  • Discussion post 3

Option 1: Today we discussed the antecedents (i.e., triggers, causes) to our emotions and how, even when our emotions feel like they come out of the blue, there is always a cause. Does this resonate with you? What do you think leads to people feeling like their emotions came out of nowhere? Do you think using the emotional arc form would help to identify the cause? Any other techniques that would be useful in increasing this awareness?

Option 2: We also discussed the consequences to our emotional behaviours, looking at short- and long-term consequences. We often form habits based on short-term benefits. Can you think of examples from your life (or people you know) who have established habits based off of this principle?

Please write a critique using the article attached. The critique must be a minimum of 250 words. Below, I have attached some instructions if you are not familiar with how to write a critique. Good luck! Writing a Critique: (Use the attached article) A critique is a readers personal reaction (positive or negative) or an evaluation of what an author has to say. The writer of a critique has a responsibility to explain how they reached their critical conclusions about the article. Thus, statements such as This article is fascinating do not communicate much to the reader of a critique without an explanation of what is fascinating and why. A critique should differ substantially from a summary. Writing the Critique 1. Introduce the subject of the critique and identify the author(s). Give some preliminary information indicating the main point to be discussed. Review any background facts or issues that must be understood before the point of the article being critiqued can be appreciated. Possibly include additional biographical data. Is this one of a series of essays on this theme? This portion should be brief. 2. Briefly summarize the argument of the author. Be as objective as possible so that the reader understands what the article said. 3. Analyze the authors presentation based upon points presented and whether or not the author succeeded. 4. Respond to the presentation or focus upon the assumptions the author makes. State your reaction to, opinion of, and evaluation of these assumptions or assertions. Clearly support any reactions so that they do not appear to be arbitrary judgments. This may be accomplished by adding support from authority, using logic, observation, or personal experience. What emerges from the analysis? 5. Finally, state your conclusions about the overall piece reviewing the strengths/weaknesses.

    Scenario

The administrator of the hospital where you work voices concerns about the increased incidence of CAUTIs (Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections) over the past quarter. The director of nursing (DON) states that the hospital has a policy that was developed to reduce the incidence of CAUTIs and asks you to provide suggestions for a quality improvement initiative that will enforce compliance with the current policy. As the Director of Education, you are aware that UTIs are the most common type of healthcare-associated infection, according to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). You advise the committee that national statistics report approximately 75% are associated with a urinary catheter and that these infections can be reduced with education (CDC, 2020).

You have been asked by the committee to create Quality Improvement guidelines for staff education that focus on the prevention of Catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs) and other types of healthcare-associated infections. During the next quarterly meeting, you will present an education plan for an in-service to all healthcare personnel who care for patients with catheters and an in-service for hospital leadership. Utilizing the evidence-based guidelines, develop an in-service that presents procedures for urinary catheter insertion, maintenance, and removal.

In addition to an education plan and agenda for the in-service, create an evaluation tool or use an existing evaluation tool that will measure plan effectiveness, and recommend a current or emerging technology that will support safe and effective implementation of the changes.

    Instructions
    Part I: Staff In-Service

Using the , create an education plan for an in-service for facility nursing staff that includes procedures for insertions, maintenance, and removal of urinary catheters to avoid CAUTIs.

Create an agenda for staff that includes quality improvement guidelines for staff education that focus on the prevention of CAUTIs. Include:

    • Time for an introduction
    • Time for review of the new policies related to prevention of CAUTIs
    • Hands-on time to learn and demonstrate the procedures for insertions, maintenance, and removal of urinary catheters to avoid CAUTIs
    • Create an introduction including the following:
    • Describe why a policy change is necessary based on current evidence to improve outcomes, using the QI data above to support the change.
    • Describe why epidemiology is so essential (Refer to the comparative data from the Center for Disease Control on CAUTI infections. Use this data as supportive data to provide evidence of the epidemiologic and global need to implement the initiative in your institution. Describe how these statistics are collected and how you will use your electronic health record to report and analyze data for your institution to meet national epidemiological goals of decreasing CAUTI infections.)
    • Describe how this intervention will impact global initiatives for improvement of CAUTI infections
    • Describe how health disparities influence this as a local issue in your facility.
    • Create an evaluation tool or identify an existing evaluation tool that will measure the effectiveness of the plan.
    Part II: Leadership In-Service

Create an in-service for leadership leading up to the staff in-service, including the following:

    • Describe the importance of leadership for compliance with the initiative.
    • Discuss how the initiative will improve the healthcare environment.
    • Describe strategies leadership can use to maintain compliance with the initiative.
    • Describe one current or emerging technology that will support safe and effective implementation of the changes. Examples may include electronic alerts within the EMR, electronic bladder stimulation devices, biofilms, etc.
    Part III: Course Reflection

Submit a 2-3 page course reflection paper. Reflect on the six course competencies:

    • Explain how each course competency was achieved.
    • Use detailed and specific examples of learning, growth, and the application of competencies in clinical practice.
    • Illustrate advanced critical thinking, insight, and self-awareness throughout reflection.
    • Use professional word choice and correct spelling, grammar, and APA style.

    Scenario

As the new quality improvement manager, you are introducing Emerging Health Information Technology into the workplace to promote an integrated delivery network that will improve the quality of patient care, maximize financial performance, and increase operational efficiency. You have been approved to incorporate a new emerging health informatics technology that will support safe practice environments to improve health outcomes. You were asked by executive leadership to present this new health informatics technology to the interprofessional managers at an upcoming facility leadership retreat. During the retreat, you will present multiple times throughout the day to small groups. To facilitate this type of presentation method, you chose a poster presentation as the method of dissemination. You will create a poster presentation that you will present to your staff, which will introduce the new technology and describe how health informatics supports safe practice environments to improve health outcomes for your patients based on published evidence-based literature. You will include supporting existing research studies on emerging health informatics technology in your presentation.

    Instructions

Create a tabletop poster size 36X48. The content on the poster should be organized to include:

    • A summary of relevant evidence from credible resources that describes how current and emerging health informatics technology is effectively integrated into the workplace.
    • Identification of one current or emerging health informatics technology that can be used to enhance patient/staff safety and improve health outcomes.
    • Introduce the product you have chosen
    • Justify its relevance to improving patient/staff safety and outcomes in three different and specific care settings, providing evidence from scholarly literature or case studies
    • Outline a proposed plan for integrating the technology, including stakeholder engagement, training, and evaluation metrics
    • Address barriers to adoption and strategies to overcome them.
