and societal pressures to maintain family unity. Discuss the role of victim-blaming attitudes and internalized guilt in perpetuating these barriers.

  • Gilgamesh Through The Odyssey

For this assignment, you will evaluate characters from Gilgamesh, The Ramayana, and The Odyssey and then write an essay with a minimum of 1000 words (see specific topic below), arguing for and supporting your conclusions. This assignment will build your writing, analytical, and evaluative skills.

Both MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited page are required for this assignment.

    Topic

The place you currently work (or volunteer) is hiring. Its a great fit for you; your skills and knowledge are developing, you like the people, and the salary is solid. One day, your boss tells you that the organization is expanding and that there is a bonus of five thousand dollars for any employee who personally recommends someone who applies, interviews, is hired, and stays at least a year. You understand that the right recommendation would work out wonderfully, but you are concerned about maintaining your strong professional reputation and good name.

In this essay, clearly identify four characters you would consider recommending and explain why each one was selected. The four candidates will be chosen from characters found in the first three epics we have read: Gilgamesh, The Ramayana, and The Odyssey. Choose at least one character from each epic. Any character in these epics may be chosen, not just the main characters. Consider each character’s strengths and weaknesses as individuals and as members of a team. Finally, in the conclusion, indicate which character you believe to be the strongest candidate and who you would recommend. Note: Support your arguments with evidence from the texts (including quotations).

    Task

Write an essay of seven to nine paragraphs presenting your argument. Include quotations from the texts as well as additional details that illustrate and enhance the points you are making. Use the following as an outline of what to include:

    1. Your first paragraph should be an engaging introduction. Set up your project and state the qualities you are looking for.
    2. Structure your essay as you choose, but the writing should be organized. Perhaps focus on one character at a time, or focus on one desirable virtue or trait at a time.
    3. Give specific examples and quotes from the texts to support your analyses. Use in-text citations in MLA format for the quotations, and be sure to include page numbers from the texts included in this course.
    4. The last paragraph should be a conclusion. Indicate which candidate you believe to be the current frontrunner.
    5. Your final page should be your Works Cited page, in MLA format. It should include the three literary texts (our epics), as well as any content pages from the course material to which you may have referred. If you use any secondary sources, be sure to cite them as well!

  • Administration agencies and international transactions

Purpose: This project focuses on administration agencies and international transactions. Administrative agencies adopt and enforce rules and standards for businesses to follow. International business transactions deal with the sale of goods cross-border. Support your response with appropriate cases, laws and other relevant examples by using at least one scholarly source from the Free Legal Research Sites page in addition to your textbook for the scenario. Your paper should be between 2 and 3 pages long, excluding the title page and references page. Medco imported a shipment of surgical instruments used in hip replacements into the United States from China. The instruments contained a mark similar to one used by Medtronic for their surgical instruments. Medtronic has a registered trademark and patent for their devices and filed it with U.S. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized the instruments pursuant to the Tariff Act, which authorizes seizure of any merchandise bearing a counterfeit mark. Medco argued that the mark was not similar and their seller in China had a patent in China. However, the Chinese patent was not registered in the United States. Decide the outcome for the case by providing support from scholarly sources such as the textbook, journal articles, cases, and information from the U.S. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website. Does the Lanham Act apply to international trade? Locate and explain the ruling of a recent Supreme Court case that addresses whether or not the Lanham Act can be applied to international trade. Discuss the elements of trademark infringement and whether trademark infringement exists in this scenario. What are the dangers of importing counterfeit goods – those goods that violate another party’s patent?
  • Harm Reduction Interview and Program Analysis

    Instructions

    4. Critically review the program you learned about by comparing it to the findings in the research In particular, you are asking: does this community program appear to be offering practices that are supported by research? Do you think this program is offering best practices to its clientele? What is it doing well and/or what could it do better?
